Iran war shows “era of fossil fuel security is over,” says U.K. official, defying Trump calls for North Sea drilling

    April 21, 2026 / 11:54 AM EDT / CBS News

Britain is doubling down on its commitment to net-zero emissions targets in light of energy volatility caused by the U.S.-Iran war, the government announced Tuesday, in spite of President Trump’s insistence that they should drill for North Sea oil.

“As we face the second fossil fuel shock in less than 5 years, the lesson for our country is clear,” said U.K. energy secretary Ed Miliband, referring to energy price spikes resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ongoing U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran. “The era of fossil fuel security is over, and the era of clean energy security must come of age.”

In a statement explaining the British government’s raft of new policies to “break the link” between volatile global gas prices and the price of electricity for Brits, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “We need to get off the fossil fuel rollercoaster.”

U.K. energy prices have skyrocketed since the war on Iran began, prompting calls from opposition parties on the right to reverse a 2025 ban on drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea.

Mr. Trump has thrown his weight behind that argument, posting on Truth Social last Tuesday that the U.K. should “DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! It is absolutely crazy that they don’t.”

“Europe is desperate for Energy, and yet the United Kingdom refuses to open North Sea Oil, one of the greatest fields in the World. Tragic!!”

“AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!” he added, a reference to wind turbines, which he has long opposed.

The North Sea is a “mature basin,” which means much of its natural resources have already been extracted – around 90%, according to the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, a nonprofit.

Analysts say that if production were to begin again, the oil would not immediately materialize, as it takes years to find the oil, build a new oil field and start production.

Oil prices dropped Friday as rumors spread that the Strait of Hormuz was to be reopened, but those hopes were dashed over the weekend. Market uncertainty continues with the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran due to soon expire.

Voting rights groups sue over US demand for state voter rolls

    • Summary
    • Lawsuit seeks deletion of voter data already obtained by Justice Department
    • Eighteen states have complied or plan to comply with DOJ voter roll requests
    • Plaintiffs argue DOJ’s methods could disenfranchise eligible voters

April 21 (Reuters) – Voting rights activists accused the Trump administration in a lawsuit on Tuesday of laying the groundwork for voter purges that ‌could illegally remove eligible voters ahead of tightly contested U.S. midterm elections in November.

The lawsuit asks a Washington, D.C., federal judge to bar the Department of Justice from accessing or using states’ lists of registered voters and to delete data it had already obtained.

It was filed by lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the Protect Democracy Project.

REPUBLICANS IN BATTLE TO RETAIN CONTROL OF CONGRESS

The lawsuit challenges President Donald Trump’s effort to expand the government’s role in elections ahead of midterms when his Republican Party is locked in a tight battle to maintain control of both houses of Congress.

The U.S. Constitution says elections must be administered by individual states, and 18 states have already agreed, or signaled plans, to share voter data with the department.

Critics say Republicans’ push to control voter rolls is driven less by election security than by false fraud claims and an effort to gain political advantage by narrowing the electorate, risking the disenfranchisement of eligible, often Democratic‑leaning, voters.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

“The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an illegal and unprecedented quest to stockpile millions of Americans’ confidential voter data,” the complaint reads, alleging the agency was building “a sprawling new voter surveillance ‌and purging apparatus” without congressional authorization.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Its lawyers have said the agency has authority to ensure states are doing enough to keep ineligible people off the rolls.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SUES DOZENS OF STATES

Beginning last year, the Justice Department asked states to provide unredacted copies of their voter rolls, including drivers’ license numbers and partial Social Security numbers.

In an interview with Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” program, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said that the department had reviewed 60 million voter records so far and found the names of 350,000 dead persons and 25,000 people who lacked proof of citizenship.

Dhillon, who leads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, did not provide any evidence that votes were cast for those names.

The Justice Department has sued 30 states which have resisted handing over their rolls, as well as Washington, D.C. Federal judges in five states have dismissed those lawsuits, finding the department failed to justify its demands.

Tuesday’s lawsuit is separate from those cases.

The new lawsuit argues DOJ plans to use the data to direct states to remove voters based on flawed verification methods, risking “false positives” that would wrongly purge eligible citizens.

Trump consumer finance watchdog ends key civil rights-era anti-discrimination protection

WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) – The U.S. federal consumer finance watchdog agency on Tuesday formally ended certain civil-rights-era antidiscrimination requirements for ‌the lending industry, according to a notice in the federal register.

The change from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau made good on a directive from President Donald Trump to curtail long-standing policies he views as a burden on businesses, but that advocates say are fundamental to protecting the rights of American consumers.

Federal regulations no longer require that, under the 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act, lenders prevent policies and practices with unintentionally discriminatory results for borrowers, known as “disparate impacts.” Prohibitions against explicit and intentional discrimination remain in place.

Curbing disparate-impact liability, which is common in employment-related cases, removes a tool the ‌government has used for decades to police racial and gender discrimination in housing, education, lending and other areas.

The change finalized by the CFPB raises the possibility of legal challenges from consumer rights organizations who have denounced the change.

Disparate impact legal doctrine is rooted in Supreme Court precedent. However, the White House has argued that the doctrine undermines equal opportunity, and that it hinders businesses from making hiring and other employment decisions based on merit and skill.

Ceasing to enforce disparate-impact requirements will make preventing discrimination in large sectors of the economy much harder, consumer advocates say.

(CBS News)

    By Kelsie Hoffman

“CBS Mornings” exclusively revealed Pennsylvania high school teacher Leon Smith as the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, which is selected by the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year program.

Smith, a social studies teacher at Haverford High School in Havertown, Pennsylvania, said the honor “just means everything.”

“It’s just such an honor to be able to represent teachers all over the country and really stand on the shoulders of so many others that have come before me that have done just such great work,” Smith said in an interview with “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday.

Smith, who teaches AP U.S. history and AP African American studies, was previously named the 2025 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.

In a video, students at Haverford High School and colleagues described Smith as passionate, caring, charismatic and engaging.

“He is everything you want in a teacher,” principal Pete Donaghy said in the video. “He relates African American studies or U.S. history to his students.”

Smith reflected on the difference teachers can make in the lives of their students. For him, his favorite teacher was his first grade teacher, Ms. Mason.

“Just how she made me feel,” Smith said. “So I just think that’s the power of a teacher, that it’s not always the content but it’s how you make the students feel is what they remember.”

Smith said he thinks it’s crucial to let students “know that you care.”

“And also just being able to see things in students that they cannot see in themselves.”

Smith is also a longtime basketball coach, coaching the freshman team at Haverford High School.

“I was one of his players and he made sure that I felt seen,” a former player told “CBS Mornings.” “He made me feel like I actually had a purpose.”

Smith’s love for basketball started when he was young. His favorite player ever is Julius Erving, known as Dr. J., who Smith said made him “fall in love” with the game.

Erving surprised Smith on “CBS Mornings” by congratulating him in person on being named the National Teacher of the Year.

“When I got the notification about Leon, I realized that his school Haverford is literally right around the corner from a house that I lived in for 11 years,” Erving said. “So there was a connection …I said, ‘Well, let’s go and be on the show. Go see some people. Spread some joy. Spread some love.’”

Erving recalled a teacher who had an impact on his life.

“The most significant was Mr. Ray Wilson, who actually taught special ed in my high school, but he was also my basketball coach,” Erving said, describing Wilson as a lifelong mentor.

“He lived until he was in his 80s, and he was always there. He was always my first call anytime anything came up. Big or small, I could always call him, anytime, day or night. That was special.”

Smith called meeting Erving an honor and said he’s thankful for a moment that he’ll never forget.

NATO deploys armed fighter jets to intercept Russian military planes flying over Baltic Sea

    April 21, 2026 / 10:58 AM EDT / CBS/AP

NATO intercepted Russian strategic bombers and fighter jets that flew over the Baltic Sea on Monday, a muscular display of air power on the alliance’s eastern flank away from the spotlight on the Middle East.

French Rafale fighters were deployed from a Lithuanian air base where they are stationed as part of a decades-long NATO air-policing effort. The fighters armed with air-to-air missiles joined jets from Sweden, Finland, Poland, Denmark and Romania. They all took to the skies to inspect and keep watch on the Russian flight, the French detachment said.

The Russian mission included two supersonic Tu-22M3s, as well as about 10 fighters — both SU-30s and SU-35s — that took turns escorting the larger strategic bombers, according to the statement.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the long-range bombers’ flight was scheduled and occurred in airspace over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. The flight took more than four hours, the ministry said Monday on Telegram.

“At certain stages of the route, the long-range bombers were accompanied by fighters of foreign states,” the ministry said. “Crews of long-range aviation regularly conduct flights over the neutral waters of the Arctic, the North Atlantic, the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Baltic and Black Seas. All flights of Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft are carried out in strict compliance with international rules for the use of airspace.”

In this photo provided by the French Army on April 20, 2026, a Russian supersonic Tu-22M3 strategic bomber, right, and an escorting Su-35 Russian fighter jet fly over the Baltic Sea. AP

The ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. It often reports flights by its strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea, including in January — when NATO jets also flew up to meet them — and at least four times last year.

NATO’s Allied Air Command also did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

The military alliance routinely scrambles fighter aircraft to intercept Russian warplanes that approach or fly near NATO airspace. NATO says the Russian planes it intercepts often fail to use their transponders and don’t communicate with air traffic controllers or file a flight plan. NATO jets are sent up to identify them.

Many of the Russian flights that NATO monitors with its Baltic air policing mission — in place since Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined the alliance in 2004 — are to and from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Even before the war in Ukraine, NATO was intercepting Russian planes around 300 times each year, mostly over waters around northern Europe.

A journalist from The Associated Press witnessed the French detachment’s response on Monday from the sprawling Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania. NATO uses the base for fighter patrols that police the skies on the alliance’s eastern flank.

Two French Rafale fighter jets’ two-man crews — a pilot and a navigator — were seen racing in two vans to the planes’ hangars from the headquarters building the French detachment uses during its four-month deployment on the air base.

The crews were already suited up because they’d been on standby, so they would be ready to take to the air within minutes if scrambled.

The two crews quickly took their places in their planes’ cockpits. They were then put on hold, with the planes’ jet engines ignited, until they got the order to take off. Then they taxied out of their hangars and roared off into the clear skies.

Monday’s flight was the latest in Russia’s maneuvers over — and under — the Baltic Sea. Over the last few years, there have been several incidents of alleged Russian sabotage of underwater cables in the sea.

Lithuania’s defense ministry said NATO jets were scrambled four times from April 13-19 to intercept Russian aircraft that violated flight rules that included turning off flight transponders and flying without a flight plan.

In April 2025, two Swedish fighter jets under NATO command were scrambled over the Baltic Sea to escort away a Russian reconnaissance plane that was approaching Polish airspace. That same month, Britain said it had dispatched two of its fighter jets to intercept a Russian IL-20 Coot reconnaissance plane, and two days later, the jets intercepted an unknown aircraft leaving Kaliningrad air space.

U.S. and Russian aircraft have had close calls in the region over the years. In 2018, a Russian fighter jet intercepted a U.S. Navy spy plane over international airspace above the Baltic Sea in what the European Command is describing as a safe intercept — even though the aircraft came within 20 feet of each other. In 2017, an armed Russian jet came within five feet of a U.S. reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea.
