New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing swift backlash after declining to condemn a local coffee chain that told a Jewish congressman with pro-Israel views that he was not welcome.

Mamdani has remained silent after the Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based Poetica coffee shop posted — and later deleted — a message on social media telling Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., not to return after he stopped by the shop with his daughter Monday. The mayor declined to comment through a spokesman when contacted by The New York Times on Monday.

“Shameful,” Fox News Radio analyst Josh Kraushaar wrote on social media in response to a section of The Times story detailing that Mamdani declined to comment.

“Well folks, we’ve reached the stage of antisemitism where Jews are being publicly barred from businesses,” the CEO and co-founder of the antisemitism-focused nonprofit Boundless Israel said on X. “A coffee shop in Mamdani’s New York City told Jewish Congressman Dan Goldman he wasn’t welcome in their store.”

“The café is implementing Mamdani’s wishes,” journalist Melissa Braunstein said.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment but did not immediately hear back.

In a since-deleted social media post, Poetica Coffee said it would have declined to serve Goldman had staff recognized him in the store. Goldman has notably declined to characterize Israel’s war in Gaza as a genocide and has received financial contributions from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, drawing criticism from some on the progressive left.

“Hey Congressman Dan Goldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?” the post said.

“See, here at Poetica, we don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between,” the post continued. “Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away. We issued you a refund—we don’t need your money (it’s probably coming from AIPAC anyways). Enjoy your loss on Tuesday. Don’t ever come to Poetica.”

The coffee chain has since deleted its Instagram page amid social media backlash.

Mamdani’s silence comes as he is working to unseat Goldman, despite the incumbent lawmaker being a leading Trump critic and embracing an array of leftist legislative proposals. Goldman notably did not endorse Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, citing concerns about how his administration would approach Jewish New Yorkers.

The mayor publicly backed former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander to represent Goldman’s district, which spans Lower Manhattan and deep-blue, wealthy pockets of Brooklyn.

Democratic voters will decide whether to hand Goldman a third House term during the Empire State’s primary elections on Tuesday.

Since both men largely hold the same policy stances, the bruising primary battle has revolved around support for Israel — with Lander vowing to elevate the Palestinian cause if elected to the House.

Goldman has notably supported military aid to Israel following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attacks and distanced himself from inflammatory rhetoric used by some on the left to criticize Israel.

Goldman offered a tempered response after the coffee chain effectively banned him from their storefronts.

“I’m sorry to see this post,” he said. “The barista could not have been nicer to my 7-year-old daughter and me—allowing her to use the bathroom even though we had not purchased anything. I made sure to buy a coffee in return for her kindness. I hope you at least make sure she gets the tip that she deserved.”

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said Tuesday her office has opened an investigation into the matter.

“Federal law prohibits public accommodations such as coffee shops from discriminating against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin,” Dhillon wrote. “These actions are not only reprehensible, they’re potentially illegal.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a fresh round of sanctions on the Cuban regime on Tuesday.

Rubio designated five entities generating revenue for the current Cuban regime, including three associated with the previously designated Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), and one member of the extended Castro family.

“Today, I am designating five Cuban entities generating revenue for the Cuban regime, including three associated with the previously designated Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), and one member of the extended Castro family pursuant to President Trump’s Executive Order (E.O.) 14404 of May 1, 2026, “Imposing Sanctions on Those Responsible for Repression in Cuba and for Threats to United States National Security and Foreign Policy,” Rubio said in a statement.

“GAESA continues to operate as the financial muscle behind the Cuban regime’s repressive security apparatus.Two of the entities designated today are GAESA-linked financial institutions associated with moving money on the regime’s behalf, and one is a GAESA-linked logistics company that executes the regime’s bidding across the island,”Rubio continued.

“I am also designating two additional entities generating revenue for Cuba through the exploitation of the island’s mineral and metal reserves, including Cuba’s state-owned GeoMinera.Finally, I am designating the wife of Alejandro Castro Espín, who himself was previously designated pursuant to E.O. 14404.These entities and actors fund,facilitate,or benefit from the regime’s malign activities,both in Cuba and across our hemisphere,” Rubio’s statement concluded.

GAESA, a military-controlled conglomerate, has repeatedly redirected aid meant for the Cuban people to the Cuban regime, Rubio has previously charged.

Rubio’s Tuesday announcement expands upon what was already the most significant package of U.S. sanctions on Cuban entities in decades. In early June, the Trump Administration levied broad secondary sanctions against businesses and banks that do business with GAESA and other Castro regime-linked entities.

The move came under a framework established by an executive order President Donald Trump signed in May.

Rubio, in a Tuesday post on X, detailed what he described as a “devolving situation” in Cuba.

“The situation in Cuba is devolving as the island’s corrupt, brutal and anti-American Communist regime continues to prioritize its own total control over the freedom, opportunity and basic wellbeing of the Cuban people,” he wrote.

“The Cuban military-controlled conglomerate GAESA has persistently served as the main vector for regime elites to steal the island’s few resources, diverting them for repression, anti-American subversion and spying instead of schools, power plants, and basic necessities for the Cuban people. Today, I designated additional GAESA network entities associated with moving both its money and its physical assets, as well as entities responsible for exploiting Cuba’s mineral and metal reserves for ill-gotten profit,” Rubio continued.

“Anyone providing services to these sanctioned actors is at risk of being sanctioned themselves. Foreign banks and other companies that provide services to these entities should freeze those activities immediately,” he concluded.

Trump administration can expand fast-track deportation process, US appeals court rules

June 23 (Reuters) – A federal appeals court on ​Tuesday cleared the ‌way for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration ​to expand ​a fast-track deportation process ⁠that would allow ​for the expedited ​removal of migrants who are living far away ​from the ​border.

A 2-1 panel of the ‌U.S. ⁠Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ​overturned ​a ⁠decision by a lower-court judge ​who in ​August ⁠2025 blocked the administration’s move to ⁠expand ​who qualifies ​for expedited removal.

India eyes “high risk” Mount Everest mission to recover frozen body of climber “Green Boots” after 30 years

Indian authorities are hoping to launch an operation to recover the frozen body of a climber who died on Mount Everest nearly 30 years ago in one of the deadliest disasters ever seen on the world’s highest peak.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is soliciting bids from high altitude recovery agencies for a mission to retrieve the remains of a climber long known only as “Green Boots” from the mountain’s northern slope.

A tender document says the contracted team must bring the body to Delhi by October.

It would be one of the most technically demanding recovery operations ever attempted on Everest — “double the danger of normal climbing,” according to Tshiring Jangbu Sherpa, the founder of Nepal-based Everest Sherpa Expedition.

“For the whole rescue team this is high risk,” Sherpa told CBS News.

Tshiring has reached Everest’s summit multiple times, and he led expeditions in 2024 to recover five bodies from various mountains in the region. He told CBS News it could take a highly trained, 10-person team up to a week to recover Green Boots’ body.

He added that, in his opinion, it would be impossible to even attempt the operation until the spring due to the weather conditions, which raises questions about the Indian authority’s June-October timeframe noted in the tender document.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police did not reply to CBS News’ request for comment on the plans.

Who is Green Boots?

The body of Green Boots — a nickname derived from the deceased climber’s bright green footwear — has been one of Everest’s most recognizable features for decades. Located at an altitude of about 27,000 feet, Tshiring said the remains have become a grim waypoint for climbers ascending from the Tibetan side of the iconic mountain.

“When they communicate with the basecamp and other climbers, they say, ‘Okay, we are now very close to the Green Boots,’” he told CBS News.

The area is within Everest’s “death zone,” above 26,200 feet, where oxygen levels are too low to sustain human life for long, making even basic tasks hazardous.

Green Boots was long widely believed to be 28-year-old Tsewang Paljor, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police member who was among a group that attempted to summit Everest on May 10, 1996, when they were hit by a sudden storm near the peak that was chronicled in Jon Krakauer’s book “Into Thin Air.”

Three climbers from the group continued the ascent despite the worsening conditions, and none returned. Green Boots is the only one of the three whose remains have been found.

The tender documents showed, however, the body in question being identified as Indian soldier Dorje Morup, who was one of Paljor’s fellow climbers. The Guardian newspaper of Britain and the French news agency AFP said they had seen documents showing DNA testing confirmed the remains were Morup’s.

“We must bring them down”

One of the best-known cases of remains being recovered from Everest involves Francys Arsentiev, a mountaineer who died during her descent in 1998 after becoming the first American woman to summit the mountain without supplemental oxygen.

Her body remained on the mountain for years, visible to climbers along a main route. She became known as Everest’s “Sleeping Beauty.”

In 2007, a team led by Sherpas and other climbers managed to move her remains out of sight, effectively giving her a burial on the mountain rather than attempting a full recovery.

More than 200 bodies are believed to remain on Mount Everest, many left where the climbers died because recovery is considered too dangerous or expensive.

The issue continues to fuel debate within the global mountaineering community, with some arguing that the dead should be respected and retrieved, while others say the operations required to do so are not worth the risk to living climbers. Some climbers say in advance that they would prefer to be left on the mountain if they die on the slopes.

But Tshiring is adamant that recovery missions are necessary because they bring the deceased back to their loved ones.

“My opinion is we must bring them down,” he told CBS News.

Sen. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona who was a key ally of disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell, used campaign cash to fund luxury trips with his family and to cover his childcare expenses, according to campaign finance filings and a source familiar with his finances.

Gallego, through his leadership PAC, has paid for trips to the Caribbean island getaway of Saint Barthélemy, Disneyland, Disney World, Miami and Chicago, finance filings show. A source familiar with Gallego’s spending told Politico that the lawmaker would often bring his family along for the luxury jaunts, and use donor cash to pay for babysitting services.

“He just spends his campaign account like it’s his personal slush fund,” the source said. “He’s using campaign cash to live a luxury lifestyle.”

Campaign finance records show that Gallego’s leadership PAC and his campaign have collectively paid over $18,000 to cover childcare costs, including a $400 payment to his wife’s mother.

“This is not breaking news,” he told Politco of expenses for childcare and family travel. “With the rising costs of childcare and the burden it has on the budgets of American families, Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House alike regularly travel with their wives and children, as is permitted by the FEC.”

In one campaign expense, Gallego and Swalwell established a joint fundraising committee that they then used to pay for tickets to watch Super Bowl LVII in 2023. The event, which cost over $37,000, was billed as a fundraising operation where they recruited donors to attend the game and have brunch with them in exchange for a sufficiently high campaign contribution.

The duo of lawmakers each profited just under $8,000 from the event, effectively shuttering the joint committee after the game.

A Gallego spokesperson told Politico that the “tickets were purchased at fair market value” and that “hosting donors and supporters at sporting events in their areas is a common, bipartisan practice.”

The source familiar with Gallego’s finances told Politico that the trip to Saint Barthélemy was for his wife’s boss’ birthday and that the trip to Miami, where he racked up $9,000 in charges at a beachfront hotel, was to commemorate his wife’s birthday.

A Gallego spokesperson explained to Politico that the travel to Saint Barthélemy was part of “a multi-stop political and fundraising swing — as senators regularly do,” and that on the Miami trip the senator and his wife “attended several widely attended political events and fundraisers.”

Federal lawmakers are barred from using funds donated to their primary campaign committees for “personal use,” or expenses that are not related to their campaigns for office. Leadership PACs, however, are held to a looser standard wherein expenditures are allowed so long as they serve some kind of fundraising purpose.

There is nothing that suggests any of Gallego’s leadership PAC expenditures were made unlawfully.

Gallego is far from the only legislator to use his leadership PAC in this way, with many lawmakers using their committees to fund pricey trips to exclusive locations.

Transparency advocates have argued that the permissive spending rules surrounding how politicians can use funds donated by leadership PACs allow corporate interests to more easily accrue influence with lawmakers by contributing to what is effectively an account for their luxury expenses. About half of the donations to Gallego’s leadership PAC have come from corporate sources, according to campaign finance records.

Gallego is reportedly exploring a 2028 presidential run, with many seeing him as a progressive with significant crossover appeal following his 2024 Arizona Senate victory. Some in the senator’s inner circle, however, have doubts that he could make it through vetting, according to the source who spoke with Politico.

His longtime friendship with Swalwell, who suspended his campaign for California governor and resigned from Congress following multiple allegations of sexual assault, is seen as one potential vulnerability. Additionally, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., has pressed the Senate to investigate Gallego over alleged sexual misconduct and campaign finance infractions.

The senator has dismissed the allegations. IRS records show that he established a legal defense fund last month.

“Any person close to Gallego would know that he is one of the most vetted candidates after his tough 2024 campaign where millions of dollars were spent against him,” Jacques Petit, Gallego’s communications director, told Politico. “Despite that, he overperformed the top of the ticket. Now he is focused on delivering for Arizonans and electing Democrats in 2026.”

Gallego did not respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital on Monday.

10 years after “Brexit” vote, majority of Britons say leaving European Union was a mistake

London— A decade after the public referendum vote that led to the United Kingdom’s “Brexit” from the European Union, a majority of Britons now say leaving the bloc was a mistake, according to a recent survey by the independent YouGov polling organization.

“Brexit has been an absolute disaster for the country,” one pro-EU campaigner told France 24 on Monday, the eve of the referendum anniversary. “Not just economically, but loss of freedom of movement, families being split up.”

Brexit has split Britain “down the middle, and nothing good has come of that since,” said another.

The U.K. has been mired in political turmoil since the vote, with seven prime ministers in the last 10 years struggling to deal with the fallout — and the economic impact in particular, which has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and then the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Leaving the EU has reduced British productivity, imports and exports, according to the Office for Budgetary Responsibility, while an analysis of government data shows the economy took a 6% hit as a result of Brexit.

“The consequences 10 years on are worse than we feared,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who campaigned to remain in the EU ahead of the referendum, said recently.

“We’ve got to go forwards”

While some who voted to leave the EU now admit to feeling some “Bregret,” two-thirds of those who voted for Brexit still stand by their original vote. Overall, 30% of the Britons polled by YouGov said they still believe the U.K. was right to leave.

Many who still support the exit from the European bloc argue that it was handled poorly by the successive governments and politicians that oversaw the transition, and the move itself shouldn’t be blamed.

Asked by CBS News’ partner network BBC on Tuesday if he regretted Brexit, one of the architects of the split, far-right populist and Trump ally Nigel Farage, who leads the Reform UK party, said that it was “absolutely the right thing to do.”

“The earthquake that happened 10 years ago today was not accepted by the establishment,” he said. “And when finally they were pushed into actually getting us to leave the European Union, they then did not implement the wishes of the people.”

A key promise of the “Vote Leave” campaign was that leaving the EU would enable Britain to “take back control” of its borders and curb migration from the EU.

But amid labor shortages after Brexit, then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was a prominent supporter of leaving the EU, eased restrictions, and non-EU migration to the U.K. spiked.

Simon Boyd, a steel manufacturer in Dorset who helped campaign for Brexit, told the BBC he was “quite disappointed” with how things have turned out, but he added: “We’ve got to go forwards, embrace Brexit, embrace the opportunities that are there.”

Rejoining the EU, he said, would “be akin to getting back on the Titanic on the conditions that you hand over your life vest first.”

Another referendum?

For many Brits like Boyd, the idea of going through the national psychodrama of another referendum is too much to even consider.

Statistics do point to a major shift in public opinion, however.

In 2016, the Leave campaign won with 51.9% of the vote: About 17.4 million people voted to leave, while 16.1 million voted to remain.

Six million people in the U.K. have died since the vote, according to pollster Peter Kellner, and data show that “turnout among older voters was higher than average” in the referendum. Two thirds of participants in 2016 over the age of 65 backed Brexit, while a generation of young people, who tend to skew more pro-EU, are now old enough to vote.

The pro-Brexit majority “has literally died out,” Kellner said in December.

Three fifths of Gen Z Brits say they’d like a new referendum on EU membership, according to polling by the More in Common think tank, while over half of respondents overall told YouGov this month that they would like to see the U.K. rejoin the EU in some way, shape or form.

But with Farage’s fiercely anti-EU Reform UK party (previously called The Brexit Party) seeing major success in recent local elections, and Brexit still a divisive issue for the country, few politicians have indicated any will to even table the idea of holding another referendum.

The presumptive next prime minister of the country, Andy Burnham, said last year that he hoped Britain would rejoin the EU in his lifetime, but he said in May: “I also believe the last thing we should do right now is re-run those arguments.”

US Supreme Court won’t let Rastafarian man shaved bald in prison sue guards

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court refused on Tuesday to let a Rastafarian man sue ​state prison officials in Louisiana after guards held him down and shaved him bald in violation of his religious beliefs in a case brought under ‌a federal law protecting incarcerated people from religious discrimination.

The court in a 6-3 ruling powered by its conservative justices upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss Damon Landor’s lawsuit because it found the statute at issue did not permit him to sue the individual prison officials and guards for monetary damages. Landor’s religion requires him to let his hair grow.

The court’s three liberal justices dissented from ​the ruling, which was authored by conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch.

The law, called the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000, or RLUIPA, prohibits ​religious discrimination by state and local governments in land-use regulations and also protects the religious rights of people confined to institutions ⁠such as prisons and jails.

The court ruled that because the law at issue implicates the power of Congress under the Constitution’s so-called Spending Clause, the measure may impose ​conditions only on the state or government entity that is the actual recipient of federal funds, not individual employees who do not themselves receive the funds – unless they consent.

Since ​the prison officials never agreed that they would be subject to lawsuits under RLUIPA, “Mr. Landor’s case cannot proceed against them any more than a breach of contract action might proceed against a defendant who never formed a contract,” Gorsuch wrote.

Liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing in dissent, noted that RLUIPA is a law, not a contract.

“Today’s decision magically transforms a federal statute into an invitation ​to be accepted or declined, deemed binding only if each particular defendant has explicitly agreed to be penalized,” wrote Jackson, joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

President Donald ​Trump’s administration backed Landor, urging the Supreme Court to revive the case.

The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, had expanded the rights of religious people and institutions in a ‌series of ⁠rulings in recent years. It heard arguments in the case in November.

Landor grew his hair over a span of 20 years into long locks that reached his knees. In 2020, near the end of a five-month prison sentence for drug possession, Landor was transferred to the Raymond Laborde Correctional Center in Cottonport, Louisiana.

There, Landor reminded officials that the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled in a 2017 case that Louisiana’s policy of cutting the hair of Rastafarians violated the 2000 law.

Landor even handed over ​a copy of that ruling, but a ​guard threw it in the trash, ⁠according to court documents.

Landor was then handcuffed to a chair, held down and shaved.

Landor, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana, sued, but a federal judge threw out his case. In 2023, the 5th Circuit upheld that decision, concluding that the law at issue does ​not allow individual officials to be personally held liable for money damages.

In her dissent, Jackson said prisoners who experience religious ​freedom violations will now ⁠often be left without a remedy.

“And encroachments on prisoners’ statutory rights are likely to happen with fair frequency, as state-empowered prison officials will have little incentive to abide by federal law, even if it is handed to them on a piece of paper,” Jackson wrote.

Landor’s lawyers have called the statute similar to a 1993 law called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act ⁠that prohibits ​religious infringement by the federal government.

In 2020, the Supreme Court allowed for monetary damages claims under the Religious ​Freedom Restoration Act in a case involving a bid by three Muslim U.S. citizens to sue FBI agents who they accused of placing the men on the government’s “no-fly list” for refusing to become informants.
