Trump administration names Rosario ‘Pete’ Vasquez to serve as next US Border Patrol chief

    June 1, 2026 8:00pm EDT / Fox News

Vasquez will oversee nearly 20,000 agents responsible for securing 7,000 miles of international land borders

Border Patrol chief resigns, praises secure border under Trump

Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks announces his immediate resignation, ending a 37-year career with claims of achieving the ‘most secure border’ in U.S. history under the Trump administration. Banks oversaw the deployment of razor wire and state troopers in Texas. His departure leaves the CBP and ICE operating unfunded, raising questions about future border security efforts.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Trump administration has selected a veteran Border Patrol official with more than 26 years of service to lead the agency following the resignation of former Chief Mike Banks.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Monday that Rosario “Pete” Vasquez will serve as the next chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, overseeing nearly 20,000 agents and professional staff operating across the country.

Vasquez most recently led the Border Patrol’s Blaine Sector in Washington state, overseeing operations along the U.S.-Canada border and coordinating with federal, state, local, tribal and international partners.

CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott praised the appointment, calling Vasquez “a Border Patrol agent’s agent.”

“He has spent more than two decades leading from the front, earning the respect of the workforce, and delivering results in some of the most challenging operational environments in the country,” Scott said in a statement. “He understands what this mission demands because he has lived it. There is no one better suited to lead the United States Border Patrol into its next chapter.”

Vasquez succeeds former Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, who announced his retirement in May after leading the agency during President Donald Trump’s second administration.

Banks told Fox News last month that he was stepping down after helping oversee what he described as a dramatic turnaround in border security.

“I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure, disastrous, chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen,” Banks told Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin at the time. “Time to pass the reins, 37 years, it’s time to enjoy the family and life.”

As chief, Vasquez will be responsible for leading Border Patrol operations across nearly 7,000 miles of international land borders and approximately 2,000 miles of coastal waters.

According to CBP, Vasquez has served in a variety of operational and leadership roles throughout his career, including assignments along the southwest and northern borders, at CBP headquarters and in international postings.

His résumé includes service with the Border Patrol’s Search, Trauma, and Rescue Unit, the agency’s Special Operations Group and CBP’s Office of Anti-Terrorism. He also served as director of the Alliance to Combat Transnational Threats, assistant attaché for CBP in Canada and acting executive director within CBP’s Office of Trade.

The appointment comes as Border Patrol officials continue focusing on efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations, disrupt human smuggling and narcotics trafficking networks and strengthen border security operations.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to serve as chief of the United States Border Patrol, and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me by President Trump, Secretary Mullin, and Commissioner Scott,” Vasquez said. “Our agents have never backed down from a challenge, and neither will I. As chief, my focus is clear: support our agents, strengthen our operational capabilities, and ensure the U.S. Border Patrol remains the most effective border security force in the world.”

Established in 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol is one of the nation’s largest federal law enforcement organizations and serves as the primary agency responsible for securing America’s land borders.

South Carolina store owner acquitted of murder in 2023 killing of Black teen wrongly suspected of shoplifting

    June 1, 2026 9:38 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A South Carolina jury on Monday found a store owner not guilty of murder in the 2023 shooting of a Black 14-year-old.

Chikei Rick Chow, 61, who is Asian, shot Cyrus Carmack-Belton in the back after chasing him from his convenience store in Columbia, but maintained he acted to defend his son. The killing sent waves of anguish and grief through the African American community in Richland County, where nearly half the population is Black.

After the verdict was read, sobs and cries of distress could be heard coming from Carmack-Belton’s family seated in the gallery. Chow sat silently frozen before slowly bowing his head onto his interlocked hands.

Prosecutors and a defense lawyer in closing arguments painted different pictures of the 2023 shooting. Prosecutors said Chow acted in anger because he wrongly thought the teen had stolen four bottles of water from the store. A defense lawyer said Chow fired to defend his son, Andy Chow, only after the teen pointed a gun at him.

“This case is not about a shoplifter. This case is about a father who sees a gun pointed at his son and had to make a decision,” defense attorney Shaun Kent told jurors during closing arguments. The defense attorney said Andy Chow testified that Carmack-Belton pointed a gun at him.

Prosecutors acknowledged Carmack-Belton had a semiautomatic pistol, but they say it fell on the ground during the chase, and he never threatened anyone with it. Prosecutors said Chow chased the teen more than 130 yards from the store.

Solicitor Byron E. Gipson told jurors that Chow “chased a kid down, shot him in the back.”

There was no indication that the teen and Chow had a fight in the store before Carmack-Belton ran away, Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford said at the time. She also confirmed the teen died from a gunshot wound to the right lower back, “consistent with someone who was running away.”

During closing arguments, Gipson placed a bottle of water before the jurors. Gipson said that Chow “at the end of the day, believed that a human is not more than that.”

Gipson said multiple witnesses testified that they didn’t see anything in Carmack-Belton’s hands and didn’t see him point a gun as he ran from the store.

“Nobody testified that happened that doesn’t have the last name Chow,” Gipson said.

The fatal shooting prompted vigils and protests outside the store. Empty water bottles were arranged to spell out “Cyrus” at one 2023 vigil.

Years before the shooting, Chow shot a shoplifter and opened fire on the vehicle of another shoplifter in separate encounters at his Xpress Mart Shell station, CBS News previously reported. Officials said the earlier incidents were cases of self-defense.

Officials said officers responded to hundreds of calls for help at Chow’s store between 2018 and 2023, including calls about assaults, larceny, shoplifting, motor vehicle theft, vandalism, robbery, and burglary.

SANTA FE, N.M., May 26 (Reuters) – New Mexico legislators probing Jeffrey Epstein on Monday said they have issued their first subpoenas, calling for evidence on the late ‌sex offender from 14 entities including federal law enforcement agencies, the state governor’s office and a Santa Fe scientific institute.

The New Mexico Truth Commission, in its second meeting since it was set up in February, also heard testimony from Rachel Benavidez, a survivor of alleged sexual abuse at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch, as well as family members of the late Virginia Giuffre, another survivor.

The commission was established following the Justice Department’s release of millions of Epstein-related files that shed new light on activities at the ranch.

State Representative Andrea Reeb, a member of the bi-partisan committee, said the investigation would seek information on how ‌state and federal agencies failed with regards to Epstein before subpoenaing individuals.

“Let’s say, for example, we decide to pull in the former attorney general, we need to have that information of what their office has in order to properly question them,” Reeb told reporters after the meeting.

Among those the Truth Commission subpoenaed were Deutsche Bank, the FBI, the New Mexico Department of Justice, the New Mexico State Land Commission, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Fe Institute, a scientific foundation in the state’s capitol, according to New Mexico Representative Andrea Romero, chair of the group.

Trump administration signals to GOP congressional leaders it will back off $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund

    2026-06-01T21:55:21.756Z / CNN

The Trump administration has signaled to Republican congressional leaders that it plans to drop the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, though it was unclear how firm or permanent that plan is, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

President Donald Trump has not committed publicly to terminating the controversial pot of money, and a third source familiar with the discussions indicated the administration was merely pausing efforts to pursue the fund — not dropping those plans altogether.

That characterization more closely matches a public statement from the Department of Justice Monday, which said that it would “abide by” a federal court ruling that paused the fund until at least June 12. A fourth source familiar with the matter said Trump himself still believes in the fund, even as he acknowledges vehement pushback to the concept.

Trump himself told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl in a phone call, “We are subject to the courts.”

“At this moment, that’s what it is,” Trump said, adding, “If a court doesn’t allow it, and right now a court has it held up, what can you do?”

The plan to back off the fund for now came after Trump held a lengthy meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson, where the “anti-weaponization” fund was among the topics the two discussed. But it’s unclear if the Trump administration’s message will satisfy GOP lawmakers as fury over the fund has stalled the GOP’s broader agenda.

Republican leaders have been struggling to pass additional funding for immigration enforcement. And on Monday, even Senate Majority Leader John Thune called for the administration to “shut it down themselves,” in regards to the fund. Continued efforts to get that spending legislation over the finish line will almost certainly involve more attempts to kill the “anti-weaponization” fund permanently.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida confirmed to reporters Monday evening that a White House official told him the fund would be “dropped.” He did not say who he spoke to or if the decision to stop pursuing the fund was temporary or permanent.

“I have talked to the White House. What they told me is they’re dropping it,” Scott said.

But other GOP senators weren’t convinced, with some saying they needed more specific and concrete assurances the fund was gone for good.

“If the administration has changed its position on the weaponization fund, it should say so definitively, definitively,” said Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana. “But just saying, ‘We’re going to abide by the court order,’ I mean, I can’t speak for my colleagues, but speaking personally, you’re not talking to Bambi’s baby brother here. Saying you’re going to follow a court order doesn’t tell me anything. You have to follow the court order.”

The federal judge set a hearing for June 12 to hear arguments over whether she should issue a longer pause. Until then, she barred the Justice Department from allocating money to create the fund, considering any claims or distributing any money to applicants.

It’s unclear if the Trump administration will continue fighting for the fund in that hearing.

The controversial fund was created to settle an unprecedented lawsuit Trump brought against the IRS over the unauthorized disclosure of his tax returns years ago. But since its announcement, the fund has faced weeks of unrelenting push back from the president’s own party both in public and in private, with some saying it’s essentially a slush fund to pay out Trump’s allies.

At first, senior Justice Department officials insisted that they wouldn’t change the details of the fund despite pushback from within the GOP, sources told CNN. But congressional Republicans have remained furious, with some allies encouraging the president to scrap it entirely.

And the pause by the Virginia judge wasn’t the only court setback for the fund. A second judge in Florida who oversaw Trump’s initial suit against the IRS ordered the president and others to respond to allegations that he worked in a collusive manner with Justice Department lawyers representing the IRS to reach an out-of-court settlement — in other words, that he defrauded the court.

US agency announces interim guidance on Medicaid work requirements

    2026-06-01 22:24:48 / Reuters

Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Mehmet Oz speaks, after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order about easing restrictions on mental health treatments, including, ibogaine, in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, D.C., April 18, 2026. NEW YORK, June 1 (Reuters) – The U.S. agency that runs the Medicare and Medicaid programs on Monday announced interim guidance on how states should implement new work requirements for Americans enrolled in Medicaid health plans.

The rule announced ‌last year as part of President Donald Trump’s tax cut and spending bill requires 80 hours of work per month to be eligible to receive Medicaid, the health program for low-income Americans.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

Eligibility for enrollees must be verified at least every six months or at plan renewals, but states can choose to conduct checks more frequently.

“These folks are crowding out programs that were originally designed for those truly in need,” said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz.

Oz said the initiative aims to move able-bodied enrollees to employer-sponsored health plans and “free up critical space in the program for our most vulnerable populations.”

Medicaid is jointly funded by state and federal governments, unlike Medicare for older Americans, which is fully federal. States will receive a combined $200 million in grants to support implementation.

U.S. Representative Frank Pallone, a New Jersey Democrat, said the requirements make it more difficult for Americans to receive care.

“People are already struggling to get by as prices on everyday expenses skyrocket, and now millions of Americans will lose their healthcare not because they’re not ‌working, but simply because they got buried in paperwork,” said Pallone in a statement.

The new requirements go into effect January 1, 2027, but a CMS official said before 2028 Medicaid members can self-attest to having met the requirements.

Members who are pregnant, receiving postpartum care, disabled or deemed to be medically frail are exempt from the work rules. Those who have already met work requirements introduced for receiving food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, are also exempt.

Medicaid Director Dan Brillman said the agency aims to conduct real-time verifications by relying on existing electronic data, such as medical claims information.

Beginning in 2028, enrollees will only be able to self-attest once that they have met the new requirements and will have to provide documentation. For those seeking medical exemptions, states must first check health insurance claims history to confirm frailty, a CMS official said.

“We are serious about the consequences of dishonesty in self-attestation,” said Oz. “We will be speaking with different enforcement bodies to make sure that folks know that is not a joke.”

    2026-06-01T21:09:32.800Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/01/politics/kfile-ny-13-darializa-avila-chevalier-deleted-tweets-defund-abolish-police-prisons-deportations

Mamdani-backed congressional candidate deleted posts calling to seize private property, abolish police, borders, prisons

    2026-06-01T21:09:32.800Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/01/politics/kfile-ny-13-darializa-avila-chevalier-deleted-tweets-defund-abolish-police-prisons-deportations

    • A congressional candidate endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani deleted thousands of social media posts.
    • Avila Chevalier told CNN the posts did not reflect who she is today and accused her opponent of living in the past.
    • The primary on June 23 has become a closely watched proxy battle between establishment and democratic-socialist Democrats.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist congressional candidate endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, deleted a previous Twitter account that included thousands of posts and reposts expressing support for abolishing police, prisons and borders, as well as seizing private property and nationalizing major industries and calling into question Israel’s right to exist.

Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old investigator at a public defender’s office in New York City and doctoral student, has emerged as one of the most prominent left-wing challengers in the country after Mamdani endorsed her bid to unseat longtime Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

But the posts from her since-deleted account from over the last decade have drawn scrutiny amid her high-profile challenge of Espaillat, a five-term incumbent and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. That primary, scheduled for June 23, has become a closely watched proxy battle between the Democratic Party’s establishment and its ascendant democratic-socialist wing, with Mamdani’s endorsement last week elevating the race’s national profile.

While reports in the New York Post and Politico previously highlighted several deleted social media posts in which Avila Chevalier criticized police, Israel and Democratic politicians, a CNN KFile review of hundreds of deleted posts and reposts found ones that called for abolishing police, prisons and borders; tweets about communism; calls for open borders and zero deportations; and expletive-laden attacks on Democrats.

In a statement to CNN, Avila Chevalier said the posts did not reflect who she is today and accused Espaillat of trying to distract from issues facing the district.

“My opponent wants to live in the past. He is re-litigating social media posts from half a decade ago, and continuing to champion an outdated politics that fails to serve our people,” Avila Chevalier said. “I have grown considerably since in the years since these tweets, and I am focused on our community and our community’s future.”

In another statement provided to CNN, Mayor Mamdani reiterated his support for Avila Chevalier’s citing her work advocating for immigrants and working-class New Yorkers.

“In Congress, she’ll take on corporate greed, bad landlords, and D.C.’s broken political system. At a time when power is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, Darializa will fight in Congress for New York City’s working families. She’s the champion we need for a city New Yorkers can actually afford.”

The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine saved more than 3,600 tweets from Avila Chevalier’s account between 2018–2022. It’s unclear when the account was deleted but the last archived tweet is from May 2022.

In August 2020, Avila Chevalier reposted a tweet responding to a social media prompt that asked, “Israel suddenly disappears, your third emoji is your reaction.” The reposted tweet replied, “Trick question – Israel doesn’t exist!”

“A world without borders—just like a world without prisons or police—is possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward,” read one deleted repost from September 2021.

During a three-day period in September 2021, Avila Chevalier also reposted now-deleted messages declaring, “Yes, literally, abolish the border” and that “all deportation is wrong.”

Her Twitter profile biography also at one point included the phrase “how communist of you,” the hashtags “#BlackLivesMatter” and “#FreePalestine,” and described her location as “Occupied Lenape Land” and later “Lenapehoking (NYC)” — an acknowledgment to Indigenous claims to New York City.

Her current campaign account lists “Manhattan, NY.”

During the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, Avila Chevalier reposted a message calling for a sweeping government takeover of large parts of the economy. The repost advocated nationalizing utilities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies; suspending rent and mortgage payments; dissolving private health insurance companies; and “seiz[ing] all properties from landlords.”

Other deleted posts and reposts included references to communism and anti-capitalist politics. In one April 2020 post, Avila Chevalier wrote that while most of the political theory she had read was communist, “the pyromania associated with anarchism is very intriguing to me,” adding a laughing emoji.

“Seize the means of production,” she wrote in a since-deleted 2019 post, the phrase commonly associated with Marxism.

The deleted posts also included repeated calls for abolishing police.

During the nationwide protests in 2020 following the killing of George Floyd, Avila Chevalier responded to a user asking what a better slogan would be than “defund the police,” by posting, “F**k you. We’re gonna defund and abolish. You don’t get to water down our movements.”

Two days later, Avila Chevalier rejected an argument that abolishing police meant ending policing only “as we know it.”

“No. It means ending policing full stop. Period. No more police at all ever,” she replied, adding several clap emojis.

In another deleted post, she captioned a selfie showing her wearing a face mask with the slogan “Defund Police.”

“Felt cute. F**k 12,” she wrote, referring to a slang word for the police.

She also reposted a message stating, “In New York they don’t say ‘I love you,’ they say ‘NYPD suck my dick’ and I think that’s beautiful.”

In another repost from 2021 she shared a message declaring that “ALL PIGS EVERYWHERE ARE HARAM,” an Arabic term used in Islam to describe something that is forbidden. Avila Chevalier is a Muslim-convert.

The deleted posts also reflected hostility toward prominent Democrats couched in profane terms after Bernie Sanders ended his 2020 presidential campaign.

“This is for 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐍𝐂 u big 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 white nasty 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐨 bitch why u took 𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐞 off the muhfuckin 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 with ur trifflin dirty 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 ass u 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 ass bitc,” read an April 2020 repost.
