United States Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard speaks on the phone while standing inside a vehicle loaded with boxes outside the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search warrant there in relation to the 2020 election, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter, in Union City, Georgia, U.S. January 28, 2026.

    Elijah Nouvelage/Reuters

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard put President Donald Trump on the phone with some of the FBI agents who had conducted a controversial search of an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, last week, two sources familiar with the call told CNN.

The unusual call — first reported by The New York Times — underscores Trump’s involvement and interest in the probe of alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election. One source said Trump directed Gabbard to go to Atlanta for the search.

Gabbard met with the agents the day after the search, sources said, and during the meeting, Gabbard called Trump to check-in and asked if he wanted to talk to the agents. The president agreed and gave the agents a brief “pep talk,” one of the sources said, insisting the conversation did not go beyond that.

Trump has made no secret of his belief that he won Georgia in 2020 — though he did not — and of his desire for his government to adjust election procedures to police what he sees as rampant fraud. In an interview airing Monday with Dan Bongino, the former deputy director of the FBI, Trump called on Republicans to “nationalize the voting” as he again falsely claimed errors in past election results. Democratic election officials have been bracing for potential federal government intrusion in the midterms.

“The Republicans should say, we want to take over, we should take over the voting, the voting in at least many, 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” the president said.

“We have states that are so crooked and they’re counting votes. We have states that I won, that show I didn’t win. Now you’re going to see something in Georgia where they were able to get with a court order, the ballots, you’re going to see some interesting things come out,” he added.

FBI agents exit the Fulton County Elections Hub and Operation Center while serving a warrant on January 28 near metro Atlanta.

    CNN

The FBI declined to comment on the call and Gabbard’s role in Fulton County. CNN has reached out to the White House and Gabbard’s office for comment. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN’s Dana Bash this weekend that to his knowledge, Trump did not play a role in the Fulton search.

“I don’t believe he was involved,” Blanche said. “This is a criminal grand jury investigation, and I can’t comment on it beyond what you just said.”

Asked later about comments from Trump suggesting he had knowledge of the case, Blanche responded: “I’m not around when the president’s briefed or not briefed. What I said is that this is a criminal investigation, so it’s a tightly held, as it must be under the law. It’s a grand jury investigation.”

But on Fox News Monday night, Blanche signaled he had no problem with Trump talking to the FBI agents who were involved.

“The president talks to law enforcement all week long. The fact that he talked with agents working hard doesn’t surprise me and actually I love it. It’s great,” Blanche said.

Gabbard had been spotted on the scene Wednesday after FBI agents executed a search warrant for the Fulton County elections office, near Atlanta, taking 700 boxes of election materials. The search was related to an effort by the Justice Department to seize voting data and search for alleged fraud in the county, a source familiar with the matter told CNN at the time. An official in Fulton County has since announced the county will challenge the legality of the FBI’s search and seizure of 2020 election records. Blanche told CNN he did not know why Gabbard was present.

“I don’t know why the director was there,” Blanche said. “She is not part of the grand jury investigation, but she is for sure a key part of our efforts at election integrity and making sure that we have free and fair elections. She’s an expert in that space and it’s a big part of what she and her team look at every day.”

Gabbard has carved out a lane for herself pursuing Trump’s election integrity priorities in recent months, boosting her standing within the administration and Trump after a rocky start.

It is well known within the administration that Gabbard and John Ratcliffe, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, have had a fraught relationship

“That’s been smoothed over, and they work together fine now, but it’s also why Tulsi has focused her efforts on election integrity,” a senior White House official told CNN. The official added that it helps give each of the top officials a different lane of focus.

After her Fulton County trip, Gabbard was slated to address a conference of election officials on Friday in Washington, DC. Election officials from both parties had hoped someone from the Trump administration would explain what the administration was doing in Fulton County. But Gabbard ultimately did not attend due to what a conference spokesperson said were “scheduling conflicts.”

CNN’s Holmes Lybrand and Sean Lyngaas contributed to this report.

All immigration officers in Minneapolis will start wearing body cameras, Noem says

    Updated on: February 2, 2026 / 7:42 PM EST / CBS News

All federal immigration agents in Minneapolis will begin wearing body cameras, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said Monday, as the department faces intense scrutiny over a pair of fatal shootings by federal agents in the Twin Cities.

“Effective immediately we are deploying body cameras to every officer in the field in Minneapolis,” Noem said in a post on X, writing that she had discussed the move with the heads of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.

She added that the policy will be “expanded nationwide” as funding becomes available, writing: “We will rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to DHS law enforcement across the country.”

President Trump expressed support for the decision on Monday, saying body cameras “generally tend to be good for law enforcement because people can’t lie about what’s happening.”

The Department of Homeland Security has deployed some 3,000 agents to the Minneapolis area, part of a monthslong crackdown on people accused of being in the U.S. illegally and amid an ongoing fraud scandal in Minnesota.

But the department has faced bipartisan criticism and questions about its tactics since the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by two CBP agents in Minneapolis late last month, which came weeks after Renee Good was killed by an ICE agent. White House border czar Tom Homan, who was dispatched to Minnesota after Pretti’s death, said last week that he’s preparing for a “drawdown” of forces in the state, but the timeline is not clear.

Federal agents already wear body cameras in certain cases. DHS has body camera footage from multiple federal agents who were on the scene for Pretti’s death, CBS News previously reported. The footage was referenced in a preliminary report to Congress by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

A federal judge last year ordered federal agents to wear body cameras during all “law enforcement activities” in an earlier immigration surge in Chicago. The judge later told federal officials the order “wasn’t a suggestion” and was “not up for debate.”

Senate Democrats are pressing for all immigration agents to be required by law to wear body cameras, part of a litany of reforms sought by the party in exchange for their votes to fund DHS for the rest of the fiscal year. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the demand last week as a “masks off, body cameras on” policy.

A previously negotiated bill to fund DHS until September included $20 million for ICE and CBP to purchase body cameras. But since Pretti’s shooting, Democratic senators have said they will not vote for any DHS funding legislation that doesn’t include deeper reforms. The Senate voted late last week to extend DHS funding for two weeks to buy Congress time to hash out a longer-term deal. The House is expected to vote on that temporary funding measure this week.

Former President Joe Biden signed an executive order in 2022 setting the stage for requiring all federal agents to wear body cameras in “all appropriate circumstances,” part of a broader set of changes to federal law enforcement. That order was rescinded by Mr. Trump shortly after his second inauguration last year.

House GOP majority shrinks to just one vote as Johnson swears in new House Democrat

    Published February 2, 2026 7:00pm EST | Fox News

The House Republican majority just got reduced to a perilously slim one-vote margin thanks to a Democrat’s victory in Texas over the weekend.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., swore in newly minted Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, on Monday evening, bringing the overall House of Representatives margin to 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats.

That means if a bill gets no Democratic support and the House is in full attendance, losing more than one GOP vote will result in a 216-216 tie — meaning it would fail to pass.

[DEMOCRATIC TAKEOVER FEARS SOAR AS HOUSE REPUBLICANS CLING TO FRAGILE MAJORITY]

Johnson is no stranger to dealing with slim margins and has eked out significant GOP victories while dealing with majorities between two and three seats.

But this is a particularly difficult week for House GOP leaders who are scrambling to end an ongoing partial government shutdown.

The House is expected to vote on a funding compromise hashed out between Senate Democrats and the White House sometime on Tuesday, and Republicans will need nearly everyone in lockstep for the legislation to survive a chamber-wide “rule vote.”

Rule votes are procedural hurdles that traditionally fall along partisan lines.

[REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: HOUSE EXODUS THREATENS JOHNSON’S GRIP ON POWER AS OVER 40 MEMBERS HEAD FOR EXIT]

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee was endorsed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus Political Action Committee.(Office of the Harris County Attorney)

Menefee, a former attorney for Houston’s Harris County, won a special congressional election in a left-leaning district in Texas that has been vacant for nearly a year.

He’s replacing the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, who died while in office in March 2025.

The Associated Press reported that Menefee defeated former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, a fellow Democrat, in Saturday’s runoff election to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died last March.

Sylvester, a former longtime state lawmaker, served two terms as Houston mayor before winning election to Congress in 2024 to fill the seat of the late longtime Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

While Texas has redrawn its congressional maps for the 2026 midterms, as part of the high-stakes redistricting battle between President Donald Trump and Republicans versus Democrats, the special election used the state’s current district lines.

The addition of another lawmaker into the House Democrats’ ranks will give Republican leadership in the chamber further headaches.

And House GOP leaders are painfully aware of the politically difficult situation they’re in.

“They’d better be here,” Johnson said of his Republican members last month. “I told everybody, and not in jest, I said, no adventure sports, no risk-taking, take your vitamins. Stay healthy and be here.”

Trump says he’s not planning to rip down Kennedy Center

    February 2, 2026 / 7:22 PM EST / CBS News

As President Trump prepares to shut down the Kennedy Center for renovations, sources told CBS News there has been no discussion of demolishing or gutting the building.

The president told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday he plans to create a “brand new” Kennedy Center using the 55-year-old arts institution’s existing steel and some of its marble, drawing speculation about the extent of the planned two-year renovation project.

Asked by CBS News on Monday if he plans to tear down the building, he said: “I’m not ripping it down. I’ll be using the steel, so we’re using the structure.”

He said his changes will cost about $200 million.

Sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that Mr. Trump has so far not asked for estimates for gutting the building.

The scheduled changes, which will start this summer, include a new roof and replacement of some marble and grout. There will also be necessary renovations to the promenade section of the building that stretches out over the road toward the river, where existing steel will be reused, one of the sources said. One of the two free-standing stages in the grand foyer will likely be removed, and possibly replaced with a bar.

But the building’s basic layout, with the three theaters and the Hall of Nations and the Hall of States, will remain, the sources told CBS News.

In the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said that as a real estate builder, “you want to sit with something for a little while before you decide on what you want to do.” He added: “You know, we sat with it” and discovered “it’s dilapidated” and needs to be fixed.

A White House official said the administration doesn’t need congressional approval to temporarily close the building for renovations.

Congress appropriated about $250 million for building renovations last year.

Mr. Trump announced late Sunday that the Kennedy Center would close for construction for about two years, aiming to address what Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell called “decades of deferred maintenance and repairs.” Mr. Trump argued closing the center “will produce a much faster and higher quality result” than enduring partial closures while the building is renovated.

Since returning to the White House last year, Mr. Trump has sought to put his stamp on D.C.-area landmarks. The real estate developer-turned-president had the White House’s East Wing demolished last fall to make room for a planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom. And he commissioned a triumphal arch across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., saying over the weekend he’d like the arch to be “the biggest one” in the world.

Mr. Trump and his allies have also made sweeping changes to the Kennedy Center. Weeks after his inauguration, the president replaced some members of the center’s board of trustees and made himself chair. Last month, the board voted to change the center’s name to the Trump-Kennedy Center, and Mr. Trump’s name was added to the front of the building, drawing criticism from Democrats who argued the name can’t be changed without an act of Congress.

The center has also faced a series of high-profile cancellations. The Broadway hit “Hamilton” pulled out of planned performances, composer Philip Glass canceled a premiere of his new symphony and several other musical artists called off their shows, in many cases citing either the name change or broader concerns about the center’s political direction.

Grenell has criticized the artists who canceled their appearances, saying they were “booked by the previous far left leadership” and accusing them of politicizing the center.

Clintons agree to testify to House Oversight Committee ahead of expected contempt vote

    February 2, 2026 / 8:09 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Bill and Hillary Clinton agreed to testify in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, ahead of expected votes in the House later this week on holding the pair in contempt of Congress.

In an email to the committee on Monday, the Clintons’ legal team said the former president and former secretary of state “accept the terms of your letter and will appear for depositions on mutually agreeable dates.”

“As has been the Committee’s practice, please confirm the House will not move forward with contempt proceedings, as the Chairman stated in his letter this morning,” said the email, which was obtained by CBS News.

Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who chairs the oversight panel, said in a statement late Monday: “The Clintons’ counsel has said they agree to terms, but those terms lack clarity yet again and they have provided no dates for their depositions. The only reason they have said they agree to terms is because the House has moved forward with contempt. I will clarify the terms they are agreeing to and then discuss next steps with my committee members.”

The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Clintons last year, but the pair called the subpoenas legally invalid and refused to appear before the panel, which is probing the Justice Department’s investigations into Epstein. The committee then recommended holding the Clintons in contempt in January.

Both contempt resolutions advanced out of the House Oversight Committee with bipartisan support, though more Democrats supported the one related to Bill Clinton, who has acknowledged previous interactions with Epstein.

Neither Clinton has been accused of any wrongdoing in the Epstein case.

In an effort to avoid the contempt of Congress votes, lawyers for the Clintons said in Jan. 31 letter to the committee that the former president would agree to sit for a four-hour transcribed interview if it takes place in New York City and is “confined to matters related to the investigations and prosecutions” of Epstein. The former secretary of state would offer another sworn declaration to answer any questions the committee still has, the lawyers said. If the committee still requires her in-person testimony, her appearance should follow the same terms as her husband’s testimony, they said.

The Clintons’ legal team asked that the subpoenas and contempt resolutions be withdrawn if the conditions were agreed to.

Responding in a letter earlier Monday, Comer said the panel has “serious concerns” about the offer.

Comer argued the proposed scope of Bill Clinton’s testimony was too limited and “would result in your client answering few questions.” The other demands were “not reasonable” and “insufficient,” Comer said. Comer said the terms proposed for Hillary Clinton’s sworn declaration or appearance were also unacceptable.

The news of the Clintons’ offer was first delivered by Democratic Rep. James Walkinshaw of Virginia during Monday night’s House Rules Committee meeting, which was expected to advance the contempt resolutions and tee them up for floor votes in the coming days.

“I understand that the Clintons have agreed to appear for depositions and have agreed to the terms that you laid out in your most recent letter,” Walkinshaw told Comer as they both appeared before the committee.

Comer said he was unaware of the news. The Clintons’ attorney had emailed the committee with the offer while Comer was testifying, according to a committee aide.

Nikole Killion and Jaala Brown contributed to this report.

The Justice Department (DOJ) has removed its pardon attorney from an internal “Weaponization Working Group,” even as officials say the politically sensitive panel is now meeting more frequently, Fox News has learned.

Ed Martin currently serves as the DOJ’s pardon attorney, a role appointed by President Donald Trump that involves reviewing clemency applications and advising the White House on pardons and commutations. He had also participated in the department’s internal Weaponization Working Group.

A DOJ spokesperson confirmed to Fox News on Monday that Martin had been removed from the working group, though it was not immediately clear why.

“President Trump appointed Ed Martin as Pardon Attorney and Ed continues to do a great job in that role,” a DOJ spokesperson said.

Martin has previously drawn scrutiny over his actions involving New York Attorney General Letitia James. In August, a lawyer representing James criticized Martin for visiting her Brooklyn residence and publicly suggesting she resign, calling the visit a “made-for-media stunt.”

Martin later said he visited the property to “lay eyes on it” and shared images of the visit on social media.
