Gov.

FIRST ON FOX: One of the top Republican contenders for governor in Georgia hyped that he would “be Trump’s favorite governor” and is vying for President Donald Trump’s endorsement, but his Federal Election Commission records reveal he financially backed multiple GOP rivals of Trump during the 2024 presidential race.

In particular, two top contenders, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and billionaire healthcare entrepreneur Rick Jackson, have been sparring over who is more aligned with Trump.

“This Primary Election is very simple,” Jones says on his campaign website. “There is one authentic conservative who has fought for President Trump.” Meanwhile, Jackson has assured voters that he would “be Trump’s favorite governor” after donating $1 million to the president’s political action committee, MAGA Inc. less than two months before he jumped in the race last month.

However, Jackson and his network of companies and investment groups have a history of donating funds to Trump’s rivals, including during his 2024 presidential bid prior to him obtaining the Republican Party nomination, according to a Fox News Digital review of FEC filings. Jackson gave at least $150,000 to Nikki Haley and $100,000 to Vivek Ramaswamy, who were both running against Trump at the time.

[TRUMP ALLY CLAY FULLER ADVANCES IN GEORGIA FIGHT FOR MTG’S FORMER SEAT]

Jackson Investment Group, an entity that Jackson has controlled for decades, according to a 2024 SEC filing, spent at least $150,000 supporting Nikki Haley through the SFA Fund, INC., and Team Stand for America. The SFA Fund, INC. received three separate donations from the Jackson Investment Group totaling at least $140,000 between 2023 and 2024, including $40,000 weeks before Haley suspended her campaign in early 2024. Jackson also directly gave $10,000 to Team Stand for America, a joint fundraising committee that was supporting Haley.

The $100,000 donation from the Jackson Investment Group to Ramaswamy’s super PAC occurred in July 2023, months before he suspended his campaign in Jan. 2024.

Jackson has also donated across the last decade to other Trump rivals like former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., former Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and over $1 million in support of Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign against Trump, FEC filings show. Jackson also contributed funds against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ga., when she was fully on the MAGA train in 2020, and donated to Sen. Lindsay Graham’s, R-S.C., 2016 presidential bid shortly after he dropped out and endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

The $2,700 donation to Cheney’s leadership PAC, The Great Task, came weeks after she joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump after they said he incited the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Jackson, the wealthy founder of Jackson Healthcare who is seeding his own campaign with at least $50 million, shook up a primary field that many had expected was set in stone between Jones, the Trump-endorsed front-runner, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and state Attorney General Chris Carr.

The newcomer to the race has brushed off attacks that he is not sufficiently loyal to Trump, comparing himself to people serving in Trump’s orbit who were once skeptics of the president, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. When reached for comment about his previous donations to Trump rivals, a Jackson campaign spokesperson pivoted to Jones.

“Self-dealing Burt Jones is recycling old attacks to distract from his failing campaign. From shielding doctors who perform sex change surgeries on minors to protecting Chinese vape manufacturers for campaign cash and family profit, the more Georgians learn about Burt Jones, the more they realize he operates like the kingpin of the Atlanta political mob. That’s why even with the endorsement, Burt Jones is losing,” Dave Abrams, a Jackson campaign spokesperson, told Fox News Digital when reached for comment.

“To be clear, President Trump endorsed Burt Jones for Governor,” a former senior Trump White House official told Fox News Digital. “Rick Jackson claiming he is Trump’s ‘favorite’ is downright dishonest.”

Kayla Lott, a campaign spokesperson for Jones, contested the claim from Jackson’s team that he has worked to protect Chinese vape manufacturers, arguing the Lt. Gov.’s efforts on a bill that would have created a directory of authorized nicotine vapor products was about preventing monopolization and promoting free-market solutions. Lott also pointed to Jones’ support for House Bill 54, preventing minors from obtaining sex-change surgeries or drug treatment.

[TRUMP FOE FANI WILLIS BLOCKED YET AGAIN FROM COLLAPSED RICO CASE AS PRESIDENT PUSHES TO CLAW BACK MILLIONS]

“Never Trumper Rick Jackson bankrolled candidates running against President Trump and the America First agenda,” Lott said. “Now he’s lying to voters to try and cover it up. As the only Trump-endorsed candidate in this race, Lt. Governor Burt Jones will always stand up for Georgians and stand with our President. Not even Slick Rick can buy his way out of his own record _ .”

Even before his support for Bush in 2016, Jackson supported Romney, another Trump rival who has described the president as a “phony” and a “fraud.” FEC filings show that Jackson spent over $100,000 supporting Romney’s presidential campaign and his political action committee, Romney Victory Inc. Trump repeatedly said Romney “choked” in 2012 and “let us all down.”

Jackson, Jones, Carr and Raffensperger will duke it out in their upcoming primary on May 19, with the general election to follow in early November.

Silicosis, lung disease once linked to mining, hits workers in countertops industry

    March 12, 2026 / 5:00 AM EDT / KFF Health News

César Manuel González, 37, used to work with stone that was engineered to endure: dense, polished slabs designed to outlast the kitchens in which they were installed.

Engineered quartz countertops have surged in popularity in the home renovation market, with industry analysts estimating the global engineered stone market at around $30 billion. It’s continuing to expand as quartz surfaces replace natural stone in kitchens in the United States and worldwide.

When González was working, the dust that rose from his saw didn’t look extraordinary. It settled on his clothes, in his hair, across the shop floor. In a small countertop fabrication shop, he cut marble and granite before shifting to engineered stone after the 2008-09 recession, when demand for cheaper quartz countertops surged.

But the crystalline silica released while the engineered stone was cut and polished also settled into his lungs, scarring them beyond repair. What began as breathlessness hardened into silicosis, an irreversible disease that stiffens the lungs until even ordinary movement becomes effort.

A lung transplant was his path forward. The procedure can extend survival, but it redraws the boundaries of a life: anti-rejection drugs every day, constant monitoring, vulnerability to infection, the knowledge that breathing depends on the fragile acceptance of another person’s donated organ.

González, who was diagnosed with silicosis in 2023, is not alone in dealing with a disease that once was associated with miners at the end of long careers. It’s now prevalent among the much younger, often Hispanic men who work in this industry, physicians and public health officials say.

File photo: A stone countertop fabricator creates a cloud of dust while wearing a mask to help protect against airborne particles which can contribute to silicosis at a shop in Sun Valley, California, on Oct. 31, 2023. Brian van der Brug / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

In the United States, cases are appearing in countertop fabrication shops from California to Texas, Florida, and the Northeast. Because silicosis is not a nationally reportable disease and surveillance varies by state, no comprehensive national count exists. But clinicians who treat occupational lung disease say the number of workers — often men in their 30s and 40s — diagnosed after cutting engineered stone has risen sharply over the past decade.

As of early March, California had identified 519 confirmed cases of engineered-stone-associated silicosis and 29 deaths since 2019. The median age at diagnosis is 46; at death, 49.

Doctors don’t debate whether working with engineered stone can scar lungs.

Manufacturers argue, though, that proper ventilation, wet cutting, and respirators can make fabrication safe. Workers, physicians, and plaintiffs’ attorneys counter that a material composed almost entirely of crystalline silica may be impossible to handle safely at scale.

“This is comparable to the tobacco industry saying cigarettes are safe,” said Dr. David Michaels, an assistant labor secretary under President Barack Obama who led the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

More than 370 lawsuits have been filed by workers who say engineered stone manufacturers failed to warn employees about the risks or sold a product that cannot be fabricated safely. At the same time, members of Congress are considering legislation that would largely shield manufacturers from liability in those cases, turning a workplace health crisis into a national debate over regulation, responsibility, and the limits of civil litigation.

Gustavo Reyes, 36, is part of that debate. Like González, he spent the early years of his career cutting marble and granite before shifting to engineered stone, a quartz-based material that can contain up to 95% silica and generates far more hazardous dust when cut.

In the shop, he said, cutting was done with water to control the dust. But finishing work — sanding and shaping — generated heavy dust. He said he wore disposable respirator masks or a reusable elastomeric respirator with filters. A door was kept open. Fans ran overhead.

When he was diagnosed in 2021, he did not know what silicosis meant. The doctor told him that there was no medication and that he had three to five years to live. He received a lung transplant in 2023.

Asked who he believes is responsible, Reyes answered: “The industries who created the artificial stone, the product.” Manufacturers dispute that characterization. Major companies say engineered stone can be fabricated safely when employers follow OSHA dust controls, including wet cutting, ventilation, and respirator use.

    An old disease, reengineered

Silicosis is not new. It was synonymous with mining disasters and sandblasting, most notoriously in the Hawks Nest Tunnel tragedy, when hundreds of workers drilling through silica-rich rock in West Virginia in the early 1930s developed acute silicosis after months of unprotected exposure to dust. In 1938, Labor Secretary Frances Perkins advised that the disease could be prevented if dust controls were conscientiously applied.

A doctor points out a lung disease caused by silicosis on an X-ray in this file photo from 2016. Themba Hadebe / AP

What is new is the industry in which it has resurfaced.

Engineered stone, often marketed as “quartz,” is typically composed of crushed quartz bound with resins and pigments. Unlike marble, which contains little crystalline silica, engineered slabs contain very high levels of the substance.

    Cutting changes the material.

“When you grind it, when you cut it, you’re pulverizing it,” said Dr. Robert Blink, an occupational and environmental medicine specialist who treats patients with advanced silicosis in Chicago and is a member of the Western Occupational and Environmental Medical Association. “You’re weaponizing the silica.”

Power tools fracture the surface into respirable particles small enough to lodge deep in the lungs. Repeated exposure triggers inflammation and fibrosis. Once scarring begins, it doesn’t reverse.

What happens when you look for it

In California, physicians say the pattern emerged gradually.

Dr. Robert Harrison, an occupational medicine physician at the University of California-San Francisco, helped identify the first cluster of engineered stone silicosis cases in California in 2019 after several workers from the same countertop fabrication shop died or were diagnosed with the disease. He described the crisis as “the largest outbreak of silicosis in decades.” What initially appeared as isolated cases of unexplained lung scarring in young men resolved into a recognizable occupational epidemic once work histories were examined.

Dr. Jane Fazio, a pulmonologist at UCLA, recalls seeing advanced fibrosis in otherwise healthy workers. “They have families. They were working full-time,” she said. Some experienced respiratory failure within a few years.

When doctors compared work histories, the pattern became unmistakable: Many of the men had worked in small shops cutting and polishing engineered stone countertops.

Dr. Sheiphali Gandhi, an occupational and environmental pulmonologist at UCSF, warned that the true burden remains uncertain. “We’re missing cases,” she said. “There’s no national surveillance system for this.”

California designated silicosis a reportable disease in 2025. Since 2019, statewide surveillance has identified hundreds of cases linked to engineered stone. The numbers probably underestimate the toll, though California’s dashboard makes the illness visible.

Outside California, there is no comparable tracking.

    Early warnings

California was not the first place this happened.

The earliest modern alarm came from Israel. Caesarstone, a company founded on a kibbutz in the late 1980s, helped popularize quartz countertops globally.

Israeli physicians began documenting aggressive silicosis in young countertop workers as early as 1997.

“We had never seen this before,” said Dr. Mordechai Kramer, a retired pulmonologist who previously worked at Rabin Medical Center in Israel. “In classic silicosis, you expect long exposure, decades. Here, it was much shorter.”

    Several patients required lung transplantation.

Despite the warning signs, the market continued to expand.

Australia confronted the same pattern in the late 2010s.

Rather than wait for sporadic diagnoses, Australian regulators launched systematic CT-based screening of artificial-stone workers. Disease prevalence was far higher than anticipated.

Dr. Ryan Hoy, a respiratory physician and occupational health researcher at Australia’s Monash University, described severe disease in workers with relatively short exposures.

Authorities examined whether wet cutting, ventilation, and respirators could reduce exposure sufficiently. They ultimately concluded that even with controls, fabrication of high-silica engineered stone posed unacceptable risk.

In 2024, Australia prohibited the manufacture, supply, and installation of engineered stone containing high levels of crystalline silica. Manufacturers pivoted toward lower- and zero-silica formulations.

In the United States: Who’s to blame?

Fabrication in the U.S. continues under OSHA’s silica standard, which relies on exposure limits, wet cutting, ventilation, and respiratory protection. Manufacturers argue that compliance works and that the problem lies with shops that fail to follow the rules.

OSHA first adopted silica limits in 1971 based on research from mining, quarrying, and foundry work. Although the agency updated the rule in 2016, it regulates crystalline silica broadly and does not distinguish between natural stone and high-silica engineered quartz.

The regulatory debate has now spilled into Congress. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Stone Slab Products Act, introduced in September by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), would largely shield manufacturers and distributors of engineered stone from civil lawsuits arising from the manufacture or sale of their products. McClintock’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The bill was the subject of a January House Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

Supporters of the measure argue that manufacturers should not be held liable for injuries caused by employers who fail to follow OSHA standards. Opponents warn that removing litigation pressure would eliminate one of the few mechanisms capable of driving product reform if the material itself cannot be safely handled.

Michaels, the former OSHA official, sees the stakes as historical. “Litigation drives change,” he said, pointing to past battles over asbestos and tobacco.

Plaintiffs’ attorneys argue that compliance with the OSHA silica standard does not eliminate risk.

“It’s not a few bad actors,” said Raphael Metzger, a product liability attorney who has filed roughly 200 silicosis-related injury cases and a class action seeking medical monitoring. He said the issue is the product’s composition, not isolated regulatory noncompliance.

James Nevin, a tort attorney representing workers in silicosis cases, framed the congressional debate as a fight over accountability. “When it comes to causation, there’s no question,” he said, arguing that the wave of cases explains why manufacturers are now seeking what he calls “a manufacturer bailout.”

In mid-2025, Caesarstone US introduced its first products containing less than 1% silica. In response to questions, Irene Williams, a spokesperson for Caesarstone, said, “The company is not responding as these are matters of pending litigation.”

The U.S. engineered stone market is dominated by a handful of large brands — including Caesarstone, Spain-based Cosentino, and U.S.-based Cambria — while the volume of slabs imported from Asian manufacturers is growing.

Cosentino, too, is moving to low-silica products: “One third of the portfolio, including most new collections, contain less than 10% of crystalline silica,” said Kamela Kettles, a Cosentino spokesperson. “Cosentino will not be providing additional commentary at this time,” she said.

Commenting on behalf of Cambria, Mark Duffy, a communications consultant for the company, wrote, “Reckless employers are criminally violating the law, exposing workers to deadly working conditions.” He added that engineering and administrative controls, when properly used, are effective in reducing exposures below OSHA limits and said Cambria maintains exposures below the OSHA Action Level in its own facilities.

While Caesarstone and Cosentino are headquartered overseas, Cambria is based in Minnesota. Its chief executive, Marty Davis, has been a major Republican political donor, contributing millions of dollars to President Donald Trump’s election campaigns as well as to other Republican candidates and political action committees, according to federal campaign finance records. Davis has also contributed to the campaign of Rep. Brad Finstad (R-Minn.), a co-sponsor of the legislation. Finstad’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Nevin, the attorney, said the bill would give manufacturers “free rein” from civil liability.

He also questions whether regulatory enforcement alone can address the problem. Even before the Trump administration’s funding and staffing cuts, “you had a better chance of being struck by lightning than being visited by OSHA,” he said, arguing that inspections are too infrequent to prevent disease in an industry composed largely of small shops.

    Breathing on borrowed time

For González, the debate arrives after the fact. The dust he inhaled has already reshaped his life.

And Reyes’ transplanted lungs may last years, but not decades. The median survival time for transplanted lungs is about eight years, UCSF’s Gandhi said.

Reyes said he hopes people shopping for countertops understand that buying artificial stone “will harm the worker. The one who cuts it, the one who manufactures it.”

Senate GOP eyes blame game as Trump-backed SAVE Act heads for defeat

Thune tees up SAVE America Act for a vote next week, but won’t launch the talking filibuster

Senate Republicans know that Trump-backed voter ID legislation is doomed to fail and are trying to find a way to pin the blame on Senate Democrats.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to bring the bill to the floor next week, but Republicans won’t take the route of launching into a talking filibuster despite pressure from President Donald Trump and the GOP base to do so.

“We don’t have the votes either to proceed, get on a talking filibuster, nor to sustain one if we got on it,” Thune said. “But that is just a function of math, and there isn’t anything I can do about that. I mean, I understand the president’s got a passion to see this issue addressed, as we all do.”

While the end result after an exhaustive marathon of debate would allow Republicans to pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act at a simple-majority threshold, Thune has time and again warned that the votes aren’t there among Republicans to block Democratic amendments that could completely reshape the bill.

Still, Trump and a sphere of online conservative voices are demanding that the bill pass at any cost. Trump warned that if it does not, Republicans will fall flat in the upcoming midterm election cycle.

“It will guarantee the midterms. If you don’t get it, big trouble,” Trump told House Republicans at their annual policy retreat earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are nearly unified in their opposition to the bill, save for Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., which all but ensures its failure in the upper chamber.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., reiterated his opposition to the SAVE America Act and charged that it was legislation geared toward “destroying” and “purging” voter rolls across the country.

“This is a bill that destroys the country,” Schumer said. “And it is not about showing ID when you show up to vote.”

The other option for the GOP would be to nuke the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act, which some argue Democrats would do anyway when they eventually regain control of the upper chamber.

There is not an appetite among Republicans to blow up the filibuster either.

“I suggest our first goal will be to try and pass it, but I understand how difficult that is, and I’m sympathetic with the position of not ending the filibuster,” Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Fox News Digital. “But short of that, our next goal ought to be to make sure the Democrats get blamed, because they’re the ones that are truly blocking this.”

A likely strategy that Republicans will turn to is in the spirit of the talking filibuster, just without the marathon of debate and amendment votes that process would yield.

Johnson, who, along with Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rick Scott, R-Fla., met with Trump to push for the SAVE America Act, said that instead of a straight up-or-down vote on the bill, Republicans could flood the floor with amendments in a genuine bid to reshape the bill. Then would come a final vote at the end of the amendment flurry.

    Image 48: placeholder

Those add-ons to the bill would include tweaks that Trump has requested, like nixing mail-in ballots save for certain exceptions, banning men from women’s sports and halting transgender surgical procedures on minors.

“We’re getting the Democrats on record voting, ‘Oh, you want to keep mutilating children on the altar of transgenderism,’” Johnson said.

Another route to pass the bill could be through the budget reconciliation process, which Republicans used to ram Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” through Congress last year.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., has been the most vocal proponent of that tactic. But in order for the SAVE America Act to survive the reconciliation route, it would have to pass muster under the Byrd Rule, which requires that anything crammed into a reconciliation package have a budgetary effect.

Kennedy argued the best way to counter that is to lawyer up.

“It really comes down to what the [Senate] parliamentarian says, and I would get the best minds I could find to try to draft a provision that would survive Byrd,” Kennedy said. “When you argue or debate with the parliamentarian, you’ve got to be ready. You can’t just walk in there and pull it out of your orifices.”

WASHINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) – The top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee said on Thursday that recent incidents involving the government’s use of a laser-based anti-drone system in ‌Texas put the flying public at risk, and government agencies must address serious issues.

“These incidents highlighted serious process failures that expose the flying public to unacceptable safety risks,” Senator Maria Cantwell wrote to the Pentagon, Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Homeland Security and other agencies in a letter seen by Reuters.

“It is unacceptable that this system was deployed without adequate coordination with FAA, which likely violated the law,” she added.

The U.S. military errantly shot down a government drone with a laser-based anti-drone system on February 25, leading the FAA to expand an area where flights are barred around Fort Hancock, Texas. The incident followed a February 18 decision by the FAA to halt all flights for 10 days at the nearby El Paso airport, an order it lifted after about eight hours.

Cantwell noted the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics would face potential drone threats and said each U.S. government agency “with counter-drone responsibilities needs to ‌be prepared now to act swiftly in the face of any such threat without jeopardizing aviation safety.”

She also said she wanted a briefing from the agencies by March 25 on the steps they would take to ensure coordination, and outline how counter-drone efforts would be implemented at state and local levels.

“We need leadership at your respective agencies to allocate appropriate resources and attention to fix these coordination problems without delay – before a preventable tragedy occurs,” she said.

The Pentagon and FAA did not immediately comment on the letter but said last week that they planned to test high-energy lasers designed to counter drones, aiming to address the FAA’s safety concerns.

U.S. Deputy Transportation Secretary Steve Bradbury said better coordination was needed. He told Reuters last week that testing was necessary so the FAA could “get comfortable with what (the laser system’s) limitations are, how it can be adjusted, how it can be controlled.”

As pennies begin to disappear, states grappling with “rounding” problem for cash purchases

    March 12, 2026 / 7:53 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Months after the last of the United States’ one-cent coins were pressed, some states are beginning to offer their own two cents on the penny problem by setting rounding guidance for cash purchases.

President Trump announced an end to penny production early last year, saying it was wasteful. It cost 3.7 cents to make each 1-cent coin in 2024, according to the U.S. Mint’s annual report from that year.

The move led to a shortage of pennies in cash registers last summer, forcing consumers and businesses to confront a penniless future in which making exact change would be difficult.

Some retailers began pulling out all the stops just to scrounge up some pennies.

    Major retailers took varied approaches.

The Treasury Department has said it will continue circulating the roughly 114 billion pennies that exist for “as long as possible.” Pennies must still be accepted as payment.

One solution to the penny problem is rounding to the nearest nickel, using a practice called symmetrical rounding. If the final price, after taxes, ends in one, two, six or seven cents, payments in cash round down. For example, $1.91 or $1.92 becomes $1.90. If the price ends in three, four, eight or nine, cash payments round up. For $1.98 or $1.99, the consumer pays $2.

    Lawmakers weigh in

A bill introduced last year in Congress and passed out of the House Financial Services Committee would apply symmetrical rounding across the country. U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., said in an email the federal law is important to prevent a “confusing patchwork of state policies.”

The bill hasn’t been voted on in the House and would still need to move through the Senate before reaching Mr. Trump’s desk.

In the meantime, bills to deal with penniless cash transactions have passed both chambers and await governors’ signatures in Arizona, Florida, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington. Some states are proposing that businesses be allowed to round cash purchases, while others are considering requiring it.

In Indiana, a bill signed into law this month by Republican Gov. Mike Braun tells businesses they must round cash purchases for all transactions that don’t end in a zero or five. Lawmakers revised that provision in a second bill that makes rounding optional, which would take effect Sunday if Braun signs it into law.

In both bills, Indiana businesses can choose to always round cash purchases up to the nearest nickel, always round down or round up or down depending on the amount.

In Republican-led Tennessee, legislation makes symmetrical rounding exempt from legal claims under a state consumer protection law but doesn’t require rounding.

“It is to provide safe harbor for private businesses,” said Republican Rep. Charlie Baum, the bill sponsor in Tennessee, during floor debate.

Rounding bills have been introduced in about two dozen states since late last year, according to an Associated Press analysis using the bill-tracking service Plural.

Outside of lawmaking bodies, some state agencies have published guidelines to advise that rounding should happen after tax, and that businesses must make sure the full taxed amount still goes to the state.

Cash isn’t used as ubiquitously since the rise in electronic payment methods. Still, about 8 in 10 U.S. adults said they recently used cash in a 2024 survey conducted by the Federal Reserve. Cash was more often used by older adults and those in lower-income households.

Concern about the impact on prices

The Treasury wrote online that prices would be “rounded down just as often as they will be rounded up, so there should be no overall effect on consumer prices.”

But researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond used a 2023 survey to show prices that didn’t end in zero or five were especially likely to end in eight or nine. Payment amounts could be different when multiple items are purchased or depending on the tax rate but overall, prices more often being rounded up would lead to millions of dollars gained by businesses and lost by consumers collectively, amounting to a few pennies lost per person.

As businesses have introduced rounding, some Americans have taken to social media to say they feel scammed, even if it’s a penny or two at a time.

Nikki Capozzo-Hennessy, 50, said she tends to pay in cash because it makes her more conscious of her spending. The Trumbull, Connecticut, resident posted her grocery store receipt online when she noticed the rounding adjustment on a purchase of $8.73, with tax. The store chose to round down and she gained three cents.

Capozzo-Hennessy said it might feel taxing if she had to hand over extra pennies every time, but she also thinks it’s practical to stick with one rule. She runs a food truck business and said they’d likely use symmetrical rounding to be consistent.

“At the end of the day it’s three cents, but I can imagine with all the purchases that you make, it can add up,” Capozzo-Hennessy said.

Washington state Rep. April Berg, who introduced a rounding bill there, said she understands people who feel frustrated losing a penny but that the elimination of the hard currency leaves little option.

“We did make sure that everyone is allowed to pay exactly what they owe,” Berg said of her legislation.

The Treasury says ceasing penny production will save $56 million annually, but rounding could increase demand for nickels. The 5-cent coins also are costly to make, reaching nearly 14 cents each in 2024, according to the Mint.

The proposed federal legislation currently includes a potential cost-saving solution, allowing the Treasury to adjust the coin’s composition to use cheaper zinc and nickel instead of copper and nickel.

Connecticut officer having “mild anxiety attack” took ambulance sent for man dying from police shooting, investigation finds

    March 12, 2026 / 7:07 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A man who was shot by police and later died had to wait 10 extra minutes for an ambulance after an officer having a “mild anxiety attack” took the first one that arrived at the scene, according to a newly released state investigation.

Dyshan Best, 39, was shot in the back last year as he fled from officers in Bridgeport, Connecticut. A report released Tuesday by the state’s inspector general found that the shooting was justified because Best had a gun in his hand and the officer pursuing him had reasons to fear for his own safety.

But the report raised questions about what took place after the March 31 shooting, which left Best, who was Black, bleeding with severe internal injuries.

The first ambulance called to take Best to the hospital arrived at the scene at 6:02 p.m., about 14 minutes after the shooting. However, at the urging of other officers, that ambulance was used to take away a white police officer, Erin Perrotta, who had been involved in the foot chase, the report said.

In this photo taken from video released by the Bridgeport Police Department, Dyshan Best runs from a Bridgeport Police officer while holding a gun, March 31, 2025, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Bridgeport Police Department via AP

The American Medical Response (AMR) report regarding Perrotta noted the nature of the call to be “Stab/Gunshot/Penetrating Trauma,” according to the state report.

According to the AMR report, “PD on scene told crew to ‘hurry up and take their partner.’ PD rushed crew off scene, no info was given to crew. Pt wants to be transported to closest facility for further eval. Pt jumped into the ambulance and was secured with straps.”

Paramedics reported that Perrotta declined treatment in the ambulance.

“I am fine, I just needed to get out of here,” she said, according to the report. Another officer described Perrotta at the time as “visibly hysterical (crying and breathing rapidly) and had blood all over her uniform,” the report said.

The second ambulance arrived at the scene at about 6:12 p.m. Hospital records said Best was brought in for treatment at 6:22 p.m. — about 14 minutes after Perrotta got to the hospital, according to the report.

Best died at 7:41 p.m. as he was undergoing treatment for the gunshot wound, which damaged his liver and right kidney.

The report by Inspector General Eliot Prescott did not say whether the delay in waiting for another ambulance contributed to Best’s death.

One of Best’s nieces, Tatiana Barrett, told The Associated Press that revelations from the report have angered and saddened family and friends. They believe he could have survived if he was taken to the hospital in the first ambulance.

“Honestly it’s heartbreaking hearing all these details,” she said. “We were looking for justice. In our community, we don’t know what justice looks like. We want justice for my uncle. We truly believe he was murdered.”

A spokesperson for Bridgeport police, Shawnna White, declined to comment Wednesday when asked about Perrotta taking the first ambulance. She said in an email that the police department’s Internal Affairs Division would conduct its own investigation.

Perrotta currently is out on administrative leave due to an unrelated matter, CBS affiliate WFSB-TV reported.

Phone and email messages were left Wednesday for Perrotta, Mayor Joe Ganim’s office, Prescott’s office, the city police union and Darnell Crosland, a lawyer for Best’s family.

The series of events began when someone called 911 to report a brawl involving about 30 people, including some who had guns. A witness pointed officers to two men in an SUV and said they had a gun, the report says.

Perrotta approached the passenger’s side of the vehicle and opened the door. Best is seen on police body camera video in the passenger’s seat, holding a bottle of alcohol, a vape pen and a cellphone. Perrotta asks Best to step out of the SUV so she could pat him down, the video shows. Best gets out of the vehicle, then runs away with police chasing after him.

During the chase, Best pulled out a 9 mm handgun, the report said. As he ran into a lot filled with disabled cars, the officer chasing him, Yoon Heo, fired his gun twice, striking Best once.

The inspector general concluded, based on the video evidence, that the shooting was justified because Best pointed his gun backward at Heo as he ran.

“Based on my office’s investigation, I conclude that Officer Heo had a reasonable belief that he was in immediate danger of serious injury or death from Dyshan Best and that it was necessary to use deadly physical force to protect himself,” Prescott said in the report.

While wounded on the ground, Best said, “I got shot,” the videos show. Heo responds, “You pulled a gun on me,” but Best says “No I didn’t.” Heo then says “Yeah you did.” Prescott said a handgun was found near Best at the scene.

After the shooting, the family’s lawyer, Crosland disputed that Best had a gun and claimed he was instead holding a vape pen. Prescott said police body camera video clearly show Best with a pistol in his hand.

Best’s niece, Barrett, said he was a truck driver who had returned to his hometown of Bridgeport to attend a friend’s funeral.
