Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to appear for House Epstein probe, Comer says

Chairman James Comer announced Lutnick’s testimony on Tuesday

Trump administration Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will appear voluntarily before the House Oversight Committee for its probe into Jeffrey Epstein.

Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., confirmed Lutnick’s appearance in a statement sent to Fox News Digital and other outlets on Tuesday.

“Secretary Lutnick has proactively agreed to appear voluntarily before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,” Comer said. “I commend his demonstrated commitment to transparency and appreciate his willingness to engage with the Committee. I look forward to his testimony.”

Lutnick is one of several high-profile people in business, entertainment and politics whose name has come up in the trove of Epstein files being released by the federal government.

Recently released photos showing him with Epstein have also served to heap scrutiny on the businessman-turned-Trump administration official, though Lutnick has denied any improper ties related to Epstein.

The White House also defended Lutnick when asked about his upcoming appearance.

“Secretary Lutnick continues to be a critical asset for President Trump, having played a key role in securing major trade and investment deals. The entire Trump administration, including Secretary Lutnick, remains focused on delivering more wins for the American people,” White House spokesman Kush Desai told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital also reached out to the Commerce Department for comment.

Speculation around Lutnick’s Epstein ties took center stage last week when former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared before the panel under subpoena for their own sworn depositions.

Unlike them, Lutnick was not subpoenaed and is appearing voluntarily.

Bill Clinton told the Oversight Committee he did not “remember ever having any conversation with him about Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell.”

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton got into a heated back-and-forth with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., over her own relationship with Lutnick.

Mace had asked Clinton about her relationship with Lutnick. The former secretary of state insisted her relationship with him went as far as recovery efforts from the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, when she had been a senator from New York and Lutnick was a businessman who lost hundreds of employees when planes hit the World Trade Center.

Mace suggested on X earlier on Tuesday that she would have moved to have Lutnick subpoenaed by the committee, shortly before Comer’s statement came out.

Howard Lutnick, Commerce secretary, agrees to interview with House committee in Epstein probe

    Updated on: March 3, 2026 / 3:53 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has agreed to answer questions from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee as part of its investigation into the government’s handling of the case against convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the committee confirmed Tuesday.

“Secretary Lutnick has proactively agreed to appear voluntarily before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,” Rep. James Comer, who chairs the Oversight Committee said in a statement. “I commend his demonstrated commitment to transparency and appreciate his willingness to engage with the Committee. I look forward to his testimony.”

The committee has not yet announced a date for the interview.

Lutnick is among a slew of powerful people who were revealed to have been in Epstein’s orbit after the Justice Departmentreleased more than 3 million pages of records stemming from its investigation into Epstein in late January.

Lutnick had said he cut off contact with Epstein in 2005, three years before the disgraced financier agreed to plead guilty to state prostitution charges in Florida. But emails showed that in 2012, Lutnick, his wife, Allison, and their children planned a visit to Little St. James, the private island that Epstein owned.

During testimony before Congress last month, Lutnick was pressed about his relationship to Epstein and acknowledged visiting the island. Still, he said he “barely had anything to do with that person.”

“We had lunch on the island, that is true, for an hour. Then we left with all of my children, with my nannies and my wife all together,” Lutnick said. “We were on family vacation. We were not apart. To suggest there was anything untoward about that in 2012, I don’t recall why we did it. But we did.”

Epstein and Lutnick were also neighbors in New York City, and documents released by the Justice Departmentshowed the two were in business togetheras recently as 2014 over their shared dealings in advertising company called Adfin, which has since shuttered.

Epstein and Lutnick, along with three other men, were also seen in anundated photo togetherthat appears to have been taken on Epstein’s island.

The duo exchanged emailsabout the firm in 2018 and also discussed a planned museum expansion plan that year, according to the communications released by the government.

Epstein was arrested and charged with federal sex-trafficking charges in July 2019. He died by suicide at a Manhattan correctional facility while awaiting trial.

    Washington and Erbil, Iraq—

The CIA is working to arm Kurdish forces with the aim of fomenting a popular uprising in Iran, multiple people familiar with the plan told CNN.

The Trump administration has been in active discussions with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders in Iraq about providing them with military support, the sources said.

Iranian Kurdish armed groups have thousands of forces operating along the Iraq-Iran border, primarily in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Several of the groups have released public statements since the beginning of the war hinting at imminent action and urging Iranian military forces to defect. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been striking Kurdish groups and said on Tuesday that it targeted Kurdish forces with dozens of drones.

Also on Tuesday, President Donald Trump spoke with the president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), Mustafa Hijri, according to a senior Iranian Kurdish official. KDPI was one of the groups targeted by the IRGC.

Iranian Kurdish opposition forces are expected to take part in a ground operation in Western Iran, in the coming days, the senior Iranian Kurdish official told CNN.

“We believe we have a big chance now,” the source said, explaining the timing of the operation. The source added the militias expect US and Israeli support.

Trump also called Iraqi Kurdish leaders on Sunday to discuss the US military operation in Iran and how the US and the Kurds could work together as the mission progresses, two US officials and a third source familiar with the conversations said, as first reported by Axios.

Any attempt to arm Iranian Kurdish groups would need support from the Iraqi Kurds to let the weapons transit and use Iraqi Kurdistan as launching ground.

One person familiar with the discussions said that the idea would be for Kurdish armed forces to take on the Iranian security forces and pin them down to make it easier for unarmed Iranians in the major cities to turn out without getting massacred again as they were during unrest in January.

Another US official said the Kurds could help sow chaos in the region and stretch the Iranian regime’s military resources thin. Still other ideas have centered around whether the Kurds could take and hold territory in the northern part of Iran that would create a buffer zone for Israel.

The CIA declined to comment for this story.

‘Clearly trying to jump-start’ an uprising

Alex Plitsas, a CNN national security analyst and former senior Pentagon official under former President Barack Obama, said that the US “is clearly trying to jump-start” the process of Iranians overthrowing the regime by arming the Kurds, a historic US regional ally.

“The Iranian people are generally unarmed as a whole and unless the security services collapse, it’ll be difficult for them to take over unless someone arms them,” Plitsas told CNN. “I believe the US is hopeful that this will inspire others on the ground in Iran to do the same.”

Jen Gavito, a former senior State Department official specializing in the Middle East under former President Joe Biden, said that she is concerned about whether the implications of arming the Kurds have been fully considered.

“We are already facing a volatile security situation, on both sides of the border,” Gavito told CNN. “This has the potential to undermine Iraqi sovereignty and essentially empower armed militias with no accountability and with little understanding of what it may set in motion.”

In recent days, the Israeli military has been striking Iranian military and police outposts along its border with Iraq, in part to lay the groundwork for the possible flow of armed Kurdish forces into northwest Iran, one of the sources said. An Israeli source said those strikes are likely to intensify in the coming days.

Still, any US and Israeli support for a Kurdish ground force tasked with helping to dislodge the Iranian regime would need to be extensive, the people familiar with the matter said. US intelligence assessments have consistently indicated that the Iranian Kurds don’t currently have the influence or resources to bolster a successful uprising against the government, said one of the people. And Iranian Kurdish parties are looking for political assurances from the Trump administration before committing to join any resistance effort, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Kurdish opposition groups are also fractured with a history of tension, differing ideologies, and competing agendas, and some Trump officials who have been involved in the discussions about supporting the groups have concerns about their motivations in aiding the US.

Officials have raised the question of whether that dynamic could jeopardize a US-Kurds working relationship now, given the amount of trust needed for this type of cooperation.

“It may not be as simple as Americans convincing a proxy force to fight on its behalf,” a Trump administration official said. “You have a group of people who are thinking about their own interests, and the question is whether getting them involved aligns with their interests.”

The US has a long history with Kurdish forces

The Kurdish people are an ethnic minority group without an official state. Today, there are an estimated 25-30 million Kurds, the majority living in a region that stretches across parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Armenia. Most Kurds are Sunni Muslims, but the Kurdish population has diverse cultural, social, religious and political traditions as well as a variety of dialects.

Many Trump administration officials have privately warned of the disillusionment Kurdish forces have felt when working with the US in the past, and their frequent complaints of feeling hung out to dry by the Americans.

“There is a concern that if an uprising is unsuccessful and the US withdraws, it will add to the narrative of abandoning the Kurds,” said Plitsas. Trump’s former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis resigned in part because Trump moved to pull US forces out of Syria in his first term, which Mattis viewed as an unacceptable abandonment of the US’ Kurdish allies there.

The CIA has a long, complex history of working with Iraqi Kurdish factions dating back decades as part of the US war in Iraq. The agency currently has an outpost in Iraqi Kurdistan located near the border with Iran, according to two people familiar with the matter. The US also has a consulate in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, and US and coalition troops are based there as part of the anti-ISIS campaign.

Some Kurds had hoped that in exchange for working with US forces, the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq would win its independence, though that never came to fruition.

The US also leaned heavily on Kurdish forces in recent years as part of its campaign to counter Islamic State forces in Iraq in Syria. That has included taking on the responsibility of guarding thousands of ISIS detainees at makeshift prison camps in the north of that country.

However, earlier this year the new, US-aligned Syrian government launched a swift military campaign to take control of the country’s north that included attacks against ISIS and pushing out Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces. Facing that campaign, Kurdish forces evacuated and stopped guarding the ISIS prisons when US forces pulled out of the country. In January, the US’ Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said that the purpose of the US’ alliance with the SDF had “largely expired.”

Most say Trump administration still hasn’t explained Iran goals, CBS News poll finds

    March 3, 2026 / 5:04 PM EST / CBS News

Most Americans feel the Trump administration has not clearly explained the U.S.’ goals in the conflict with Iran.

Explanation — or the perceived lack of one — is linked to whether people support it or not.

The longer Americans believe the conflict will last, the more they disapprove. Half the country believes it’ll be months, or even years before it’s over.

When they don’t think the administration has explained, they think it’ll last longer or aren’t sure.

And perhaps the most immediate view is this: Right now, more Americans feel the military action will make the U.S. less safe than more safe.

Americans do have their own range of ideas about what the administration’s goals might be, and they think there are a lot of them.

The people who say they think the goal is to stop nuclear weapons, stop terrorism or help the Iranian people tend to be supportive.

Some also voice a more cynical view, that they think it’s to gain political advantage back in the U.S.

    Overall, most Americans disapprove.

But the president’s Republican — and especially MAGA — base is solidly behind the action. Most of them think it is making the U.S. more safe.

This survey recontacted Americans first interviewed for our poll last week that was completed prior to the start of airstrikes.

Last week, before the airstrikes began, somewhat more people said they’d approve of military action specifically to prevent nuclear weapons than say they approve of the action generally today.

One reason for the difference: the people who have since moved to disapproval think the administration has not explained its goals. And they don’t think it’ll be a short conflict, and instead believe it will either be long or are uncertain about its duration.

A sizable two-thirds say the administration should get approval from Congress for further military action.

(Republicans don’t think that’s necessary, echoing the views they expressed regarding U.S. military action in Venezuela.)

This CBS News/YouGov survey is based on a nationally representative sample of 1,399 U.S. adults who were recontacted March 2-3, 2026, after the start of U.S. military action against Iran, following aninitial surveyconducted before U.S. military action February 25-27, 2026 using a nationally representative sample of 2,264 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the total sample in the recontact survey is ± 3.2 points.

“By the way, I’m not happy with the U.K. either,” the president said, referring to Starmer blocking the United States’ use of U.K. bases to launch attacks on Iran.

Starmer initially blocked the U.S. from using British military bases, specifically Diego Garcia, for strikes against Iran during Operation Epic Fury. The U.K. later permitted the use of the bases for “defensive strikes” after Trump’s complaints.

The president referenced the Chagos Islands Tuesday, which are British territories in the Indian Ocean, saying it has taken “three, four days for us to work out where we can land there.”

“It would have been much more convenient landing there as opposed to flying many extra hours, so we are very surprised,” he said.

Later, the president said the United Kingdom has been “very, very uncooperative with that stupid island.”

“It’s a shame,” Trump said. “That country, the U.K., and I love that country, I love it.”

“My mother was born there,” he said. “My father was born. Right? He knows all about my father. My father was born there. So, you know, very places that you sort of automatically very, very feel warmly about.”

Starmer has defended his decision to stay out of the conflict, saying the U.K. was “not involved in the initial strikes against Iran, and we will not join offensive action now.”

“But in the face of Iran’s barrage of missiles and drones, we will protect our people in the region,” Starmer said in an address Monday to Parliament. “President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest. That is what I’ve done, and I stand by it.”

Declan Coady)。

This screengrab, taken from a video geolocated by CNN, shows smoke rising from a US facility at the Port of Shuaiba on Sunday, March 1, 2026, following an Iranian strike which left six American service members dead.

    Social Media

The Pentagon has identified four of the six US service members who were killed in an Iranian drone strike on Sunday.

The soldiers are Capt. Cody Khork, 35; Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, 42; Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, 39; and Sgt. Declan Coady, 20. All four were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, an Army Reserve sustainment unit out of Iowa.

The two other soldiers who were killed in the strike on Sunday have not yet been identified.

    Ad Feedback

CNN first reported that the suspected drone strike hit a temporary tactical operations center at the port of Shuaiba in Kuwait on Sunday. At the time of their deaths the soldiers were serving with 1st Theater Sustainment Command.

A source familiar with the situation described the operation center as a triple wide trailer with office space inside; the building was surrounded by concrete barriers that are typically used to protect military structures overseas from things like car bombs and improvised explosive devices. There was nothing overhead that could shield the building from drones or missiles, however.

There was no siren or warning ahead of the strike to give the troops time to take cover in a bunker, the source familiar said.

1st Theater Sustainment Command is a standalone group based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, comprised of troops from units from around the country who are assigned to support roles overseas in nine-month rotations.

The command oversees the resupply and support of US forces around the Middle East, bringing in ammunition, water, fuel, food, repair parts, and more. It also manages ports and flights, according to the command’s website, in order to “keep people and equipment moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

18 service members have been seriously wounded as a result of the conflict with Iran, according to US Central Command.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have indicated that more casualties are likely expected.

“They’re great people,” Trump said about the six troops who were killed [in a phone interview] with the Daily Mail. “And, you know, we expect that to happen, unfortunately. Could happen continuous — it could happen again.”

Pentagon releases names of first U.S. service members killed in Iran war

    March 3, 2026 / 6:04 PM EST / CBS News

The Pentagon has released the names of four American service members killed during the ongoing war with Iran. They were among six who died when an Iranian strike hit a tactical operations center in Kuwait.

The Defense Department identified them as:

    • Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35, of Winter Haven, Florida
    • Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42, of Bellevue, Nebraska
    • Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota
    • Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, lowa

They died Sunday in Port Shuaiba during an unmanned aircraft system attack, the Defense Department said Tuesday in a statement.

They were all assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines. The Pentagon said the incident is under investigation.

The names of the two other U.S. service members who have been killed are being withheld until next of kin are notified.

U.S. Central Command initially announced Sunday that three service members were killed in Kuwait, then said Monday that another had died of their injuries. Later, they said remains of two previously unaccounted-for service members were also recovered from a facility that was hit during Iran’s initial attacks.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said the deadly incident happened when an incoming munition hit a tactical operations center in Kuwait.

As of Tuesday morning, the number of seriously wounded in the U.S.-Iran conflict, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, was down from 18 to 10 service members as they progressed through medical treatment, a U.S. official said.

In a video message Sunday night, President Trump offered his condolences to the families and warned that there will likely be more American casualties, saying combat operations “will continue until all of our objectives are achieved.”

“We pray for the full recovery of the wounded and send our immense love and eternal gratitude to the families of the fallen,” Mr. Trump said. “And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That’s the way it is.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had called the service members who were killed “the absolute best of America.” “May we prosecute the remainder of this operation in a manner that honors them,” he said.

The U.S. and Israel launched a massive military operation early Saturday in Iran, including striking Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound in Tehran and killing him. The Israel Defense Forces said other Iranian officials and commanders were also killed, including an adviser to Khamenei.

Iran’s military launched retaliatory strikes on Israel and other U.S.-allied nations in the Middle East.

On Monday, Mr. Trump said the U.S.-Israeli military operation represented the “last best chance” of addressing the threat posed by the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missiles and nuclear program, and that the administration expects the campaign to last four to five weeks.

Tucker Reals, Joe Walsh, Caroline Linton and Jordan Freiman contributed to this report.
