    Summary

    • Man admitted he did not agree with Omar’s political views, DOJ says
    • Omar was condemning Trump’s immigration crackdown in the town hall

WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) – A man pleaded guilty on Thursday to assaulting U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during ‌a January town hall in which the Democratic lawmaker condemned Republican President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, the U.S. Justice Department said.

“Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, pleaded guilty today to one count of Assaulting a United States Officer in U.S. District Court,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Kazmierczak admitted in a Thursday hearing before U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen that he “planned the assault and that he did not agree with Representative Omar’s political views,” the Justice Department said.

In her remarks during the town hall, Omar was criticizing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for its crackdown in Minnesota and the fatal shootings by federal agents of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis.

Trump’s crackdown and ICE detentions have been widely condemned by human rights groups who call them a violation of due process and free speech rights. Rights advocates also say the ‌crackdown has created an unsafe environment, particularly for ethnic minorities.

Kazmierczak sprayed Omar with apple cider vinegar from a syringe, which landed on Omar’s clothing and skin, the Justice Department said, adding that lab analysis confirmed the liquid contained acetic acid. Omar was uninjured in the attack.

Omar, who is Muslim, came to the U.S. as a 12-year-old girl and became an American citizen in 2000.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar in public remarks and social media posts, while also taking aim at her Somali nationality and saying she should be “institutionalized” and removed from the U.S.

Kazmierczak gestured and shouted at Omar during the town hall before security guards subdued him. He was subsequently arrested. The town hall meeting in Minneapolis was temporarily disrupted, but Omar later continued her remarks.

In recent years, political experts have raised alarm about political violence in a polarized U.S.

Cyberattack shutters Canvas learning platform for schools across the U.S.

    May 7, 2026 / 11:40 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A system that thousands of schools and universities use was offline Thursday due to a cyberattack, creating chaos as students tried to study for finals and underscoring education’s dependence on technology.

The hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach at Instructure, the company behind the learning management system Canvas, said Luke Connolly, a threat analyst at the cybersecurity firm Emisoft.

CBS News has reached out to Instructure for comment. Late Thursday night, Instructure posted to a status log that Canvas was “now available for most users.”

Some of the universities that have reported being targeted include Penn State, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Columbia University and Union College New Jersey.

UCLA was among several California schools that reported being crippled by the outage.

Also impacted in the Chicago area were Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois Chicago and the University of Illinois.

In a message to students, Penn State said that “no one has access” to Canvas, and a “resolution” was not expected “within the next 24 hours.”

The school said all tests scheduled for Thursday and Friday in its Pollock Testing Center were canceled.

The student newspaper at Harvard reported that the system was down there, too. And public school districts also sought to reassure parents, with officials in Spokane, Washington, writing that they aren’t “aware of any sensitive data contained in this breach.”

Canvas is used to manage grades, course notes, assignments, lecture videos and more. The hacking group posted online that nearly 9,000 schools worldwide were affected, with billions of private messages and other records accessed, Connolly said.

Screenshots he provided showed that the group began threatening to leak the trove of data on Sunday, setting deadlines of Thursday and May 12. Connolly said the later date indicates that discussions regarding extortion payments may be ongoing.

Rich in digitized data, the nation’s schools are prime targets for far-flung criminal hackers, who are assiduously locating and scooping up sensitive files that not long ago were committed to paper in locked cabinets. Past attacks have hit Minneapolis Public Schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Instructure has not posted about the attack on its social media.

Connolly said the Canvas attack is strikingly similar to a breach at PowerSchool, which also offers learning management tools. In that case, a Massachusetts college student was charged.

Connolly described ShinyHunters as a loose affiliation of teenagers and young adults based in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The group also has been tied to other attacks, including one aimed at Live Nation’s Ticketmaster subsidiary.

US judge rules humanities grant terminations by DOGE were unlawful, discriminatory

    • Grant terminations involved ‘blatant’ discrimination, court finds
    • DOGE lacked legal authority, judge says
    • Ruling says terminations violated US Constitution’s First and Fifth Amendments

WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) – A federal judge ruled on Thursday that the terminations of hundreds of humanities grants last year by the Trump administration’s so-called Department of ‌Government Efficiency were unconstitutional, and involved “blatant” discrimination.

In April last year, President Donald Trump’s administration terminated more than 1,400 grants, representing over $100 million in congressionally appropriated funds awarded to scholars, writers, research institutions and other humanities organizations.

The terminations were part of a cost-cutting drive that billionaire Elon Musk was leading at DOGE.

“The Government engaged in blatant viewpoint discrimination,” U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon said in condemning what the Trump administration cast as a crackdown on diversity practices.

The judge said the terminations violated the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, which provides free speech rights, and its Fifth Amendment’s equal protection component. The ruling also said DOGE did not have the legal authority to terminate the grants.

“What mattered to DOGE was not whether a grant lacked scholarly merit, failed to comply with its terms, or fell outside NEH’s (National Endowment for the Humanities) statutory purposes. What mattered was that the grant concerned a ‘minority group’,” the judge wrote.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

“DOGE swept in race and ethnicity – including grants concerning Black, Asian, Latino, and Indigenous communities – as well as national origin ‌and immigration status; religion and religious identity (including Jewish, Christian, and Muslim subjects); sex; and sexual orientation, as criteria for grant termination.”

The judge also said that DOGE staff’s use of artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to come up with the rationale to terminate some grants would not absolve the government of responsibility for its decisions.

“The government cannot escape liability for DOGE’s work by scapegoating ChatGPT,” the judge wrote.

Rights advocates have raised concerns about Trump’s attacks on educational and arts institutions, diversity initiatives, and historical places and museums, saying they could undo decades of social progress and undermine acknowledgement of critical phases of American history.

Trump has alleged that many cultural, arts and educational institutions and bodies are a bastion of liberalism and “anti-American” values that do not portray U.S. history in a positive light.

He has made threats to cut their federal funding over pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s assault on Gaza, transgender policies, climate initiatives and diversity programs.

His targets have ranged from elite universities, the Smithsonian Institution and the Kennedy Center to broadcasters including the National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service.

President Donald Trump visited the National Mall on Thursday, driving his motorcade through the drained Reflecting Pool to inspect a restoration project he said is correcting a “disaster” left by the Obama administration.

Standing on the pool’s floor, the president touted a $1.8 million overhaul of the landmark, contrasting it with the $38 million spent under former President Barack Obama on a project Trump described as a “construction nightmare” that leaked immediately upon completion.

The Reflecting Pool, which stretches more than 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is one of the most visited landmarks in the nation’s capital, drawing millions of tourists each year and serving as the backdrop for historic events and presidential ceremonies.

Trump was joined by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to review the application of a new, industrial-strength sealant. Trump revealed he personally selected the color for the new surface: “American Flag Blue.”

“The color was never good because basically it had a gray stone underneath,” the president told reporters. “Now it’s going to have the great color. It’s going to last a long time and you’ll have no leak—guaranteed.”

While previous estimates to fix the 2,400-foot-long pool reached as high as $355 million over a multi-year timeline, according to prior National Park Service planning documents, Trump said his team is completing the work in two weeks for a fraction of the cost.

The National Park Service previously oversaw a major rehabilitation of the Reflecting Pool that was completed in 2012 at a cost of roughly $30 million, addressing structural issues and chronic leaking that had plagued the site for years.

The inspection was part of a broader “beautification” push for the nation’s capital. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the Department of the Interior has cleared more than 1,000 graffiti sites and 82 homeless camps in recent months under Trump’s direction to make the city “safe and beautiful.”

“We’ve never had a president who has cared more, invested more, or put more time and attention into everything about the Mall,” Burgum said.

The president also previewed several upcoming projects, including improvements to the Lincoln Memorial Undercroft and a proposed Triumphal Arc, though details on timelines, funding, and final approvals were not immediately released.
