Renee Dominguez/SXSW Conference & Festivals via Getty Images)

他还是播客”彼得·阿提亚驱动”(The Peter Attia Drive)的主持人,著有《Outlive:长寿的科学与艺术》(Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity)一书。

Dr. Peter Attia, longevity expert, apologizes for “indefensible” emails to Jeffrey Epstein

    February 2, 2026 / 6:39 PM EST / CBS News

Peter Attia, a doctor and author well known for his research on longevity, is apologizing for what he calls “embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible” emails he exchanged with Jeffrey Epstein, after the messages came to light in the Justice Department’s latest release of files related to the Epstein case.

He has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing. But Attia’s name appears in the records released by the Justice Department hundreds of times and his communications with Epstein are more extensive than previously known.

Attia was recently named as a contributor to CBS News. CBS’ parent company, Paramount Skydance, had no comment.

Among the messages, in 2016, Attia wrote to Epstein, “P***y is, indeed, low carb. Still awaiting results on gluten content, though.”

After news reports about the emails, Attia posted on X a long apology and account of his relationship with Epstein. He denied any involvement in criminal activity, said he never flew on Epstein’s plane, never visited his island and never attended “any sex parties.”

The last correspondence between Attia and Epstein appears to have occurred in the spring of 2019, shortly before Epstein’s arrest in July and death on Aug. 10.

He said he regretted “putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public,” and went on to say, “I accept that reality and the humiliation that comes with it.”

Attia said in his post that between 2014 and 2019, he met with Epstein “on approximately seven or eight occasions at his New York City home.” He said they met “regarding research studies and to meet others.”

Peter Attia speaks at the SXSW Conference & Festivals on March 8, 2025 in Austin, Texas. Renee Dominguez/SXSW Conference & Festivals via Getty Images

Included in the documents released Friday was an exchange from 2015 in which Attia had written a note — redacted by the Justice Department — that bore the subject line, “Got a fresh shipment.” Epstein responded, “me too,” with a photo that was also redacted. Attia responded, “Please tell (me) you found that picture on line … bastard.”

    “fraid not,” Epstein said.

Attia wrote back that “the biggest problem with becoming friends with you” is that “[t]he life you lead is so outrageous, and yet I can’t tell a soul.”

Attia claimed in his social media post that the “fresh shipment” referred to a redacted photograph of metformin, “a medication I had just received from the pharmacy for my own use.” (Attia used to take the drug for anti-aging reasons but said he stopped in 2018 because it had negative effects around exercise.)

Epstein’s “me too” response included “a photograph of an adult woman,” Attia said.

“I responded with crude, tasteless banter. Reading that exchange now is very embarrassing, and I will not defend it. I’m ashamed of myself for everything about this,” Attia said. “At the time, I understood this exchange as juvenile, not a reference to anything dark or harmful.”

Epstein at that point had a record as a sex offender from a case in Florida where he’d accepted a 2008 plea deal to avoid federal charges. In 2019, he was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges. His death in his jail cell in August 2019 was ruled a suicide.

Attia said he asked Epstein about his 2008 conviction in Florida and said Epstein “characterized it as prostitution-related charges.”

“In 2018, I came to learn this was grossly minimized,” Attia said. But he also maintained, “I never witnessed illegal behavior and never saw anyone who appeared underage in his presence.”

Attia is the founder of Outlive, an app that translates longevity science into personalized daily practice, and Early Medical, a medical practice that aims to help patients lengthen their healthy lifespan. He is the host of the podcast “The Peter Attia Drive” and author of “Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity.”

    By Devan Cole | 3

Judge wipes away order requiring feds to preserve evidence gathered at Alex Pretti shooting scene

By Devan Cole | 3 hr ago | PUBLISHED Feb 2, 2026, 4:55 PM ET

A Minnesota judge has wiped away an order he issued last month that required federal investigators to preserve evidence gathered at the scene of Alex Pretti’s fatal shooting by immigration officers.

US District Judge Alex Tostrud said he was lifting the emergency order he issued the day of Pretti’s shooting that barred various federal investigatory offices from destroying or altering any evidence related to the incident because he had gotten assurances from federal officials that evidence would be properly maintained.

The judge, an appointee of President Donald Trump, had imposed the requirement at the behest of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office after they raised concerns in court that their own investigative efforts into the incident could be undermined absent his intervention.

“Though the record is not one-sided, the greater weight of the evidence shows Defendants are not likely to destroy or improperly alter evidence related to Mr. Pretti’s shooting during the life of this case, and other relevant considerations do not on balance favor a continuing preservation order,” Tostrud wrote in an 18-page decision.

“The temporary restraining order’s terms are not meaningfully different from defendants’ preservation policies,” the judge wrote. “An ongoing preservation order – and the contempt power that accompanies it – would overlay, not just defendants’ preservation polices, but any investigative measures that might alter evidence.”

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension told CNN that talks with federal investigators on sharing evidence in the case are ongoing, adding that they are “hopeful” an agreement can be reached. Thus far, however, the FBI and Homeland Security Invesdtigations have not shared information with local investigators.

In his ruling, Tostrud went on to say that “examination and testing often leave evidence in a different condition after testing than it was before” and that such potential changes occurring under his now-dissolved order would have forced him to play what he described as an improper role in the government’s investigation into the shooting.

“Legitimate concerns over whether those types of investigative measures comply with a preservation order might reasonably prompt defendants to seek judicial direction,” Tostrud wrote. “That, in turn, would inject the court into Defendants’ investigation, not just their evidence preservation.”

The BCA had been iced out of an earlier federal probe into a different fatal shooting of a US citizen, Renee Good, by federal agents in Minnesota and the lawsuit before Tostrud represented a frenzied effort by the state investigators to ensure they’d later have access to the evidence for their own inspection.

An FBI official swore in court papers last month that “evidence was packaged by trained evidence collectors” who wore the correct personal equipment and packaged the evidence in tamper-proof evidence tape. The evidence the FBI collected is in a secure evidence room with controlled access in the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office.

United Airlines is set to upgrade its reservation system. Here’s what that means for travelers.

    February 2, 2026 / 6:56 PM EST / CBS News

United Airlines is planning a major technology update that will take down its online reservation system early Wednesday.

    [close dialog]

    [close dialog]

The carrier is urging passengers with flights scheduled to depart on Wednesday to check in via United’s website or mobile app on Tuesday to avoid encountering problems. United expects the outage to last roughly four and a half hours, beginning Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. EDT and lasting until 6 a.m. EDT.

An alert on United’s homepage informs travelers that it is “conducting a planned technology upgrade” and that many of its web and app services will not be available during that time, including for employees of the airline.

United is modernizing its aging mainframe flight reservation system, known as Shares. The upgrade requires the airline to transfer reservation data from its current data center in North Carolina to a more high-tech facility in Chicago that the airline said will improve reliability.

Here’s what United customers should know about United’s reservation system upgrade.

What if I am flying on Wednesday?

United’s flight schedule will be temporarily unavailable starting early Wednesday morning. Customers also won’t be able to make new reservations, cancel bookings, check in for flights or retrieve their itineraries.

As such, the airline is urging anyone scheduled to fly on Wednesday morning to check in on Tuesday. That is also when passengers should check bags, which fliers can typically do up to four hours before departure.

The reservation system refresh has been planned for some time, with United canceling impacted flights months ago. The airline notified customers of the changes, affecting roughly 600 flights, at the time.

Customers can still book, complete check-in or make changes to their trips prior to Feb. 4 at 2:30 a.m. EDT, or once the data transfer is completed.

    What could go wrong?

United has rehearsed the data migration process, so things should go smoothly, the airline told CBS News. Travel experts expect relatively little disruption.

“Don’t freak out if you can’t search for flights in the middle of the night,” Scott Keyes, founder and CEO of flight deals website Going.com, told CBS News. “It will come back online soon.’

Of course, if the upgrade doesn’t go as planned, it could spell headaches for customers. Roughly a decade ago, Southwest Airlines suffered a computer outage that dragged on for days, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and thousands more delays.

Clemson basketball player’s teammates pool money to bring her mom from overseas for surprise visit

    February 2, 2026 / 8:04 PM EST / CBS News

For Rusne Augustinaite, home is more than 5,000 miles away.

The 22-year-old junior guard at Clemson University grew up in Lithuania, far from where she’s become one of the best three-point shooters in the Atlantic Coast Conference. And while she has now spent years playing in the U.S., one person has never seen her play a college game in person: her mom.

Travel costs and work obligations kept her mother, Rasa, at home. That was until Augustinaite’s teammates stepped in to help.

After learning how much she missed her family, the Tigers quietly pooled their own money for an unforgettable surprise.

Video of the sweet moment shows Rasa knocking on the door. Augustinaite answers, looking confused for a moment before realizing her mom was standing in front of her. The two come together for an emotional embrace as teammates cheer on in support.

“I don’t know how it didn’t … slip or someone didn’t text it in the wrong group chat or something,” Augustinaite told CBS News. “But they did a great job, and it’s all because of my teammates, and I’m just so happy to have them.”

The reunion was made even sweeter after what happened during Augustinaite’s next game.

With her mom watching from the stands, she delivered one of the best performances of the year, scoring a season-high 21 points as Clemson defeated Southern Methodist University. After the final buzzer, she got the best victory celebration of all — a post-game hug from mom.

President Donald Trump is trying to quell a growing rebellion against the funding deal he negotiated with Senate Democrats as a growing number of House conservatives threaten to sink the legislation if a key demand is not met.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is walking a tightrope with House Republicans demanding the inclusion of election integrity legislation to the Trump-backed deal, which he negotiated with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., last week.

The government is in its third day of a partial shutdown. Adding the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, to the package would send the legislation back to the Senate, where Schumer has already vowed to block it.

That would likely extend what was intended to be a temporary closure.

SCHUMER NUKES GOP PUSH FOR ‘JIM CROW-ERA’ VOTER ID LAWS IN TRUMP-BACKED SHUTDOWN PACKAGE

Trump took to Truth Social to lower the temperature among House Republicans, and noted that he was “working hard with Speaker Johnson to get the current funding deal, which passed in the Senate last week, through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into Law, IMMEDIATELY!”

“We need to get the Government open, and I hope all Republicans and Democrats will join me in supporting this Bill, and send it to my desk WITHOUT DELAY,” Trump said. “There can be NO CHANGES at this time.”

HOUSE DEMOCRATS MUTINY SCHUMER’S DEAL WITH WHITE HOUSE, THREATENING LONGER SHUTDOWN

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have coalesced behind a plan to strip the DHS funding bill from a broader spending package, but Republicans aren’t biting.(Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

“We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats,” he continued. “I hope everyone will vote, YES!”

A cohort of House Republicans, led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., wants to see the SAVE Act attached to the five-bill funding package plus short-term extension for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

It would require states to obtain proof of citizenship in-person when people register to vote and remove non-citizens from voter rolls.

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., told Fox News Digital on Monday that he was leaning against voting to advance the funding deal if the SAVE Act was not attached. Reps. William Timmons, R-S.C., and Eric Burlison, R-Mo., have foreshadowed similar threats.

It’s legislation that has long been shelved since advancing from the House last year. Its passage in the upper chamber is even more unlikely because of the 60-vote filibuster threshold and Senate Democrats’ reticence to even consider supporting it.

‘OPENING PANDORA’S BOX’: MIKE JOHNSON BACKS TRUMP AFTER WARNING WHITE HOUSE ABOUT DEAL WITH DEMOCRATS

Their demands come as the House Rules Committee, the final gatekeeper for most legislation to get a chamber-wide vote, is set to meet Monday evening to consider the funding deal. Johnson met with Rules Committee members on Monday afternoon ahead of their scheduled meeting.

Tacking on the SAVE Act would likely kill any chance of the spending deal earning support from House Democrats, who are already resistant to the deal.

And if it were to make it to the Senate, Democrats in the upper chamber are primed to block it.

Without it, however, the group of House conservatives could kill the spending deal during a procedural hurdle called a “rule vote.” The House Rules Committee advancing the bill sets up a chamber-wide rule vote, which if successful would unlock debate and set up a final vote on passage.

Rule votes generally fall along partisan lines. And with a one-vote majority after the swearing-in of a new House Democrat who won a special election in Texas over the weekend, Johnson can afford little dissent.

Schumer laid out an edict on Monday against the idea, where he accused Republicans of pushing legislation “reminiscent of Jim Crow-era laws,” that he argued would act as a means to suppress voters rather than encourage more secure elections.

“It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to,” Schumer said in a statement. “If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown.”

Virginia man who had affair with au pair found guilty of murdering wife, another man

    Updated on: February 2, 2026 / 7:30 PM EST / CBS/AP

A Virginia man having an affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair was found guilty Monday of murdering his wife and another man that prosecutors say was lured to the house as a fall guy.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, told police he came across Joseph Ryan attacking his wife, Christine Banfield, with a knife on the morning of Feb. 24, 2023. He shot Ryan and then Juliana Magalhães, the au pair, shot him, too.

But officials argued in court that the story was too good to be true, telling jurors that Banfield set Ryan up in a scheme to get rid of his wife. It later came out that Brendan Banfield and Magalhães had been having an affair.

Banfield, 40, shifted slightly and showed little emotion on Monday as the verdict was read in court. He had pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder in the killings of his wife and Ryan, and had taken the stand in his own defense. The jury had deliberated for nearly nine hours across two days before reaching a verdict. Banfield faces the possibility of life in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for May 8.

Brendan Banfield looks on during the double murder trial for Brendan Banfield in Fairfax County Circuit Court, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, in Fairfax, Virginia. Tom Brenner / AP

Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2024 and testified against her former lover at trial. She said they had impersonated Christine Banfield, a pediatric intensive care nurse, on a website for sexual fetishes. She said they used the site to lure Ryan to the house for a sexual encounter involving a knife, staging the scene to look as though they had shot an intruder who was attacking the wife.

Defense attorney John Carroll argued that Magalhães’ testimony could not be trusted because she was cooperating with prosecutors to try to avoid a long prison sentence. In his own testimony, Banfield said that the testimony was “absolutely crazy.”

Carroll also introduced evidence showing that there was dissent within the police department over the theory that Magalhães and Brendan Banfield impersonated Christine Banfield on social media in a “catfishing” scheme. An officer who concluded from digital evidence that Christine Banfield was behind the social media account was later transferred in what Carroll said was punishment for disagreeing with a theory favored by the department’s higher-ups.

In closing arguments, prosecutor Jenna Sands told the jury they did not have to rely solely on Magalhães’ testimony, pointing to what she called a “plethora of evidence.” That included expert testimony that blood stains on Ryan’s hands suggested Christine Banfield’s blood had been dripped onto him from above.

Magalhães was scheduled to be sentenced after Banfield’s trial. Attorneys have said she could be allowed to walk free if she is sentenced to time served.
