What to know about the Trump Justice Department’s case against the Southern Poverty Law Center

The Justice Department announced charges Tuesday against the Southern Poverty Law Center, alleging the storied civil rights organization defrauded its donors by funding the extremism it claimed to be fighting.

The fraudulent scheme played out over nearly 10 years, prosecutors allege, when the Southern Poverty Law Center used more than $3 million in donor funds to secretly pay leaders of violent extremist groups to act as confidential informants without disclosing where that money was going.

The 14-page indictment, however, offered few details of how donor money that paid the informants was used to further the groups’ violent interests, or if donors felt blindsided by what their money was spent on – a glaring omission that legal experts say could spell trouble for prosecutors as they seek to secure a conviction.

The case comes several months after FBI Director Kash Patel severed the bureau’s ties with the SPLC after conservative criticism of the group intensified in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination last year. SPLC had long provided its research on hate crimes and extremism to the government, but Patel labeled it a “partisan smear machine” for the attention it paid to a political group founded by Kirk.

SPLC this week said in a statement that it “will vigorously defend ourselves, our staff, and our work” against the “false allegations,” and said that their informant program saved lives over the years.

    Use of informants

The Southern Poverty Law Center began its practice of using paid informants in the 1980s, the indictment says. The center says its program was kept a secret to protect the informants as they infiltrated dangerous organizations like the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Nation and other neo-Nazi groups.

“When we began working with informants, we were living in the shadow of the height of the Civil Rights Movement, which had seen bombings at churches, state-sponsored violence against demonstrators, and the murders of activists that went unanswered by the justice system,” SPLC interim President and CEO Bryan Fair said in a statement Wednesday.

“There is no question that what we learned from informants saved lives,” Fair said, while noting the practice has since been discontinued.

Justice Department prosecutors first started probing the center’s use of paid informants under the Biden administration, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a press conference Tuesday, but decided not to bring charges. The investigation was reopened during Trump’s second term, Blanche said, though he declined to share any reasoning as to why.

    The allegations

The indictment accuses the center of making false statements to a bank so that it could create accounts through which it secretly sent donated money to informants. The accounts were created under fake business names, such as “Tech Writers Group” and “Rare Books Warehouse.”

Blanche said Tuesday that the center is “required to – under the laws associated with a nonprofit – to have certain transparency and honesty in what they’re telling donors they’re going to spend money on and what their mission statement is and what they’re raising money doing.”

Prosecutors further allege that some of the money was used by extremists to commit other crimes, but the indictment does not include any specific instances of that occurring.

It does, however, give details about eight unnamed informants whom the center paid through the shell bank accounts. One informant, a member of a neo-Nazi group called the National Alliance, was allegedly paid more than $1 million over 10 years.

    A risky case

Legal experts told CNN the case is likely to face a number of major hurdles given that the theory under which it’s premised runs counter to the reality of the SPLC’s stated objectives over the years.

Because the organization has long made public its mission of dismantling extremist groups, it’s “preposterous” for the government to argue that any donor who’s given money to SPLC didn’t know what those funds were being used for and didn’t support their money being used to pay informants, said retired federal Judge Nancy Gertner.

“Everyone understood the way they function and why they function and how that was part of the mission,” Gertner said. “So it is a curious indictment.”

Gertner predicted that should the case get to trial, prosecutors may struggle to find witnesses to testify against the SPLC.

“I think it’s going to fall apart because I think there will be no witnesses to support what they’re saying,” she said, adding that the case could also suffer setbacks before trial if the group can convince the judge overseeing it that the organization is being unfairly prosecuted.

Such requests to dismiss a case based on claims of a selective or vindictive prosecution are rarely granted, but judges have appeared more receptive to them since Trump returned to the White House last year. Gertner said SPLC may point to the administration’s antagonization of the group as evidence that it’s being singled out for criminal punishment.

Abbe Smith, a professor at Georgetown Law who specializes in criminal matters, also said that SPLC may try to get the charges tossed out based on an argument that the case runs up against the group’s First Amendment rights.

“The activities that Southern Poverty Law Center are engaging in are basically speech and association,” she said.

The case, which was brought in Montgomery, Alabama, is being overseen by US District Judge Emily Marks, who was appointed to the bench by Trump. Initial proceedings have not yet been scheduled.

    Contentious relationship with Republicans

Some observers have also raised concerns that the case was borne out of the Trump administration’s desire to use the Justice Department to silence its critics.

For years, the Southern Poverty Law Center has faced accusations from Republicans who say it has unfairly maligned conservative organizations and individuals as extremists.

The center has been outwardly critical of the Trump administration’s policies on immigration, voting restrictions, education and other social issues. It has supported several lawsuits against the administration and GOP lawmakers across the country.

Allegations of anti-conservative bias intensified in the wake of Kirk’s death last year, as the SPLC had described Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, in a report as “A Case Study of the Hard Right in 2024.”

Patel quickly broke ties with the SPLC in October, arguing, without evidence, that its research “has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence.”

“That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership,” Patel said in a post on X.

After the charges were unveiled Tuesday, several prominent civil rights group rushed to SPLC’s defense, saying the case is the latest example of the Justice Department fulfilling Trump’s desire to use its powers to exact revenge on political adversaries.

“This administration’s continued weaponization of the Justice Department to target organizations speaking out against its agenda is anti-American behavior harkening back to the McCarthy era,” said American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony Romero.

NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson, meanwhile, warned that “every organization and individual engaged in social justice should be alarmed.”

But others said the fact that the federal probe into SPLC dated back several years showed that it wasn’t improperly brought by prosecutors.

“Given the complexity of this case and that it appears to be a multi-year investigation, I don’t think we can conclude that this case is on the radar screen of retribution” said Gene Rossi, a former federal prosecutor in Virginia. “The allegations are very serious.”

CNN’s Casey Gannon contributed to this report.

(CBS News)

    image

AI is fueling a massive surge in crypto fraud schemes, IRS investigators say

    2026-04-23T06:00:00-0400 / CBS News

Kyle Holder’s entire life savings were stolen from her by sophisticated scammers who used artificial intelligence to perfectly manipulate her. Her $300,000 in retirement and savings accounts, saved over decades, disappeared into the cryptocurrency universe in under three months.

Holder was one of thousands of Americans swindled out of a total estimated at $20 billion by way of cyber theft in 2025, according to the FBI. More than half of those funds were in cryptocurrency.

The first message came in around Christmas 2024 via WhatsApp, a popular messaging app that Holder used to communicate with family and friends in the United States, Canada and Israel. The message offered coaching on how to invest in the crypto market.

Holder, 73, had been an occupational therapist, but an injury made that untenable, so she was intrigued by the idea of investing from home.

“I just thought maybe this was a way that I could use my time, start something new and make money, to carry me into my older years,” she told CBS News on a park bench near the assisted living facility she’s had to move into, paid for by Medicaid.

Holder says she replied to the message asking for more information. Someone who called herself Niamh responded, and started asking about her life.

    The anatomy of the scam

Holder recalled thinking she and Niamh had become friends. “She said she’s a single parent and I thought I’m a single parent. She was always asking about me. And then she would say, ‘Is the money being transferred?’”

Kyle Holder exchanged messages with a scammer who went by the name Niamh, and eventually lost all her savings to a crypto fraud scheme. Kyle Holder

“Honey, how did you sleep last night?” Niamh sent her via WhatsApp early on in the scam. “Any plans for the day?… By the way, honey, have your funds arrived in your Citibank account?”

Niamh and another scammer, who was called a member of the “customer service team,” coached Holder how to open two crypto wallets online. She then transferred a small sum to a crypto account tied to the scammer and thousands of dollars showed up in her crypto wallet.

Niamh assured Holder that the team she worked with would pay taxes on the funds they earned together. Holder thought she’d found a legitimate investment opportunity.

Next Niamh asked for help. “I hope you can understand the plight of being a single mom because the money I lent you includes child support for my daughter Alice and even some of the funds obtained through loans,” Niamh wrote.

Holder transferred more from her crypto wallets, eventually sending almost $300,000 to 14 different wallets tied to the scammers.

Two months into communicating with Niamh, not seeing any money flowing back into her crypto wallets, Holder became worried.

“‘Please assure me this is not a scam,’ I actually said that to her. I’m getting worried,” Holder told CBS News.

Niamh told her she’d sent money to the wrong crypto wallet.

“Oh my goodness, honey, how could you make such a little mistake? This is very bad. Contact customer service to consult on how to solve this problem,” Niamh wrote to her.

That’s when the WhatsApp messages became intimidating.

“You have made a fatal mistake,” Niamh wrote in a message two months into their communication.

Holder said she no longer wanted to live when she realized what had happened — that all of her hard-earned savings were gone.

She had trouble getting out of bed for weeks. Social services were called in to check on her and eventually police took her to a local hospital. Social workers arranged for Medicaid to pay for her to move to an assisted living facility on Long Island, where she now shares a small room with another woman.

“I wanted to have something to leave to my children but there’s nothing left,” she said.

AI tools help criminals target victims

Her case was referred to the IRS Criminal Investigation New York Field Office, where special agents mapped out the scam.

Investigators found cyber criminals had transferred cryptocurrency from the 14 wallets to which Holder sent money into five new wallets to make it harder for anyone to trace.

“From these five wallets it makes its way to an exchange, which is the off-ramp,” said Harry Chavis, the special agent in charge.

This diagram from IRS Criminal Investigation’s New York Field Office shows how a victim’s funds from two crypto wallets are moved and mixed with funds from other victims, then funneled through a crypto exchange to the scammer, making the money incredibly difficult to trace. IRS Criminal Investigation’s New York Field Office

Chavis noted that the scammers likely used tools readily available on the dark web that enable targeting victims even more effectively.

“You could go here and they would sell potential lists of people who were prior victims. There’s other data that has been scraped or pulled through hacks or leaks that can be sold for criminals to obtain. And then they’re using these dark AI tools to write scripts to literally go specifically to the victim,” Chavis told CBS News.

CBS News is not naming the dark web sites that provide AI tools for scammers.

Holder’s money was consolidated with other victims’ money and eventually the criminals off-ramped more than $5 million in cryptocurrency without being caught.

“While she may have contributed a couple hundred thousand dollars to this scam, they were able to ultimately see millions of dollars accumulating in this final wallet,” Chavis said.

The IRS Criminal Division has recently set up an online tipline for cases like Holder’s.

“Do not be ashamed. These are highly sophisticated scams and anyone can be a victim,” Chavis said.

To avoid these types of scams, Chavis said, the most important thing to do in these moments is slow down and take a step back.

“Oftentimes, if you feel like you’re getting a communication from an entity, verify with that entity that they’re actually communicating with you before you just click or take the bait of what’s coming in that communication,” Chavis said, adding, “Oftentimes that urgency to just click something without double-checking, then you’re one step too late. It’s already been done.”

Investigators say the sooner victims report, the better chance they have of identifying the perpetrators.

Chavis’s team of special agents has been trying to identify other victims of the scam that hooked Holder. They have not been able to identify the perpetrators.

“They could be anywhere in the world,” Chavis said.

Exclusive: Trump poised to expand refugee program for white South Africans

    • Summary
    • US officials have discussed expanding the existing 7,500-person refugee cap by 10,000
    • State Department spokesperson declines to confirm or deny discussions
    • Some South African refugees have returned home from US, email shows

WASHINGTON, April 23 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration is considering more than doubling an annual refugee limit to bring more white South Africans into the U.S., according to three people familiar with the matter.

Trump, a Republican, paused refugee admissions from around the world when he took office in January 2025. Weeks later, he issued an ‌executive order prioritizing the resettlement of European-descended Afrikaners, saying they faced race-based persecution in majority-Black South Africa. South Africa’s government vehemently denies the claims.

The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program was formally established in 1980 after hundreds of thousands of people fled wars in Vietnam and Cambodia. The program expanded to provide safe haven to persecuted people around the globe. Trump has used it almost exclusively to bring white South Africans into the U.S., part of a broader upending of norms around humanitarian protection, opens new tab.

In recent weeks, U.S. officials have discussed expanding the 7,500-person refugee cap by 10,000 to allow more South Africans of Afrikaner ethnicity to obtain refugee status, said people familiar with internal planning, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share non-public government discussions.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

The White House referred questions to the U.S. State Department. A State Department spokesperson did not confirm or deny the discussions around expanding the refugee admissions ceiling.

“If the president decides to raise the FY 2026 refugee admissions cap, he will do so at the appropriate time, and any numbers discussed at this point are only speculation,” the spokesperson said.

During the apartheid era, which ended with the first democratic elections in 1994, South Africa maintained a racially segregated society with separate schools, neighborhoods and public facilities for people classified as Black, colored, white or Asian.

Blacks make up 81% of South Africa’s population, according to 2022 census data. Afrikaners and other white South Africans constitute 7% of the population.

The U.S. admitted about 4,500 South Africans as refugees through the first six months of the fiscal year, State Department figures show, on pace to exceed Trump’s existing limits for the program. The only refugees other than white South Africans to enter this fiscal year were three Afghans, according to State Department statistics.

Trump set the record-low refugee ceiling of 7,500 for fiscal year 2026, which began October 1, 2025, down from a ceiling of 125,000 a year under former President Joe ‌Biden.

The Trump administration is also discussing bringing in refugees of other nationalities, one of the people familiar with planning said.

U.S. officials are weighing whether religious minorities from Iran and countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union could be included under what’s known as the “Lautenberg” program, the person said. The program stems from a 1989 budget amendment introduced by then-U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg that aimed to make it easier for Jewish refugees to resettle in the U.S.

SOME SOUTH AFRICANS IN THE US DECIDE TO GO BACK HOME

Even as Trump looks to further ramp up the entry of South Africans, an internal U.S. government email reviewed by Reuters showed that at least four refugees already in the U.S. have returned to South Africa.

One South African who arrived in Minneapolis in late January departed the U.S. less than a month later, the email showed. Case notes said that plans for his daughter and grandchildren to join him “fell through” so he returned to his home country.

A pair of South Africans who arrived in Twin Falls, Idaho, in late January via the refugee program turned around a week later, saying a parent was ill in South Africa, the email showed.

Another South African resettled in Moline, Illinois, in mid-March returned home weeks later, the email said.

“Resettlement occurred quickly, she had not thoroughly thought through the process, and her family in South Africa has decided not to continue their own resettlement process,” case notes said. “Additionally, the client’s age (66) and ability to provide for herself is a concern.”

Trump has portrayed South Africa as dangerous and oppressive for whites, yet thousands of white South Africans abroad have returned to the country in recent years, Reuters reported in March.

U.S. government contracting documents reported by Reuters in February said the U.S. aimed to process 4,500 white South Africans per month through the refugee program. The documents also said the State Department paid to install more than a dozen trailers on embassy property in Pretoria to conduct interviews.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said in a Wednesday post on X that he expects that the U.S. blockade against Iran “could become global soon.”

The long-serving lawmaker noted that he had spoken to President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday morning.

“I had a very good call this morning with @POTUS and @SecWar Pete Hegseth about the way forward regarding the Iran conflict. I think the President’s decision to leave the blockade in place is very smart. It is having a strong effect on the ability of Iran to continue to be the largest state sponsor of terrorism – which they appear intent on doing. I not only expect this blockade to stay in place until Iran shows a commitment to change their ways, I expect the blockade will be growing and that it could become global soon,” Graham said in the post.

Well done to President Trump and his team. This is the best chance since 1979 to change the behavior of the regime and I hope this can be accomplished through diplomacy,” the senator added.
