U.K. health secretary will run for prime minister after challenging Starmer’s leadership in scathing resignation letter

    May 16, 2026 / 12:03 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Wes Streeting, who resigned as U.K. health secretary this week, announced Saturday he will run to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader and prime minister, after the party suffered disastrous local election results.

“We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing,” Streeting said at a think tank event in London, two days after Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham unveiled a bid to become a member of Parliament, or MP.

If successful, that would allow Burnham to run in a Labour leadership contest that now appears all but inevitable, though it is yet to be formally triggered by MPs.

Wes Streeting arrives at the Progress Conference at Convene in London, Saturday May 16, 2026. Jeff Moore/AP

Streeting wrote in a scathing resignation letter challenging Starmer’s leadership that he does not see the prime minister as being able to “lead the Labour Party into the next general election,” and noted that where the party needs “vision,” there is a “vacuum.”

His letter followed the resignations of four other members of Starmer’s government after the losses in the local elections. Nigel Farage and his right-wing populist party Reform U.K. made significant gains across England in those elections.

Streeting, whose political ambitions have long been known, is one of several challengers who could try to unseat the prime minister.

Challengers must get support from at least 20% of the Labour Party’s members of parliament to trigger a leadership election, according to the party’s rules.

Starmer has vowed to remain in office, warning lawmakers that any leadership contest would plunge the government into “chaos” at a time it should be focused on issues like the cost of living crisis and war in the Middle East.

He has been in office for just under two years after Labour won a landslide in the last national parliamentary elections.

2 presidential campaign staffers killed in Colombia weeks before election

    May 16, 2026 / 2:59 PM EDT / CBS News / AFP

Two campaign staffers working for a right-wing candidate in Colombia’s upcoming presidential election have been shot and killed, officials said Saturday.

Gunmen on motorcycles killed the two men Friday night in the central-west Meta Department, said the candidate, Abelardo de la Espriella.

Meta is a stronghold of rebel fighters who rejected a historic 2016 peace accord with the now-defunct and once-powerful FARC guerrilla army, and also a conduit for cocaine trafficking.

The government’s citizens’ rights ombudsman said on X that as the killings come in the lead-up to elections, they “seriously affect” people’s ability to take part.

Security is a big issue heading into the May 31 election to replace Colombia’s first leftist president, Gustavo Petro.

Colombia is enduring a wave of killings and rebel attacks, and de la Espriella and two other major candidates — including leftist front-runner Ivan Cepeda — have reported receiving death threats. All three travel with heavy security.

Cepeda’s vice presidential running mate was kidnapped for a few hours in February by rebels who refuse to embrace the 2016 accord with FARC.

Another renegade group is suspected of killing presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe in June of last year.

Version of hantavirus behind deadly cruise ship outbreak matches known strain, France says

    May 16, 2026 / 2:07 PM EDT / CBS/AP

France’s Pasteur Institute said it has fully sequenced the Andes virus detected in a French passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship and found it matched viruses already known in South America, with no evidence so far of new characteristics that would make it more transmissible or more dangerous.

“The analyzed virus corresponds to the viruses already known and monitored in South America,” Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said Friday on social media.

“At this stage, no element suggests the emergence” of a form of the virus that could be more transmissible or more dangerous, Rist added. The Andes virus is the only form of hantavirus that can be transmitted from person to person.

Pasteur said genomic analysis confirmed the virus found in the French passenger matched the virus detected in other cases aboard the ship and closely resembled known Andes virus samples circulating in South America.

“This sequencing work allows us to better understand the virus and to ensure close health monitoring,” Rist said. The data would be shared with the international scientific community, she added.

Hantaviruses are a family of rare viruses usually passed to humans through contact with contaminated rodent waste or saliva, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. Cases can result in severe pulmonary and respiratory distress.

Pasteur said the viruses detected in patients from the ship were identical to each other and about 97% similar to some Andes viruses circulating in South America, including those identified in rodents. Jean-Claude Manuguerra, who heads Pasteur’s Environment and Infectious Risk unit, said the remaining variation appeared to reflect natural viral variation and did not seem to affect the characteristics of the virus detected among travelers.

The French passenger tested positive after traveling aboard the MV Hondius and has been treated in Paris. French authorities previously said she was in serious condition.

The hantavirus outbreak on the ship has reached 10 cases, eight of which have been confirmed, according to the World Health Organization. Three people on the cruise died, including a Dutch couple who health officials believe were the first exposed to the virus while visiting South America. The Dutch couple visited sites where the species of rat known to carry the Andes virus was present, the WHO previously said.

Cruise ship passengers were carefully evacuated from the ship after it arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands and placed on repatriation flights to their home countries last week. That included 17 Americans and one British dual citizen, who arrived in the U.S. early on May 11. Those passengers were all being monitored at the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska as of Friday.

Frequent burials and at least 80 dead as Congo grapples with Ebola outbreak

    May 16, 2026 12:13 PM EDT / CBS/AP

At least 80 deaths have been reported in Congo’s new Ebola disease outbreak in the eastern Ituri province, authorities said, as health workers raced Saturday to intensify screening and contact tracing to contain the disease.

Officials first announced the outbreak on Friday, with 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases. Locals in Ituri’s capital, Bunia, said they were afraid for their lives amid frequent burials.

“Every day, people are dying … and this has been going on for about a week. In a single day, we bury two, three or even more people,” said Jean Marc Asimwe, a resident of Bunia.

Congolese Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said late Friday there have been eight laboratory-confirmed cases, and among them four deaths.

Test results confirmed it is the Bundibugyo virus, a variant of the disease that has been less prominent in Congo’s past outbreaks. This is Congo’s 17th outbreak since Ebola first emerged in the country in 1976.

A general view of Bunia, Congo, Friday, May 15, 2026. Associated Press

Ebola is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. The disease it causes is rare, but severe and often fatal.

The Bundibugyo virus has only been responsible for two previous Ebola outbreaks, according to CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Céline Gounder. One, in Uganda in 2007, resulted in 55 cases. The other, in the Congo in 2012, resulted in 57 cases. There are no approved vaccines or treatments for this strain of Ebola, Gounder said, noting “medical professionals seem very concerned about the possibility or the ability to contain this.”

The suspected index case in the latest outbreak is a nurse who died at a hospital in Bunia, Kamba said. He said the case dates back to April 24.

He did not say whether samples from the nurse were tested, but said the person presented symptoms suggestive of Ebola.

A New York doctor who contracted and survived Ebola more than 10 years ago told CBS News on Friday that he is “really concerned” for healthcare workers treating Ebola patients. Medical staff have “very close contact with people when they’re most contagious,” said Dr. Craig Spencer, an emergency room physician and public health professor at Brown University.

    Outbreak spreads to neighboring Uganda

Uganda confirmed Friday an Ebola case that authorities said was “imported” from Congo. The person died at the Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on May 14.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention had said it is concerned about the risk of further spread due to the proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan.

Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders said it was preparing a “large-scale response” and called the rapid spread of the outbreak “extremely concerning,” according to the Agence France-Presse.

The body of the patient who died in Kampala was later taken back to Congo and no other local case has been confirmed, Uganda’s health ministry said.

On Saturday, people were being screened at the entrance of the Kibuli Muslim Hospital.

Ismail Kigongo, who resides in Kampala, said the new outbreak reminded him of his father, whom he lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I really get scared because I remember burying my father without looking at his body,” he said.

Kenya, Uganda’s neighbor, said Saturday there is only a “moderate risk of importation” of the Ebola virus due to regional travel. Kenya’s government said it has formed an Ebola preparedness team and has strengthened surveillance at all points of entry.

    Logistical challenges complicate outbreak management

Congo often faces logistical challenges in delivering expertise and supplies to affected regions during disease outbreaks.

As Africa’s second-largest country by land area, Congo’s provinces are far from one another and mostly battling conflict. Ituri, for instance, is around 620 miles from the nation’s capital, Kinshasa, and is ravaged by violence from Islamic State-backed militants.

“What we know very well [is] that the country has experience, but the region where it is happening is highly volatile with the humanitarian situation going on and the population moving around from South Sudan to Uganda and other parts,” said Dr. Abdi Rahman Mahamud, World Health Organization director of health emergency alert and response operations, during a news conference Friday.

The disease has so far been confirmed in three health zones in Ituri province, including the capital city, Bunia, and the areas of Rwampara and Mongwalu, where the outbreak is concentrated.

A health official uses a thermometer to screen people in front of Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, Saturday, May 16, 2026. Hajarah Nalwadda via AP

Only 13 blood samples have been tested at the National Institute of Biomedical Research; eight tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain. The remaining five could not be analyzed due to insufficient sample volume, the health minister said.

In Bunia, Ituri’s main city, businesses and regular activities in public places appeared normal on Friday.

Resident Adeline Awekonimungu said she hopes the outbreak is quickly contained. “My recommendation is that the government take this matter seriously and that it takes charge of the hospitals so that this matter can be brought under control,” she said.

    Questions about U.S. response remain

The U.S. has been the single largest external player in Ebola outbreak response in the past, but experts worry the Trump administration’s cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development and its withdrawal of the country from the WHO may impact such efforts.

Spencer said the U.S. does not have the capacity right now to respond quickly to global outbreaks. He suggested to CBS News there may be a connection between the shutdown of USAID and the fact that the latest outbreak was not announced until Friday.

“Before the second Trump administration, USAID would have been on the ground,” Spencer said. “The CDC would have been on the ground at a moment’s notice, maybe even before a moment’s notice, of a new outbreak of Ebola because we were in a bunch of countries. We created relationships beforehand.”

Spencer also pointed to absences in the Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response and other health agencies. However, he said the U.S. is still capable of dealing with the outbreak.

Ebola “is not that great at spreading,” he said, and highlighted the United States’ response to a deadly outbreak of a rare strain of hantavirus aboard a Dutch cruise ship.

“We’ve seen over the past couple weeks with the national quarantine unit we have in Nebraska and the over-a-dozen centers that we have around the U.S. that are capable of taking care of very high consequence pathogens like hantavirus and Ebola,” Spencer said. “These were all commitments that we made as a country, particularly and partly because of cases like my own a decade ago.”

May 16 (Reuters) – The Trump administration on Saturday allowed a sanctions waiver to lapse that had previously allowed countries including India to buy Russian seaborne oil after a month-long extension aimed at easing oil supply shortages and ‌high prices due to Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Reuters Power Up newsletter provides everything you need to know about the global energy industry. Sign up here.

    • U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously said he would not renew the general license allowing the purchase of Russian oil stored on tankers.
    • As of early afternoon Washington time on Saturday, no renewal notice had been posted on the Treasury website. A Treasury spokesperson declined further comment.
    • Two top Democratic U.S. senators, Jeanne Shaheen and Elizabeth Warren, on Friday urged the Trump administration against renewing the waiver, arguing that it was providing revenue to Russia to aid its war in Ukraine, but there was no evidence it was bringing down fuel costs for American consumers.
    • The prior extension was part of the Trump administration’s effort to control global energy prices that have shot higher during the Iran war, including loans from the Strategic ‌Petroleum Reserve and a temporary waiver of a shipping rule known as the Jones Act. In addition, President Donald Trump has said he supported pausing the 18.4-cent-a-gallon federal tax on gasoline.
    • The moves have done little to calm U.S. gasoline prices, which are currently at about $4.50 a gallon, the highest since 2022. Both domestic and international oil prices have hovered around or above $100 per barrel since the war began on February 28.
    • Trump told reporters on Friday returning from Beijing that he had discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping possibly lifting sanctions on Chinese companies that buy Iranian oil and will make a decision soon.
    • India is the top consumer of Russian seaborne crude, and its purchases have been near record highs in April and May following previous sanctions waivers.

Thousands hit London streets for “Unite the Kingdom” march organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson

    May 16, 2026 / 3:37 PM EDT / CBS News

Tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on central London on Saturday for a rally organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, with supporters framing the event as a protest against the erosion of British identity.

Police estimated that around 60,000 people attended the “Unite the Kingdom” march, making it one of the largest right-wing mobilizations seen in Britain in recent years, though smaller than a similar Robinson-led rally last September.

Crowds carrying St. George’s Cross and Union flags marched through central London chanting “we want Starmer out” and “Christ is King.” Some wore red “Make England Great Again” hats, echoing President Trump’s Make America Great Again movement.

People cited a range of reasons for attending, but many described feeling ignored by the government and alarmed by the direction of the country.

Christian imagery was highly visible throughout the demonstration. Protesters carried large wooden crosses, waved crucifixes and some dressed as Knights Templar. Chris Wickland, who described himself as a priest from the Confessing Anglican Church, told CBS News he was there “to represent Christianity,” adding that “something is disappearing from our culture and from our nation … and that was Christianity.”

Another man, draped in an Israeli flag, said he wanted to “bring back Judeo-Christian values to this nation.” He said he was not Jewish or Israeli, but described himself as a British Protestant who believed Israel had “always been an ally to the United Kingdom.”

Others framed their attendance around frustration with the state of public services and national decline. One veteran told CBS News he had “fought for this country” but now felt “the way things are going” made it feel like “a waste of time.” A woman in a wheelchair pointed to the National Health Service, saying waiting times were “getting silly.”

There was also a visible Iranian opposition presence, with some demonstrators waving pre-revolutionary Iranian flags. One Iranian man told CBS News he was there to “stand against all people who want to tear down the country.”

Speaking from a stage in Parliament Square, Robinson urged supporters to become politically active ahead of the next general election.

“If we don’t send a message in our next election, if you don’t register to vote, if you don’t get involved, if you don’t become activists, we are going to lose our country forever,” he told the crowd.

Robinson also praised billionaire Elon Musk for his public support.

“None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for one man. Thank you Elon, on behalf of Great Britain,” Robinson said, prompting thousands in the crowd to chant “Elon.”

At a previous Robinson-led rally in September, Musk appeared by video and urged supporters to “fight back or you die,” while calling for political change in Britain.

Although Robinson stopped short of formally endorsing a political party, he encouraged supporters to engage with movements across the British right, including Reform UK and other nationalist groups.

The demonstration took place on the same day as a large pro-Palestinian Nakba Day march elsewhere in central London, prompting one of the Metropolitan Police’s largest public order operations in recent years amid fears of clashes between rival groups.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused organisers of the Unite the Kingdom rally of “peddling hatred and division,” calling it “a reminder of what we’re up against.” He described some participants as “convicted thugs and racists” while prosecutors warned that antisemitic or racially inflammatory chanting would be pursued.

The Metropolitan Police deployed around 4,000 officers across the capital, alongside mounted police, drones, helicopters and live facial-recognition technology at major transport hubs. Police said officers were working to keep the rival demonstrations separated following heightened tensions after recent antisemitic incidents in London.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Metropolitan Police said 31 people had been arrested across both demonstrations “for a variety of offences,” though the force said the events had so far proceeded “largely without significant incident.” Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman said the policing operation was expected to cost approximately £4.5 million, or nearly $6 million.

At the pro-Palestinian march, one demonstrator told CBS News he found the Unite the Kingdom rally “worrying” and “frightening.”

“I think there’s a propensity for violence amongst people who talk about the need for mass deportations and enemies within,” he said. “A lot of the people at that rally want what’s best for their families, they’re frightened and frustrated and I understand that. But ultimately a lot of them want violence, and that’s frightening.”

Robinson’s profile has also extended beyond Britain. Earlier this year, he visited the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., where he was hosted by senior U.S. official Joe Rittenhouse, who later wrote on X that he was “honored” to welcome the “free speech warrior” to the department.
