Michele Tafoya, a longtime sportscaster and conservative commentator, has officially announced she will run for US Senate in Minnesota, giving the Republican Party a well-known candidate in a state that’s being roiled by the ongoing federal immigration crackdown.

In a video announcing her campaign launch on Wednesday morning, Tafoya said: “For years, I covered the biggest football games in America,” adding that “it taught me about how leadership really works when leaders are prepared and accountable.”

Tafoya also seized on the welfare fraud allegations rippling through her state, arguing that “I see massive government fraud exploding.” She vowed to “clean up the system: fighting corruption, ending the fraud and protecting your tax dollars.”

The new GOP candidate also highlighted other policy priorities, including lowering the cost of living and “keeping female sports for female athletes.”

The broadcaster’s entry jolts an already dynamic contest set off by Democratic Sen. Tina Smith’s retirement announcement last year. Meanwhile, Sen. Amy Klobuchar is weighing whether to launch a run for governor that could further disrupt the state’s political landscape.

Minnesota has been on Republicans’ radar as a place to make inroads ever since President Donald Trump lost the state by less than two points in 2016. He would lose the state by roughly seven points in 2020 and about four points in 2024.

The Trump administration’s deployment of hundreds of immigration and border agents to Minnesota has set off protests across the Twin Cities, with scenes of confrontations between the two sides being shared widely. Tensions between Minnesota’s Democratic leaders and Washington spiked after an immigration officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman who had impeded traffic with her vehicle.

The Justice Department has subpoenaed at least five Minnesota officials as part of a probe into whether the state and local leaders obstructed federal immigration enforcement efforts, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

Tafoya, a veteran NFL broadcaster who has covered sports at several networks over three decades, left broadcasting in 2022 to begin a foray into Republican politics. She now hosts a conservative podcast.

She has been critical of Minnesota leaders who have objected to the immigration crackdown and ripped dozens of protesters who interrupted a Sunday church service because a pastor there appeared to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official.

“In Minnesota, law enforcement has been demonized for years,” Tafoya posted on X recently, responding to a video from Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is running in the Democratic primary for Senate against Rep. Angie Craig. “We are short on officers. Morale has plummeted. Career criminals are released to offend again. And radical leftists care more about them than they do about honest Minnesotans who simply want to see the chaos end.”

Correction:This story has been corrected to reflect that Renee Nicole Good was 37 years old.

Trump set to face a diplomatic intervention on Greenland in Davos

    2026-01-21T00:22:45.444Z / CNN

    Davos, Switzerland—

An urgent diplomatic intervention is awaiting President Donald Trump in Davos after days spent hurling threats at US allies over Greenland.

Top European officials are planning to use this week’s annual summit of global elites as their staging ground for averting a fast-blooming crisis that has put the continent on edge — and may now threaten the survival of its seven-decade alliance with the United States, three people familiar with the discussions told CNN.

That push from allies comes as even some in Trump’s orbit have expressed private misgivings over the president’s rhetoric and have sought an off-ramp.

In the near term, the Europeans’ emergency effort aims to de-escalate tensions following Trump’s vow to slap new tariffs on any ally that opposes his push for “complete and total control” of Greenland. But it’s also about trying to divert the president generally from his campaign for the Danish territory.

Among the paths that Trump advisers and Western diplomats have focused on are expanding existing treaties that allow the US to place military bases and other resources on the island, along with adding commercial and economic agreements. Such an outcome would include some type of signing ceremony that would allow the president to showcase an accomplishment, according to people familiar with the matter.

Another option that has been discussed is placing Greenland under a Compact of Free Association, which would allow it to maintain its current status while still providing the US expanded security access in exchange for financial assistance. Palau, the Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia fall under such an agreement with the US.

There have also been early discussions about suggesting the renegotiation of the 1951 agreement between the US, Denmark and Greenland to clearly state there would be no Chinese investments in Greenland, these people said.

And while Denmark has shown little inclination to giving up its territory, some senior Trump administration officials have worked over the past several weeks on a proposal to purchase the island, these people said.

    Nathan Howard/Reuters

Trump — who arrives in Davos early Wednesday — told reporters before leaving Tuesday that he’ll hold a series of meetings on Greenland while there, predicting he’d strike a deal that’s “very good for everybody.” He claimed NATO would be “very happy” and that Greenlanders, who’ve protested threats of American annexation, will be “thrilled.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who has worked to establish a close relationship with Trump, is among those expected to meet with the president one-on-one on the sidelines of the summit, sources familiar with the plans said.

Yet despite Trump’s sunny projections, he has continued to double down on his divisive demands, insisting again Tuesday that “we need” Greenland. Asked how far he was willing to go to gain control of the Arctic island, Trump said only: “You’ll find out,” before suggesting he could look at alternative options if the US Supreme Court rules against his use of tariffs.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly cast the US’ acquisition of Greenland as a potential boon for NATO, arguing it “becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States, and Greenlanders would be better served if protected by the United States from modern threats in the Arctic region.”

European allies search for ways to push back

But among the US’ closest European allies, there’s still no clear consensus for how to push back should the president intensify his aggression.

“They have to respond,” said Ian Bremmer, the president of global risk assessment firm Eurasia Group. “And there’s lots of things they can do, but they have to be willing to do them with sufficient numbers and force that it makes the difference.”

The standoff set to play out over the next 48 hours underscores the seriousness with which European nations are now viewing Trump’s imperial threats amid his sustained attacks on various global leaders.

Tensions over Greenland have also forced a shift in calculation among some in Europe following a year in which most US allies sought to appease Trump rather than resist him — reasoning that in many cases it was worth acceding to his commands rather than risking direct conflict.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/06-2021-10-14t060412z-793122682-rc2rnp9shkc5-rtrmadp-3-greenland-mining.jpg

Trump has long argued Greenland is critical for US national security and valuable for its vast mineral reserves. But that push hit a new level over the last week with his vow to hit eight European countries with tariffs and his subsequent public missives against the leaders of Norway and France.

The president’s bid to penalize allies economically has prompted alarm across Europe, with officials warning that such a move could fracture the long-standing NATO alliance that encompasses 32 member states across Europe and North America.

During a speech in Davos, French President Emmanuel Macron decried the “endless accumulation of new tariffs that are fundamentally unacceptable — even more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen used her address at the World Economic Forum, meanwhile, to call for building “a new form of European independence.”

“Threatening to impose economic sanctions means it has moved beyond an abstract issue and a diplomatic crisis into a real economic and political crisis,” said Erik Brattberg, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center. “There’s still a desire to avoid further escalation, but they also feel the need to take a stand and put their foot down.”

Within European diplomatic circles, officials have weighed a range of possible responses, beginning with the imposition of €93 billion ($109 billion) of retaliatory tariffs that the European Union postponed after reaching a trade deal with the US last year, the people familiar with the discussions said.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/c-ap26015572037130.jpg

Military vessel HDMS Knud Rasmussen of the Royal Danish Navy patrols near Nuuk, Greenland, on January 15, 2026.

    Evgeniy Maloletka/AP

Yet beyond that initial step, there is far less certainty over how best to deter Trump if he mounts a sustained campaign for Greenland. The nations could seek financial payback by stepping up sales of US treasuries or put additional restrictions on US companies. They could even limit American access to European military bases or pull out of the upcoming World Cup that Trump has frequently touted as a point of personal pride, the people familiar said.

The EU also possesses another set of harsh economic measures designed specifically to punish countries that it determines are trying to coerce the bloc. But wielding that tool — called the Anti-Coercion Instrument — would require a multi-step approval process and is widely seen as a tactic of last resort.

European officials instead are largely hoping Trump will take an off-ramp before it gets to that point.

Among some people around Trump, there’s a belief that he’s posturing — seeing how far he can go to get what he wants — and that there’s no appetite for military intervention. But that’s still sparked concern that Trump’s aggressive efforts could irreparably harm critical relationships.

And even as officials on both sides of the Atlantic push ahead on diplomatic routes, it remains a delicate matter given Trump’s declaration that outright ownership of Greenland is now of “psychological” importance — and a victory he increasingly craves.

“It’s trepidation,” Bremmer said, summing up the mood among European officials girding themselves for Trump’s arrival in Davos. “Nobody knows what he’s going to say — including, maybe, him.”

CNN’s Kristen Holmes and Kylie Atwood contributed to this report.

Correction:This story has been corrected to reflect that the Anti-Coercion Instrument would require a multi-step process. An earlier version of the article incorrectly said it needed unanimous support.

A commission convened by Maryland’s Democratic Gov. Wes Moore recommended a new congressional map Tuesday that targets the state’s lone Republican in the US House.

The proposal, which needs state legislative approval, still faces headwinds in Maryland’s Democratic-controlled state Senate, however.

The commission-backed map takes aim at eight-term Republican Rep. Andy Harris, by adding new Democratic territory – including Maryland’s capital city, Annapolis, and parts of the northern suburbs of Washington, DC – to Harris’ current district in the state’s Eastern Shore.

Moore, considered a potential 2028 White House contender, is pushing Maryland to join Democratic efforts aimed at countering the mid-decade redistricting fight launched last year by President Donald Trump.

Just last week, Democratic lawmakers in neighboring Virginia paved the way for a referendum on a constitutional amendment that could yield their party as many as four additional seats in the House.

Democrats in Maryland outnumber Republicans by a wide margin and currently control both chambers of the state legislature and seven of the state’s eight US House seats.

“At a moment when other states are moving aggressively to redraw maps, and when fundamental voting rights protections face renewed threats, Maryland has a responsibility to lead with urgency,” Maryland Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, a Democrat who chaired Moore’s redistricting commission, said in a statement. “Our goal is to ensure our congressional delegation reflects the will of the people, protects representation for historically underrepresented communities, and gives Marylanders a Congress that can serve as a real check on this President.”

The plan, which the commission voted on during a closed-door meeting Tuesday, still faces fierce opposition from a key Democrat, Maryland state Senate President Bill Ferguson.

Ferguson, who served on the commission, has argued that courts could toss out a map eliminating Republican representation as unconstitutional and that Democrats could lose seats in the end. In a statement Tuesday, he argued that the commission had failed to hear from key stakeholders, including election officials, as they weighed the new congressional districts.

“Ultimately, a flawed process has delivered a flawed product,” he said.

Gunfire echoed through Tehran Tuesday as heavily armed militias were deployed across the Iranian capital, transforming some districts into fortified zones under intense security.

Video footage showed bursts of automatic weapons after dark as government buildings, state media sites and major intersections were reportedly placed under guard, with armored pickups and masked fighters patrolling the streets in Toyotas.

The trucks were mounted with heavy machine guns and were moving in convoys with weapons firing into the darkness as armed men shouted commands.

In the video, large-caliber guns can be heard rattling as vehicles maneuver through urban streets.

“There has been a deployment of dozens of Toyotas mounted with heavy machine guns (DShK) and other heavy weapons in Tehran,” Ali Safavi, a senior official with the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), told Fox News Digital.

“They are reportedly being used by elements linked to Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF),” he said.

“Their commander speaks in Farsi, and these fighters are Iraqi Hashd al-Sha’bi, Popular Mobilization Force and Hezbollah fighters who have joined the IRGC. The IRGC are their commanders, and you can hear them shouting in Farsi.”

According to Safavi, the Iranian regime has increasingly relied on foreign proxy forces to maintain control of the capital.

“The regime has brought in at least 5,000 foreign elements now from Iraq and Hezbollah to control Tehran,” he explained.

“They are guarding the government buildings and the state radio and TV and are using heavy machine guns, which are Russian-made and 50 caliber.”

Safavi added that “at night, there are fierce clashes that are ongoing as well as running street battles between the protesters and the special unit forces.”

The footage emerged as the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported what it described as Day 24 of nationwide protests marked by a continued communications blackout.

“The number of confirmed deaths has reached 4,519, while the number of deaths still under investigation stands at 9,049,” the agency said, adding that at least 5,811 people have been seriously injured and 26,314 arrested.

HRANA reports also described an overwhelming security presence, particularly with law enforcement, the IRGC, Basij units and plainclothes agents after nightfall, creating what the group called an atmosphere of deterrence and fear.

The first protests began Dec. 28 and rapidly spread nationwide, driven by economic grievances and opposition to clerical rule.

Demonstrations have persisted despite mass arrests, lethal force and internet shutdowns.

“Sometimes the protesters hold their ground to the gunfire, ammunition and volleys of tear gas,” Safavi said.

He alleged that IRGC units attacked a hospital in Gorgan, killing wounded patients, stationing snipers on rooftops and firing into surrounding areas.

“They then took around 76 bodies to a warehouse and are refusing to hand them over to families because the forces want to bury them in secret,” he claimed.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has repeatedly blamed foreign enemies for unrest while backing the IRGC’s response.

President Trump on Tuesday warned Iran that continued assassination threats from leaders in Tehran would trigger overwhelming retaliation.

“Anything ever happens, we’re going to blow the whole — the whole country’s going to get blown up,” Trump told NewsNation.

NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi rejected the notion that external military action could topple the regime.

“A foreign war cannot bring down this regime,” she said in a statement. “What is required is an organized nationwide resistance rooted in active, combat-ready forces inside Iran’s cities to defeat one of the most brutal and repressive apparatuses in the world today — the IRGC.”
