President Donald Trump on Monday suggested the Kennedy Center’s [two-year renovation project] could be dramatic — a demolition effort short of a complete teardown, but one so severe that it would leave the Washington building’s steel “fully exposed.”

A source close to the center said Trump has very specific ideas about what he wants to do to the building, and those ideas — which have not been publicly released — don’t align with the building’s current state.

A document reviewed by CNN, which an official said was presented to some appropriators in Congress, contemplates serious changes — including exterior marble and roofing replacements, security and safety improvements, and seating replacement — but does not make explicit that the theater complex could be stripped to its bones.

“I’m not ripping it down. I’ll be using the steel. So we’re using the structure,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“The steel will be all checked out because it’ll be fully exposed,” he said, estimating the project could cost around $200 million.

The planned two-year closure for construction marks Trump’s most dramatic effort yet to [overhaul the center] after he oversaw its cultural transformation last year. Upon returning to the White House, he quickly [gutted its board] and installed loyalists, who [elected him chair] and voted in December to [rename the venue] the “Trump Kennedy Center” — a move that’s being [challenged in court]. But those changes have also led to slumping ticket sales and dwindling performances as prominent artists have [canceled their appearances] — which some saw as driving the desire to temporarily close.

One source familiar with the project said all of the planned renovations were outlined and presented to at least some in Congress as part of the $257 million included in Trump’s domestic agenda law last summer for “necessary expenses for capital repair, restoration, maintenance backlog, and security structures.” (CNN has reached out to the chair of the Senate committee that has jurisdiction over public buildings.)

But some fear another East Wing situation, with Washington one day waking up [to a demolition] beyond anything residents had contemplated.

The source brushed off the president’s Monday comments as typical Trump hyperbole, and an administration official said there are no plans to tear down any buildings.

The center needed significant maintenance when Trump returned to office in early 2025, according a source familiar, including upgrades to the orchestra pit, bathroom renovations and new HVAC systems. Two sources familiar with the project said there were 10 to 15 years of deferred maintenance.

Early into Trump’s second term, the Kennedy Center brought in various experts to discuss potential options for renovations, the first source familiar with the project told CNN, including tearing down the building entirely.

During Trump’s first [tour of the venue] in March, the president asked for options and told officials that he did not want to raze the building but instead wanted to get money from Congress for renovations. Trump made calls to lawmakers on the concept as he traveled back to the White House, and eventually the Kennedy Center was awarded $257 million for operations and renovations.

CNN has reached out to the Kennedy Center for details on the extent of the renovations, including whether any demolition would be required, whether there would be major structural or cosmetic changes, and whether the Reach — an expansion opened in 2019 — will be preserved.

The remodel, a Kennedy Center spokesperson said, “will focus primarily on the deferred maintenance.”

    A surprise announcement

Still, the president’s Truth Social post announcing the renovations came as a surprise to many, including some members of the center’s board, its in-house musicians, members of the National Symphony Orchestra board, and many staffers, according to four sources familiar with the matter. A source who knew about the decision before Trump’s Sunday night announcement said it was kept to a small number of people to prevent it from being leaked to the media.

Trump added in his Truth Social post that the closure would be “totally subject to Board approval,” which is expected to give a rubber stamp given it’s made up of his handpicked allies. One source familiar with the process said there have been no communications with the board about any planned vote since the president’s post, and it’s unclear whether board approval is needed.

Complete closure for two years wasn’t always the idea. One plan — referred to by the first source familiar with the project as a “pardon-the-dust initiative” — would have partially shut down theaters during renovations for about five years. The plan was presented to Trump, at least one subcommittee of the board and the head of building maintenance, and renovations began over the last six months — including marble installations, removal of dead trees and the painting of exterior lights and columns.

But there was strong pushback to this initiative within the organization and from the unions, this source said, particularly over how removing certain elements of the theater would impact patrons and acoustics. Internally, some performers and officials were also concerned about the danger of a perpetual construction site.

Trump vocalized his own objections to the “piecemeal” approach on Monday.

“You can’t do any work because people are coming in and out,” he said in the Oval Office. “We have a marble man over there. The other day he said, ‘You know, every time I put down a piece of marble, people are stepping on the marble. They don’t even have time to dry.’”

Trump went on: “I was thinking maybe there’s a way of doing it simultaneously, but there really isn’t.”

    Financial challenges

The announced closure comes as the Kennedy Center has been struggling to sustain the next year of programming.

There was not enough critical mass for a 2026-2027 programming season, spanning classical music, theater, dance, jazz and family events, a source familiar with center’s programming said. The season begins in the fall with artists usually announced on a rolling basis between February and April. By this time of year, another source familiar with programming said, it should have been largely booked.

But many of the shows and artists who were in discussions and on hold for the next season pulled out, according to the first source familiar with programming. Internally, some were concerned about lack of audiences, infrastructure and marketing, that source noted.

“The artist boycott across all genres was becoming untenable,” the second source said, and appeared to make “it quite impossible for them to produce a series of any significance.”

Some shows ending the 2025-2026 season are already under contract and have been announced publicly. It’s unclear what will happen to those performances, with a scramble to figure it out, according to the second source.

The Kennedy Center did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on its plans for subscription holders and whether they might receive a refund.

Staffers are now bracing for more layoffs, one of the sources said, after massive cuts over the past year under Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell, Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and a close ally.

On Sunday evening, Grenell sent a note to staff with the text of Trump’s social media post and his own brief message.

“We recognize this creates many questions as we plan to temporarily close most of our operations,” he said.

“We will have more information about staffing and operational changes in the coming days.”

CNN’s Dana Bash contributed to this report.

Trump says he’s not planning to rip down Kennedy Center

    February 2, 2026 / 7:57 PM EST / CBS News

As President Trump prepares to shut down the Kennedy Center for renovations, sources told CBS News there has been no discussion of demolishing or gutting the building.

The president told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday he plans to create a “brand new” Kennedy Center using the 55-year-old arts institution’s existing steel and some of its marble, drawing speculation about the extent of the planned two-year renovation project.

Asked by CBS News on Monday if he plans to tear down the building, he said: “I’m not ripping it down. I’ll be using the steel, so we’re using the structure.”

He said his changes will cost about $200 million.

Sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that Mr. Trump has so far not asked for estimates for gutting the building.

The scheduled changes, which will start this summer, include a new roof and replacement of some marble and grout. There will also be necessary renovations to the promenade section of the building that stretches out over the road toward the river, where existing steel will be reused, one of the sources said. One of the two free-standing stages in the grand foyer will likely be removed, and possibly replaced with a bar.

But the building’s basic layout, with the three theaters and the Hall of Nations and the Hall of States, will remain, the sources told CBS News.

In the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said that as a real estate builder, “you want to sit with something for a little while before you decide on what you want to do.” He added: “You know, we sat with it” and discovered “it’s dilapidated” and needs to be fixed.

A White House official said the administration doesn’t need congressional approval to temporarily close the building for renovations.

Congress appropriated about $250 million for building renovations last year.

Mr. Trump announced late Sunday that the Kennedy Center would close for construction for about two years, aiming to address what Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell called “decades of deferred maintenance and repairs.” Mr. Trump argued closing the center “will produce a much faster and higher quality result” than enduring partial closures while the building is renovated.

Since returning to the White House last year, Mr. Trump has sought to put his stamp on D.C.-area landmarks. The real estate developer-turned-president had the White House’s East Wing demolished last fall to make room for a planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom. And he commissioned a triumphal arch across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., saying over the weekend he’d like the arch to be “the biggest one” in the world.

Mr. Trump and his allies have also made sweeping changes to the Kennedy Center. Weeks after his inauguration, the president replaced some members of the center’s board of trustees and made himself chair. Last month, the board voted to change the center’s name to the Trump-Kennedy Center, and Mr. Trump’s name was added to the front of the building, drawing criticism from Democrats who argued the name can’t be changed without an act of Congress.

The center has also faced a series of high-profile cancellations. The Broadway hit “Hamilton” pulled out of planned performances, composer Philip Glass canceled a premiere of his new symphony and several other musical artists called off their shows, in many cases citing either the name change or broader concerns about the center’s political direction.

Grenell has criticized the artists who canceled their appearances, saying they were “booked by the previous far left leadership” and accusing them of politicizing the center.

Clintons agree to testify to House Oversight Committee ahead of expected contempt vote

    February 2, 2026 / 9:19 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Bill and Hillary Clinton agreed to testify in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, ahead of expected votes in the House later this week on holding the pair in contempt of Congress.

In an email to the committee on Monday, the Clintons’ legal team said the former president and former secretary of state “accept the terms of your letter and will appear for depositions on mutually agreeable dates.”

“As has been the Committee’s practice, please confirm the House will not move forward with contempt proceedings, as the Chairman stated in his letter this morning,” said the email, which was obtained by CBS News.

Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who chairs the oversight panel, said in a statement late Monday: “The Clintons’ counsel has said they agree to terms, but those terms lack clarity yet again and they have provided no dates for their depositions. The only reason they have said they agree to terms is because the House has moved forward with contempt. I will clarify the terms they are agreeing to and then discuss next steps with my committee members.”

The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Clintons last year, but the pair called the subpoenas legally invalid and refused to appear before the panel, which is probing the Justice Department’s investigations into Epstein. The committee then recommended holding the Clintons in contempt in January.

Both contempt resolutions advanced out of the House Oversight Committee with bipartisan support, though more Democrats supported the one related to Bill Clinton, who has acknowledged previous interactions with Epstein.

Neither Clinton has been accused of any wrongdoing in the Epstein case.

In an effort to avoid the contempt of Congress votes, lawyers for the Clintons said in a Jan. 31 letter to the committee that the former president would agree to sit for a four-hour transcribed interview if it takes place in New York City and is “confined to matters related to the investigations and prosecutions” of Epstein. The former secretary of state would offer another sworn declaration to answer any questions the committee still has, the lawyers said. If the committee still requires her in-person testimony, her appearance should follow the same terms as her husband’s testimony, they said.

The Clintons’ legal team asked that the subpoenas and contempt resolutions be withdrawn if the conditions were agreed to.

Responding in a letter earlier Monday, Comer said the panel has “serious concerns” about the offer.

Comer argued the proposed scope of Bill Clinton’s testimony was too limited and “would result in your client answering few questions.” The other demands were “not reasonable” and “insufficient,” Comer said. Comer said the terms proposed for Hillary Clinton’s sworn declaration or appearance were also unacceptable.

The news of the Clintons’ offer was first delivered by Democratic Rep. James Walkinshaw of Virginia during Monday night’s House Rules Committee meeting, which was expected to advance the contempt resolutions and tee them up for floor votes in the coming days.

“I understand that the Clintons have agreed to appear for depositions and have agreed to the terms that you laid out in your most recent letter,” Walkinshaw told Comer as they both appeared before the committee.

Comer said he was unaware of the news. The Clintons’ attorney had emailed the committee with the offer while Comer was testifying, according to a committee aide.

Comer left the House Rules Committee, which briefly recessed for floor votes Monday, questioning the Clintons’ agreement.

“There is no offer. They texted us and said they accept our offer. There is no offer,” he told reporters. “What do they accept? … They said they would accept my offer. They sent an offer, and I rejected their offer.”

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said the Clintons have now accepted “every single request” from Republicans on the terms of their testimony and urged Comer to respond with dates for their appearance.

“We’re going to find out right now if Chairman Comer actually wants to hear from the Clintons, or this is all a political, partisan witch hunt by Donald Trump,” Garcia told reporters Monday night.

GOP Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, the chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, said later Monday night that the panel would postpone further consideration of the contempt resolutions until it’s clarified “with the Clintons what they are actually agreeing to.”

“However, should there not be substantial compliance and agreement overnight, the committee will return to continue the hearing on the contempt,” she said.

The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Clintons in August, along with former Justice Department officials dating back to George W. Bush’s administration. Since then, only Bill Barr, who served as attorney general during President Trump’s first term, has provided closed-door testimony to the committee, while the panel has accepted written statements from the others.

Comer has said the committee accepted statements from other former officials because they weren’t photographed with Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, “nor is there any evidence that they were directly involved in the investigation.”

The Clintons have accused Comer of treating them differently than other officials in an attempt to embarrass them and punish Mr. Trump’s political rivals.

The Justice Department released a massive trove of Epstein files last week that include mentions of a number of notable figures, including Bill Clinton and Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump has also not been accused of any wrongdoing as it relates to the Epstein case.

Maryland House OKs new congressional map, but Senate will likely prove a roadblock

Maryland House OKs new congressional map, but Senate will likely prove a roadblock

    Annapolis, Maryland AP—

The Maryland House approved a new congressional map Monday that could enable Democrats to win the state’s only Republican-held US House seat, but leadership in the state Senate has said since October the bill doesn’t have enough support to advance in that chamber — largely due to concerns it could backfire.

The Maryland House pushed forward with unusual mid-decade redistricting at the urging of Democratic Gov. Wes Moore in response to redistricting in other states.

Democrats now hold a 7-1 advantage over Republicans in the state’s US House delegation. The new map would make it easier to defeat Republican Rep. Andy Harris and enable Democrats to win all eight seats.

President Donald Trump launched mid-decade redistricting efforts last summer, when he urged Republican officials in Texas to redraw maps to help the GOP win more seats in hopes of preserving a narrow House majority.

Maryland Democrats spent much of the four-hour debate on Monday criticizing Trump’s presidency. Delegate C.T. Wilson, a Democrat who is the sponsor of the bill containing the map’s new boundaries, said the measure is needed “to help ensure that this administration finally has a Congress that puts his power in check.”

Republicans who oppose the new map focused on how Harris’ district, which is mostly on the state’s largely rural Eastern Shore, would jump over the Chesapeake Bay to include more Democratic voters to help oust Harris.

“It is about nothing except party politics,” Delegate Jason Buckel, a western Maryland Republican who is the House minority leader, said.

But Delegate Marc Korman, a Democrat in the Montgomery County suburbs of the nation’s capital, argued that the district has extended over the bay several times since the 1960s — including once by court order — and five different Republicans still won the seat when it did, including Harris.

Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Baltimore Democrat, has consistently said the redistricting effort aimed at flipping the seat held by Harris could jeopardize at least one seat now held by Democrats.

Ferguson has pointed out that a congressional map adopted in 2021 was ruled unconstitutional by a judge who described it as “a product of extreme partisan gerrymandering.” That map also would have made it easier for a Democrat to defeat Harris. Maryland passed another map in 2022, and the parties dropped their legal fight. Redrawing districts again would prompt new legal challenges and potentially allow a court to impose districts, Ferguson has noted.

Changing the map could be disruptive to the state’s election calendar, as well, due to expected legal challenges, the Senate president has said. Maryland has a February 24 candidate filing deadline and a primary scheduled for June 23.

Ferguson’s opposition to mid-decade redistricting has not changed, his spokesperson, David Schuhlein, said Monday.
