Texas Senate candidate James Talarico’s campaign roiled as he denies referring to ex-rival as ‘mediocre Black man’

With now just a month to go until Election Day, the Democratic primary for US Senate in Texas has become so fraught that a TikToker’s accusations have roiled the race and prompted a major endorsement in the backlash.

The incident started Sunday night when Morgan Thompson posted a video recounting what she says was a comment Texas state Rep. James Talarico made to her in a private conversation in January: that he called his onetime opponent, former US Rep. Colin Allred, a “mediocre Black man.”

Talarico’s campaign released a statement from the candidate on Monday calling Thompson’s claims “a mischaracterization of a private conversation,” going on to explain, “I described Congressman Allred’s method of campaigning as mediocre — but his life and service are not.” Thompson acknowledged that she didn’t have a recording and that they had previously agreed to treat their conversation as off the record.

But the accusation slammed Talarico’s campaign on Monday, sending aides into a flurry and prompting Allred — who dropped out of the Senate race when Rep. Jasmine Crockett decided to make a last-minute entry — to endorse her in the intense race, despite frustrations he had in December that she had chased him out of the race by getting in. It also renewed the questions about identity politics and electability that have riven the primary and the Democratic Party more broadly.

Thompson alleges that Talarico, who is White, said: “I signed up to run against a mediocre Black man, not a formidable, intelligent Black woman.”

Talarico, in his statement denying the exact wording as Thompson relayed it, said, “I understand how my critique of the Congressman’s campaign could be interpreted given this country’s painful legacy of racism, and I care deeply about the impact my words have on others.”

In an interview on Monday evening, Allred told CNN he felt the campaign’s statement is “an admission that he said what he said,” and expressed surprise that he hadn’t heard from Talarico directly.

“I responded not just on my behalf, but on behalf of Black candidates around the country that even if you run six points ahead of your presidential candidate, you’re still called ‘mediocre,’” Allred said, referring to his results in the 2024 Senate race as compared to Kamala Harris in the state. (Allred outperformed Harris by about five points.)

What Talarico is accused of saying

Thompson told CNN that she had been turned on to Talarico’s campaign by a friend last fall and preferred him over Allred. After attending an event of his in Dallas, she started using her social media following to boost him. Talarico’s staff reached out about her video from the rally, she said, and was soon feeding her information like fundraising numbers and clips from his “Jubilee” online debate to help.

“It was like a symbiotic kind of thing. I wasn’t paid by the campaign at all,” Thompson said, though, “I was in constant communication with the campaign.”

Thompson said the relationship started to break down after she got a fundraising text for Talarico, signed by the Democratic strategist James Carville, who has been urging Democrats to start moving away from identity politics. Thompson said she saw that as an implicit critique of Black women, and that when she raised her frustrations with the campaign, an aide offered her to have a conversation with Talarico — either on camera for her to post, or “off the record,” as what was meant to be a private conversation.

She says she opted for the less formal conversation, without a recording. But she says she remembers the exchange, which took place backstage before a town hall in Plano on January 12, very well. Thompson said she raised concerns about the association with Carville and suggested that maybe he was chasing a big name, prompting Talarico to say, “So you’re concerned about me being a sell out?” She said she told him he was overlooking the racial dynamics he’d tipped into, prompting him to say, “I have blind spots.”

Campaign spokesman JT Ennis confirmed the association with Thompson — “the Talarico campaign works with lots of creators in Texas to keep them updated on the campaign,” he said — and that they did speak before the Plano event. But Ennis told CNN Talarico does not recall making either of those statements, and that his version was backed up by an aide whom both said was in the room but was not made available for an interview.

The conversation turned, Thompson said, when she mentioned to Talarico online chatter she was seeing from people wishing he had run for governor instead — an option he had considered before launching the Senate run and was urged to reconsider when Crockett jumped into the race late.

“That is when he said, ‘I signed up to run against a mediocre black man, not a formidable, intelligent Black woman,’” Thompson said, “That is a direct quote.”

Thompson also accused Talarico’s campaign of trying to silence her, claiming that her Instagram account had disappeared and her Threads account had been suspended within minutes of when she posted a video about her claims. Thompson does not know how this would have happened, she acknowledged, given that no one on the campaign has her password, but “It’s just too many factors in play. It’s just too many abnormalities. The timing of it was so fast.”

As for Thompson’s claims about the social media accounts being closed, Ennis said, “No. We do not have that kind of power, nor would we ever do that.”

    How Allred responded

Shortly after Thompson’s video went viral, Allred posted his own video ripping Talarico.

“Let me just give you some free advice, James,” Allred said. “If you want to compliment Black women, just do it. Just do it. Don’t do it while also tearing down a Black man.”

He also suggested Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, was getting unfair attention for his discussion on the campaign trail of Christianity and how Democrats can make inroads with religious voters.

“We don’t need you,” he said. “You’re not saying anything unique. You’re just saying it looking like you do.”

The Senate primary is March 3. Allred is also on the ballot that day, in a House primary against Rep. Julie Johnson that he entered after leaving the Senate race.

Clemson basketball player’s teammates pool money to bring her mom from overseas for surprise visit

    February 2, 2026 / 8:04 PM EST / CBS News

For Rusne Augustinaite, home is more than 5,000 miles away.

The 22-year-old junior guard at Clemson University grew up in Lithuania, far from where she’s become one of the best three-point shooters in the Atlantic Coast Conference. And while she has now spent years playing in the U.S., one person has never seen her play a college game in person: her mom.

Travel costs and work obligations kept her mother, Rasa, at home. That was until Augustinaite’s teammates stepped in to help.

After learning how much she missed her family, the Tigers quietly pooled their own money for an unforgettable surprise.

Video of the sweet moment shows Rasa knocking on the door. Augustinaite answers, looking confused for a moment before realizing her mom was standing in front of her. The two come together for an emotional embrace as teammates cheer on in support.

“I don’t know how it didn’t … slip or someone didn’t text it in the wrong group chat or something,” Augustinaite told CBS News. “But they did a great job, and it’s all because of my teammates, and I’m just so happy to have them.”

The reunion was made even sweeter after what happened during Augustinaite’s next game.

With her mom watching from the stands, she delivered one of the best performances of the year, scoring a season-high 21 points as Clemson defeated Southern Methodist University. After the final buzzer, she got the best victory celebration of all — a post-game hug from mom.

Clintons agree to testify after House threatens contempt in Jeffrey Epstein probe

House Oversight Committee examining what Bill and Hillary Clinton knew about Jeffrey Epstein and associate Ghislaine Maxwell

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify in the House Oversight Committee’s Jeffrey Epstein investigation after lawmakers moved toward holding them in criminal contempt of Congress.

The committee said in a post on X that the Clintons were “trying to dodge contempt by requesting special treatment,” adding that “The Clintons are not above the law.”

Angel Ureña, deputy chief of staff to Bill Clinton, confirmed in a post on X that both Clintons will appear before the panel.

“They negotiated in good faith. You did not,” Ureña wrote. “But the former president and former Secretary of State will be there and look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone.”

The committee is examining what the Clintons may have known about Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, including scrutiny of Hillary Clinton’s role overseeing U.S. efforts to combat international sex trafficking while serving as Secretary of State.

A source familiar sent Fox News Digital text of the email the Clintons’ attorneys sent to the House Oversight Committee confirming they would testify on terms set by Chairman James Comer, R-Ky.

“Please be advised, and please advise the Chairman, that my clients accept the terms of your letter and will appear for depositions on mutually agreeable dates,” the text read. “As has been the Committee’s practice, please confirm the House will not move forward with contempt proceedings, as the Chairman stated in his letter this morning.”

[CLINTON SPOKESMAN LASHES OUT AT COMER OVER EPSTEIN PROBE AS CONTEMPT VOTE NEARS]

Ranking member Robert Garcia said the message amounted to full compliance with the committee’s demands.

“I mean, they sent us and the Republicans affirmation that they’ve accepted every single term that James Comer has asked for, and that they’re willing to come in and testify,” Garcia said.

Comer, however, disputed that characterization, telling Fox News Digital the agreement lacked specificity.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., speaks to the media in the Rayburn House Office Building on July 24, 2025, in Washington, DC.(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

“The Clintons’ counsel has said they agree to terms, but those terms lack clarity yet again, and they have provided no dates for their depositions,” Comer said. “The only reason they have said they agree to terms is because the House has moved forward with contempt. I will clarify the terms they are agreeing to and then discuss next steps with my committee members.”

The Clintons’ change of heart led the House to temporarily pause proceedings on holding them in contempt on Monday night.

The House Rules Committee, the final gatekeeper before most legislation gets a chamber-wide vote, had been preparing to advance the contempt resolutions but abruptly changed course late Monday. It’s not clear when the postponed effort will continue, or if it will.

Democrats on the committee have pointed out that Comer has not pushed to hold others who did not appear in contempt, nor has he made any threats against the DOJ for failing to produce all of its documents on Epstein by a deadline agreed to by Congress late last year. The department has produced a fraction of the documents expected so far.

House GOP majority shrinks to just one vote as Johnson swears in new House Democrat

The House Republican majority just got reduced to a perilously slim one-vote margin thanks to a Democrat’s victory in Texas over the weekend.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., swore in newly minted Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, on Monday evening, bringing the overall House of Representatives margin to 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats.

That means if a bill gets no Democratic support and the House is in full attendance, losing more than one GOP vote will result in a 216-216 tie — meaning it would fail to pass.

DEMOCRATIC TAKEOVER FEARS SOAR AS HOUSE REPUBLICANS CLING TO FRAGILE MAJORITY

Johnson is no stranger to dealing with slim margins and has eked out significant GOP victories while dealing with majorities between two and three seats.

But this is a particularly difficult week for House GOP leaders who are scrambling to end an ongoing partial government shutdown.

The House is expected to vote on a funding compromise hashed out between Senate Democrats and the White House sometime on Tuesday, and Republicans will need nearly everyone in lockstep for the legislation to survive a chamber-wide “rule vote.”

Rule votes are procedural hurdles that traditionally fall along partisan lines.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: HOUSE EXODUS THREATENS JOHNSON’S GRIP ON POWER AS OVER 40 MEMBERS HEAD FOR EXIT

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee was endorsed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus Political Action Committee.(Office of the Harris County Attorney)

Menefee, a former attorney for Houston’s Harris County, won a special congressional election in a left-leaning district in Texas that has been vacant for nearly a year.

He’s replacing the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, who died while in office in March 2025.

The Associated Press reported that Menefee defeated former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, a fellow Democrat, in Saturday’s runoff election to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died last March.

Sylvester, a former longtime state lawmaker, served two terms as Houston mayor before winning election to Congress in 2024 to fill the seat of the late longtime Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

While Texas has redrawn its congressional maps for the 2026 midterms, as part of the high-stakes redistricting battle between President Donald Trump and Republicans versus Democrats, the special election used the state’s current district lines.

The addition of another lawmaker into the House Democrats’ ranks will give Republican leadership in the chamber further headaches.

And House GOP leaders are painfully aware of the politically difficult situation they’re in.

“They’d better be here,” Johnson said of his Republican members last month. “I told everybody, and not in jest, I said, no adventure sports, no risk-taking, take your vitamins. Stay healthy and be here.”

DNI Gabbard put Trump on the phone with FBI agents who searched Fulton County elections office, sources say

    Updated Feb 2, 2026, 9:51 PM ET | PUBLISHED Feb 2, 2026, 7:45 PM ET | CNN Politics

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard put President Donald Trump on the phone with some of the FBI agents who conducted a controversial search of an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, last week, two sources familiar with the call told CNN.

The unusual call — first reported by The New York Times — underscores Trump’s involvement and interest in the probe of alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election. One source said Trump directed Gabbard to go to Atlanta for the search, and Gabbard herself confirmed that in a letter to top Democrats on the House and Senate Intelligence committees Monday.

“My presence was requested by the President and executed under my broad statutory authority to coordinate, integrate, and analyze intelligence related to election security, including counterintelligence (CI), foreign and other malign influence and cybersecurity,” Gabbard wrote. “The FBI’s Intelligence/Counterintelligence divisions are one of the 18 elements that I oversee.”

Gabbard met with the agents the day after the search, sources said, and during the meeting, she called Trump to check in and asked whether he wanted to talk to the agents. The president agreed and gave the agents a brief “pep talk,” one of the sources said, insisting the conversation did not go beyond that.

In her letter, to Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Jim Himes, Gabbard said that while visiting the FBI’s Atlanta field office, she “facilitated a brief phone call for the President to thank the agents personally for their work.”

“He did not ask any questions, nor did he or I issue any directives,” Gabbard wrote. She said her office’s general counsel found her actions to be within her lawful authority, and that Trump “tasked ODNI with taking all appropriate actions under my statutory authorities towards ensuring the integrity of our elections and specifically directed my observance of the execution of the Fulton County search warrant.”

Trump has made no secret of his belief that he won Georgia in 2020 — though he did not — and of his desire for his government to adjust election procedures to police what he sees as rampant fraud. In an interview that aired Monday with Dan Bongino, the former deputy director of the FBI, Trump called on Republicans to “nationalize the voting” as he again falsely claimed errors in past election results. Democratic election officials have been bracing for potential federal government intrusion in the midterms.

“The Republicans should say, we want to take over, we should take over the voting, the voting in at least many, 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” the president said.

“We have states that are so crooked and they’re counting votes. We have states that I won, that show I didn’t win. Now you’re going to see something in Georgia where they were able to get with a court order, the ballots, you’re going to see some interesting things come out,” he added.

The FBI declined to comment on the call and Gabbard’s role in Fulton County. In response to CNN’s request for comment, Gabbard’s office provided her letter to Congress. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Former senior FBI officials told CNN they could think of no precedent for the top US intelligence official interacting directly with FBI agents on a politically charged case like this.

“There is unanimous disgust across current and former” FBI officials about Gabbard’s actions in Fulton County, said one former senior FBI official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to avoid retaliation.

“There is no precedent, no excuse. It’s performative and undermines the rule of law,” the former official said.

At least one current Trump administration official had previously sought to downplay Trump’s involvement and claimed he did not know why Gabbard was at the search. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN’s Dana Bash this weekend that to his knowledge, Trump did not play a role in the Fulton County search.

“I don’t believe he was involved,” Blanche said. “This is a criminal grand jury investigation, and I can’t comment on it beyond what you just said.”

Asked later about comments from Trump suggesting he had knowledge of the case, Blanche responded: “I’m not around when the president’s briefed or not briefed. What I said is that this is a criminal investigation, so it’s a tightly held, as it must be under the law. It’s a grand jury investigation.”

But on Fox News on Monday night, Blanche signaled he had no problem with Trump talking to the FBI agents who were involved.

“The president talks to law enforcement all week long. The fact that he talked with agents working hard doesn’t surprise me and actually I love it. It’s great,” Blanche said.

Gabbard had been spotted on the scene Wednesday after FBI agents executed a search warrant for the Fulton County elections office, near Atlanta, taking 700 boxes of election materials. The search was related to an effort by the Justice Department to seize voting data and search for alleged fraud in the county, a source familiar with the matter told CNN at the time. An official in Fulton County has since announced the county will challenge the legality of the FBI’s search and seizure of 2020 election records.

Blanche told CNN he did not know why Gabbard was present.

“I don’t know why the director was there,” Blanche said Sunday. “She is not part of the grand jury investigation, but she is for sure a key part of our efforts at election integrity and making sure that we have free and fair elections. She’s an expert in that space, and it’s a big part of what she and her team look at every day.”

Gabbard has carved out a lane for herself pursuing Trump’s election integrity priorities in recent months, boosting her standing within the administration and with the president after a rocky start.

It is well known within the administration that Gabbard and John Ratcliffe, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, have had a fraught relationship

“That’s been smoothed over, and they work together fine now, but it’s also why Tulsi has focused her efforts on (election integrity),” a senior White House official told CNN. The official added that it helps give each of the top officials a different lane of focus.

After her Fulton County trip, Gabbard was slated to address a conference of election officials Friday in Washington, DC. Election officials from both parties had hoped someone from the Trump administration would explain what the administration was doing in Fulton County. But Gabbard ultimately did not attend due to what a conference spokesperson said were “scheduling conflicts.”
