American Dennis Coyle marks 1 year of detention in Afghanistan

    January 26, 2026 / 2:49 PM EST / CBS News

Monday marks one year since Dennis Coyle, a 64-year-old academic from Colorado, was taken by force from his Kabul apartment by the Taliban. His abduction came just six days after another American, Ryan Corbett, was released at the start of President Trump’s second term.

Coyle, who spent nearly two decades in Afghanistan conducting language research, is being held by the Taliban General Directorate of Intelligence in near-solitary confinement with no charges filed, according to his family. Coyle’s capture so soon after Corbett’s release illustrates the ongoing risks faced by Americans in Afghanistan, even those with long-standing legal status and deep ties to local communities.

“Dennis is a gentle, soft-spoken man who always listens deeply to others, often over a comforting cup of hot green tea, embodying the Afghan cultural emphasis of hospitality and respectful presence,” Molly Long, one of Coyle’s sisters, told CBS News. “In his nearly two decades in Afghanistan, Dennis faithfully honored the Afghan cultural values of hospitality and kindness.”

Coyle’s mother, Donna, 83, and his three sisters, Molly, Amy and Patti, have said the isolation has been crushing. He has missed births, family celebrations, and everyday moments. According to the family, Coyle is confined to a basement room, where he must ask permission to use the bathroom.

“This past year has been incredibly challenging for our family, as we’ve become entangled in the abhorrent practice of hostage diplomacy amid my brother’s wrongful detainment by the Taliban since January 27, 2025,” Long said. “We are deeply grateful for the broad bipartisan support we’ve received for President Trump to wield the formidable strength of the United States — as he has done so effectively in securing the release of over 90 hostages in Gaza, Venezuela, and around the world — to bring our brother home.”

“Our family is thankful and comforted that the president has personally committed to addressing this matter and taking a strong position on it, and we look forward to seeing Dennis again soon,” Long said.

Two Taliban officials insist Coyle is in good health and his “rights as a prisoner are protected.” They also claim formal court proceedings in his case would begin “soon.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In an interview in which Coyle’s case was raised last week, President Trump said he would “take a very strong position on it,” without elaborating further.

Last June, the U.S. government officially designated Coyle as wrongfully detained under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act, a status that unlocks select government tools and elevates the priority of efforts to secure his release.

“The Taliban should immediately release Dennis Coyle and all Americans detained in Afghanistan and end its practice of hostage diplomacy,” the State Department told CBS News in a statement. “We remind all Americans — do not travel to Afghanistan. The Taliban has detained Americans for years and the U.S. Government cannot guarantee your safety.”

The United States does not recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate government and lacks a diplomatic presence in the country, complicating release negotiations that are often conducted by Qatar as an intermediary on behalf of the U.S.

A Qatari official declined to comment on any involvement in mediating Coyle’s case.

Acknowledging Coyle’s detention, Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told CBS News, “Negotiations have indeed taken place and are ongoing; however, both sides have not yet reached a final conclusion.”

“The Afghan government remains committed to what has been discussed with the United States. It should also be noted that Afghans have been wrongly detained by the United States and continue to be held there. Their fate, as well as the suffering of their families, is similar to that experienced by others in detention.”

“These talks should lead to concrete results and a final conclusion, ensuring that prisoners from both sides are released,” Mujahid said.

The Biden administration held negotiations with the Taliban to swap Americans detained in Afghanistan for Muhammad Rahim al Afghani, a Guantanamo Bay detainee alleged to have been an associate of Osama bin Laden, but the talks ultimately fell through. U.S. officials proposed releasing Rahim in exchange for George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett and Afghan-American Mahmoud Habibi, who was abducted in 2022, while the Taliban countered by seeking Rahim and two others while denying it held Habibi.

With the help of Qatari negotiators, Corbett and another American, William McKenty, were released last January in exchange for a Taliban figure who had been imprisoned for life on drug trafficking charges. Glezmann and another American, Faye Hall, were released in March, followed by a fifth American, Amir Amiri, who was freed last September.

Another senior Taliban official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity referred to Rahim and claimed the U.S. offered a timeframe of three to six months for releasing Rahim. “When we released U.S. citizens last time, the U.S. committed to releasing the last Afghan detainee from Guantanamo. We have already made many concessions. That is enough.”

In addition to Coyle, at least one other American — a former U.S. army soldier whose purpose for traveling to Afghanistan is unclear — is believed to be currently held by the Taliban.

The State Department has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Habibi’s return.

“We are not aware of Habibi’s current status and we [have] not arrested him,” the second senior Taliban official told CBS News.

During the first Trump administration, the U.S. took steps to normalize relations with the Taliban, including troop withdrawal agreements and increased diplomatic contacts. Last September, President Trump expressed interest in regaining access to Bagram Air Base, underscoring a desire to maintain strategic leverage in Afghanistan, while Taliban officials have signaled interest in deeper engagement with the U.S.

That engagement has stalled to an extent as the U.S. has implemented sweeping restrictions that include suspending visa issuance and entry for Afghan nationals under recent national security proclamations, tightening vetting, and pausing processing of virtually all Afghan immigration and asylum applications. The moves have significantly reduced legal pathways for Afghans seeking entry or resettlement in the U.S.

The domestic policy debate intensified following a November 2025 shooting in Washington, D.C., in which an Afghan national evacuated to the U.S. after the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan allegedly killed a National Guardsman and wounded another. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, previously served for several years in Afghanistan’s elite “Zero Units,” paramilitary forces that operated under CIA direction.

Still, the Taliban and the United States remain in contact, Taliban sources said, noting former U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad visited Kabul earlier this month. White House counterterrorism advisor Seb Gorka and special envoy for hostage response Adam Boehler traveled to Afghanistan to broker Amiri’s release in September.

“We are very clear that we will not offer any further goodwill gestures,” one of the senior Taliban officials told CBS News.

Last September, the Trump administration created the State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention designation to target countries or groups that hold Americans without legal justification. Modeled after the state sponsors of terrorism designation, the measure would give the State Department authority to impose sanctions, export controls and travel restrictions on nationals of designated countries that detain Americans for political leverage, and to restrict where U.S. passports may be used. To date, no countries have been designated.

Coyle’s family has launched FreeDennisCoyle.com to coordinate advocacy and share updates.

More than half of all Democrats in the House of Representatives are now backing a resolution to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem in the wake of another federal law enforcement-involved shooting in Minneapolis.

The push to impeach Noem, led by Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., has 133 Democrats as co-sponsors endorsing the effort as of Monday morning, her office told Fox News Digital. That’s out of 213 total lawmakers in the House Democratic Caucus.

It’s gaining steam among both progressive and moderate Democrats, like Rep. Laura Gillen, D-N.Y., who announced on Sunday that she too would support impeaching Noem amid the chaos in Minneapolis.

“Another U.S. citizen has been killed at the hands of ICE and there must be accountability, which is why Secretary Noem must be impeached immediately,” Gillen posted on X.

It’s a notable expression of support; Gillen was one of only seven House Democrats to vote in favor of funding DHS last week as part of Congress’ yearly federal appropriations process.

The surge of support comes after Alex Pretti, a nurse at Minneapolis’ Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent over the weekend during a wider demonstration against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in the Midwest city.

Noem said over the weekend that it appeared Pretti “arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement.”

“An individual approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun. The officers attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently. Fearing for his life and for the lives of his fellow officers around him, an agent fired defensive shots,” she said.

But various eyewitness accounts and critics of the Trump administration have disputed claims that Pretti was brandishing a weapon, though he was confirmed to be in possession of a handgun with a legal permit to carry.

Publicly circulated video of the incident shows him approaching federal officers holding what appeared to be his phone, filming as agents knocked a female agitator to the ground.

Pretti appeared to attempt to help the female agitator when he was knocked to the ground himself. One video angle appears to show an officer removing Pretti’s weapon before he was shot.

The majority of Republicans have criticized Democratic leaders in Minnesota for fomenting anger toward federal officers among the population and for refusing to cooperate in Trump’s offensive against illegal immigrants in the first place.

Meanwhile, Democrats have accused Trump officials of letting federal agents run amok with impunity and cause chaos in Minneapolis.

It’s not clear if House Democratic leaders will support Kelly’s push to impeach Noem now, but Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., told reporters to “stay tuned” last week when asked about the effort.

Any push to impeach Noem during this congressional term would likely be largely symbolic, however. It’s highly unlikely that enough Republicans would vote with Democrats on the resolution to pass the House, or that it will get the 60 votes in the Senate needed for removal.

House Democrats’ furor to boot Noem from her post has not quite made its way to the upper chamber, but it got support from one key moderate in the party.

Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., echoed her colleagues in the lower chamber and demanded that the DHS head be impeached for being an “abject failure” at leading the agency.

Rosen, like several other congressional Democrats, reacted sharply to Pretti’s killing and, so far, is the only Senate Democrat calling for Noem’s impeachment.

The lawmaker argued that Noem’s usage of ICE in Minnesota was the “latest proof” of her losing control over her own agency.

“Kristi Noem and her department’s latest attempt to mislead the American public regarding the brutal and unjustified killing of Alex Pretti is deeply shameful, and she must be impeached and removed from office immediately,” Rosen said.

Rosen’s position carries weight, too, given that she is one of the more moderate members of the Senate Democratic caucus, and she was also one of a handful to cross the aisle to reopen the government during the longest closure in history last year.

Senate Democrats are now ready to block the DHS funding bill as the deadline to fund the government and prevent another shutdown fast approaches.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital of Democrats’ efforts, “DHS enforces the laws Congress passes, period. If certain members don’t like those laws, changing them is literally their job.”

“While ICE officers are facing a staggering 1,300% spike in assaults, too many politicians would rather defend criminals and attack the men and women who are enforcing our laws and did nothing while Joe Biden facilitated an invasion of tens of millions of illegal aliens into our country,” McLaughlin said. “It’s time they focus on protecting the American people, the work this Department is doing every day under Secretary Noem’s leadership.”

Trump’s NATO warning pushes Europe to face the cost of defending itself

Ukrainian president delivers warning at Davos that continent isn’t ready to defend itself

    By Morgan Phillips
    Fox News

    Published January 26, 2026 8:14am EST

Speaking to global leaders in Davos, Switzerland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a blunt warning to Europe about its self-defense.

“Europe needs to know how to defend itself,” he said, arguing that the continent still isn’t ready to stand on its own without U.S. backing.

Zelensky’s remarks reflected a growing anxiety across Europe — that decades of reliance on American protection left the continent ill-prepared for a more dangerous era. While European countries have contributed troops, weapons and money to conflicts from Afghanistan to Ukraine, the ultimate backstop for NATO’s security has remained Washington.

President Donald Trump has openly challenged that assumption, repeatedly warning NATO allies that U.S. protection should not be taken for granted, and insisting the U.S. needed to take Greenland from Denmark.

Before he ruled out the use of force to wrest control of the island, European officials had worried about a military dust-up between Western powers would mean the end of NATO.

“Maybe we should have put NATO to the test: Invoked Article 5, and forced NATO to come here and protect our Southern Border from further Invasions of Illegal Immigrants, thus freeing up large numbers of Border Patrol Agents for other tasks,” Trump mused on Truth Social Thursday.

Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. may not defend allies that fail to invest in their own security rattled the alliance and pushed European governments to pledge sharp increases in defense spending.

Even so, European leaders continue to acknowledge how central U.S. power remains to NATO’s defense. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has pointed to the American nuclear umbrella as the alliance’s “ultimate guarantor,” alongside a strong U.S. conventional presence in Europe.

“We are still having a strong, conventional U.S. presence in Europe,” Rutte said, “and, of course, the nuclear umbrella as our ultimate guarantor.”

Security analysts say that long-standing guarantee shaped Europe’s choices over time.

“For much of the post–Cold War period, it is fair to say that Europeans underinvested in defense, partly because threats were low, and partly because a series of U.S. presidents did everything they could to convince Europeans that we would stay there forever,” Barry Posen, a professor of political science at MIT, told Fox News Digital.

“Trump was right to argue that Europeans have been slow to fix up their forces as the situation changed — as Russia pulled itself back together and became more demanding and threatening, and as China also grew its power,” Posen said.

But Posen warned that driving a wedge inside NATO carries risks.

“The problem Trump faces is that ‘conditional commitments’ make challenges more likely,” he said. “And then we would still have to decide what to do. As a great power, in the event of an actual challenge, we might not wish to look weak.”

Over time, those choices carried political consequences. With American power serving as the backstop, defense spending was easier to restrain than politically popular domestic subsidies such as healthcare, pensions and education, which became entrenched in European politics.

As defense demands rise, governments are running into those constraints. In Italy, officials have warned that boosting military spending to meet NATO commitments would strain an already tight budget, where pensions and social benefits account for a large share of public spending.

Germany found a way to buy time. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Berlin created a €100 billion special defense fund — financed through new borrowing and kept outside the regular budget — to rebuild its military without immediately cutting other spending. The move jump-started rearmament while shielding popular social programs from near-term cuts.

But the fund is temporary. Once it runs out, sustaining higher defense spending will require permanent budget decisions inside a system built around strict fiscal rules and expansive social commitments.

John Byrne of Concerned Veterans for America said Europe’s dependence on the United States runs deeper than defense budgets. Even as European governments pledge more spending, Byrne said they still lack the senior-level experience needed to run NATO operations without U.S. leadership.

“They don’t have the experience,” Byrne said, pointing to the fact that large, multinational military commands have overwhelmingly been led by American generals for decades. “That institutional knowledge still sits almost entirely with the United States.”

Byrne said that gap matters in a crisis. Running complex, coalition military operations requires years of practice at the highest levels, he said — something that cannot be fixed quickly, even with higher spending.

“You can buy equipment,” Byrne said. “You can’t instantly buy command experience.”

During his address at Davos, Switzerland, Thursday, Zelenskyy questioned whether Europe has the power or the will to act independently if assumptions about U.S. protection change.

“Europe still feels more like geography, history, tradition, not a real political force, not a great power,” Zelenskyy said.

He warned that European leaders continue to plan around expectations that may no longer hold.

“To believe that the United States will act, that it will not stand aside and will help,” Zelenskyy said. “But what if it doesn’t? This question is everywhere in the minds of European leaders.”

Lawmakers exploring options for DHS bill in critical week for government funding talks

    2026-01-26T15:51:18.020Z / CNN

Senate Democrats and Republicans are weighing how to move forward on funding the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies after another deadly shooting by a federal officer in Minneapolis, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The options include potentially having the House return at the end of the week to approve a modified package of bills to avoid a partial government shutdown should it come to that. The House left Washington last week, expecting the Senate to pass the package of bills this week. Then, a Border Patrol agent shot and killed ICU nurse Alex Pretti over the weekend — significantly changing postures on Capitol Hill.

Aides emphasized that the dynamics fundamentally shifted over the last 72 hours. On Friday, no one was anticipating a government shutdown. By Saturday night, it became clear that there may be little way to avoid one.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/gettyimages-2258305342.jpg

The White House and GOP senators have begun initial outreach to Democrats to find a way out of shuttering the major federal agencies by week’s end, according to senior aides, but so far there’s no indication a shutdown crisis will be averted by the January 30 deadline.

Democrats want major changes to how US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is operating as a condition for voting on a funding package that would provide money to major federal agencies, such as the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.

“Republicans and the White House have reached out but have not yet raised any realistic solutions,” one Senate Democratic leadership aide said.

There are several potential options to avoid a shutdown, including stripping out funding for the Department of Homeland Security and separately moving the rest of the bills. But that would require the consent of all 100 senators after they return to Capitol Hill Tuesday — and would hinge on an agreement being reached by Senate Democrats and the White House, which has said it opposes separating the bills in the package.

Maine Republican Susan Collins, the Senate’s top appropriator, said that removing the DHS bill from the broader package “certainly would not be [her] first choice.”

“I think there might be a way to add some further reforms or procedural protections, but those discussions are ongoing,” she told reporters in the Capitol Monday, adding they would involve Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Still, Republicans say they are exploring all options as it relates to Democratic demands to strip the DHS bill out of the six-bill appropriations package already passed by the House. A top goal, they say, is to prevent a shutdown of what amounts to 75% of the government’s spending.

For their part, Democrats are trying to coalesce around a single set of demands, but a source familiar with those talks said conversations about what kinds of reforms Democrats will seek as it pertains to DHS are still ongoing. Democratic leaders are still soliciting suggestions and ideas from their members.

A quick compromise between the parties on changes to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement would be difficult, however. Many Republicans would likely oppose the types of changes to ICE that Democrats are demanding.

Nothing is at all finalized and discussions on next steps are preliminary.

This story has been updated with additional reporting.

  • “Narco sub” sinks with drugs on board after record amount of cocaine seized from vessel off the Azores

    January 26, 2026 / 12:58 PM EST / CBS/AFP

“Narco sub” sinks with drugs on board after record amount of cocaine seized from vessel off the Azores

    January 26, 2026 / 12:58 PM EST / CBS/AFP

Portuguese authorities on Monday said they had seized a record haul of cocaine from a semi-submersible craft intercepted off the Azores archipelago before the vessel sank in the open seas.

The nearly 9-ton cargo of drugs is “the biggest seizure of cocaine ever in Portugal,” a police spokeswoman told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Police said officers intercepted the so-called “narco sub” in recent days some 230 nautical miles from the islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

They were assisted by the navy and air force, as well as the U.K. and U.S. authorities, in difficult weather conditions.

The submersible eventually sank with 35 of the 300 packages of drugs it was carrying, the police said.

Portuguese authorities on Monday said they had seized a record haul of cocaine from a semi-submersible craft intercepted off the Azores archipelago. Portugal’s judicial police

It originated in Latin America and had three Colombians and a Venezuelan on board, it added.

Last March, police said officers had confiscated nearly 6.5 tons of cocaine from a semi-submersible vessel off the Azores while bound for the Iberian peninsula. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the British National Crime Agency and the Spanish Guardia Civil also assisted in that bust, authorities said at the time.

Narco subs, which cannot go fully underwater, are popular among international drug traffickers as they can sometimes elude detection by law enforcement.

Manned semisubmersibles built in clandestinejungle shipyardshave been used for decades to ferry cocaine north from Colombia, the world’s biggest cocaine producer, to Central America or Mexico.

But in recent years, they have been sailing much farther afield, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The journey can be deadly. In 2023, a narco sub with two dead bodiesand nearly 3 tons of cocaine aboard was seized off the coast of Colombia.
