Maduro’s lawyer says U.S. blocking Venezuelan government from paying ousted leader’s legal fees

    2026-02-25T22:27:00-0500 / CBS/AP

The Trump administration is blocking Venezuela’s government from paying for the cost of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s defense against drug trafficking charges in New York, a move that potentially interferes with his constitutional right to counsel, his lawyer says.

Attorney Barry Pollack told a Manhattan federal judge in an email dated Feb. 20 that the U.S. Treasury Department had blocked the authorization of legal fees that the government of Venezuela is required to pay for Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores under its law and custom. The email was entered into the public court record on Wednesday.

Maduro and his wife have been jailed in New York without bail since they were seized from their Venezuelan home Jan. 3 in a stealth nighttime raid by U.S. military forces. They have both pleaded not guilty. Maduro is scheduled to return to federal court for a hearing on March 17.

In the email, Pollack said that the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which administers sanctions against Venezuela, had granted permission on Jan. 9 approving the payment of legal fees by the Venezuelan government.

Less than three hours later, though, the Trump administration snatched back the authorization “without explanation,” though it left in place a license granting permission for Maduro’s wife’s lawyers to be paid, Pollack said.

The dispute over Maduro’s legal fees is intimately linked to U.S. foreign policy. The first Trump administration cut ties with Maduro in 2019, recognizing the then-opposition head of the National Assembly as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. The Biden administration hewed closely to the same policy.

Messages seeking comment from the Treasury Department, White House and the Justice Department were not immediately returned.

Allowing the government of Maduro’s replacement,Delcy Rodríguez, his vice president and now Venezuela’s acting president, to pay for the cost of Maduro’s defense could complicate prosecutors’ efforts in court to counter the deposed leader’s argument that his capture was illegal and that as the foreign head of a state he is immune from prosecution under U.S. and international law.

Pollack said he asked the Office of Foreign Assets Control on Feb. 11 to reinstate the original license and clear the way for Venezuela to meet its obligation to pay Maduro’s defense costs.

“The government of Venezuela has an obligation to pay Mr. Maduro’s fees, Mr. Maduro has a legitimate expectation that the government of Venezuela would do so, and Mr. Maduro cannot otherwise afford counsel,” Pollack wrote in the letter.

Pollack said the U.S. was “interfering with Mr. Maduro’s ability to retain counsel and, therefore, his right under the Sixth Amendment to counsel of his choice.”

A 25-page indictment against Maduro accused him and others of working with drug cartels and members of the military to facilitate the shipment of thousands of tons of cocaine into the U.S. Both he and his wife face life in prison if convicted.

As part of the purported conspiracy, Maduro and his wife allegedly ordering kidnappings, beatings and murders of those who owed them drug money, according to the indictment. It said that included the killing of a local drug boss in Caracas.

Maduro’sstunning capturefollowing a monthslong military buildup in the Caribbean has paved the way for the Trump administration to assert enormous influence over Rodriguez.

Under pressure from the U.S., Rodriguez has moved swiftly to open upVenezuela’s oil industry toAmerican investment, freepolitical prisoners and reestablish direct communications with Washington — something unseen since the first Trump administration shuttered the U.S. embassy in Caracas in 2019. President Trumpsaid Tuesdaythe U.S. had received more than 80 million barrels of oil from “new friend and partner” Venezuela.

Near-blind refugee found dead in Buffalo after release by US Border Patrol

    February 26, 2026 3:00 AM UTC / Reuters

Feb 25 (Reuters) – A nearly blind refugee from Myanmar missing since his release from a Buffalo jail into the custody of U.S. Border Patrol has been found dead on a downtown street, city authorities said on Wednesday.

Police officers in the upstate New York city located the body of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, 56, on Tuesday evening, a Buffalo Police Department spokesperson said.

Shah Alam had been missing since February 19, when U.S. Border Patrol agents dropped him off at a coffee shop miles from his home following his release from a county jail, where he had spent much of the last year awaiting trial on criminal charges that resulted in a misdemeanor plea deal.

Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances of Shah Alam’s death, the spokesperson said.

Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan, a Democrat, said in a statement Wednesday that Shah Alam’s death was preventable and the result of “inhumane” decision-making by federal immigration authorities.

“A vulnerable man − nearly blind and unable to speak English − was left alone on a cold winter night with no known attempt to leave him in a safe, secure location,” Ryan said. “That decision from U.S. Customs and Border Protection was unprofessional and inhumane.”

A CBP spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a statement to Investigative Post, a Buffalo-based news outlet, a CBP spokesperson said agents dropped Shah Alam off at a coffee shop after agents determined he had entered the country as a refugee and could not be deported.

“Border Patrol agents offered him a courtesy ride, which he chose to accept to a coffee shop, determined to be a warm, safe location near his last known address, rather than be released directly from the Border Patrol station,” the agency said. “He showed no signs of distress, mobility issues or disabilities requiring special assistance.”

Temperatures in Buffalo, a city near the Canadian border, were below freezing last weekend.

The Erie County District Attorney’s Office said Shah Alam was arrested a year ago following an incident that resulted in minor injuries to two Buffalo Police officers. Shah Alam was released on bail this month after he had agreed to a plea deal, the district attorney’s office said.

Following Shah Alam’s arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued an immigration detainer, a formal request to take custody of a noncitizen after his scheduled release from criminal detention.

In response to that immigration detainer, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office contacted U.S. Border Patrol prior to Shah Alam’s release, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.

Mohamad Faisal, one of Shah Alam’s children, said in a text message that his father’s arrest a year ago was due to a misunderstanding with police officers.

Shah Alam, who did not speak English, had been out for a walk and had been using a curtain rod he purchased as a walking stick, Faisal said.

Shah Alam got lost and walked onto the property of a Buffalo resident who called the police, Faisal said. When Shah Alam did not understand police commands to drop his curtain rod, they arrested him, his son said.

Upon his release last week, “Nobody told me or my family or attorney where my dad was dropped off,” Faisal said.

Shah Alam did not read, write or use electronic devices, Faisal said.

Shah Alam only wanted to “eat home-cooked food” and “be united with the rest of [his] family,” Faisal said.

The family are Arakan Rohingya refugees, he said.

Democrat accuses Justice Department of withholding documents on Trump Epstein accusation

WASHINGTON, Feb 25 (Reuters) – A top Democrat in Congress accused the Justice Department on Wednesday of withholding FBI interview records with a woman who accused President Donald Trump of sexually abusing her as a minor.

Representative Robert Garcia, the senior Democrat on the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, said he had confirmed media reports that the Justice Department withheld more than 50 pages of material related to the woman’s claims from more than 3 million documents it released related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

He said the withheld material showed that the FBI took the allegations seriously and interviewed the woman four times but only released the first interview, which did not detail her accusations against Trump.

“The fact that DOJ is suppressing documents alleging President Trump’s commission of sexual abuse of an underage victim only heightens my genuine concerns about a White House cover-up,” Garcia wrote in a letter to the department.

The Justice Department said it is reviewing whether any of its remaining Epstein-related documents were improperly withheld, and said they would be published if appropriate.

DOJ has warned that some of the material it has released includes unfounded accusations and sensationalist claims against Trump.

The department also says it has withheld material that could compromise the identity of Epstein’s victims or jeopardize ongoing investigations.

Documents released by the Justice Department include photos of Trump with several women whose faces are redacted and a suggestive note to Epstein, framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appears to bear Trump’s signature.

Evidence and testimony submitted in the 2021 trial of Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell indicate Trump traveled on Epstein’s plane multiple times. Epstein wrote in one email that Trump “knew about the girls,” though it is not clear what he meant.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said Trump had been “totally exonerated on anything relating to Epstein.”

Trump socialized extensively with Epstein in the 1990s and 2000s, but has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, and says he broke off ties before the financier’s 2008 conviction on solicitation of a minor for prostitution. Trump denies ever flying on Epstein’s plane and has said the suggestive note was faked.

Trump says Muslim lawmakers Omar, Tlaib should be removed from US after speech clash

    February 25, 2026 10:46 PM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 25 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said Wednesday that two Muslim Democratic U.S. Representatives, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, should be “institutionalized” and sent back to “where they came from,” a day after they had a heated exchange with him during his State of the Union address.

During Trump’s speech on Tuesday, Tlaib, a Palestinian American, and Omar, a Somali American, criticized Trump as he touted his administration’s hard-line immigration crackdown and its immigration enforcement actions.

Both Omar and Tlaib shouted “you’re killing Americans” at Trump during his speech, with Omar also calling him a “liar.”

In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump said the two lawmakers “had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized.”

“We should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible,” Trump added. Both Omar and Tlaib are U.S. citizens.

House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries cast Trump’s rhetoric against Tlaib and Omar as “xenophobic” and “disgraceful.” Tlaib said on X that Trump’s comments showed “he is crashing out.”

Muslim advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations also said Trump’s comments were racist.

“It’s racist and bigoted to say two Muslim U.S. lawmakers should be sent to the country they were born in or where their ancestors came from based on their criticism of the gunning down of Americans by ICE,” CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that members of the media have “smeared” the president as a racist.

Trump’s immigration enforcement actions were criticized following two separate January fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minnesota. At least eight people have died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers since the start of 2026, following at least 31 deaths last year.

During his Tuesday speech, Trump reiterated his accusation that Somali communities in the U.S. have engaged in fraud and claimed that “Somali pirates” had ransacked Minnesota. His administration had used fraud allegations to deploy armed federal immigration agents in Minnesota.

Trump has cast his actions as aiming to tackle fraud and improve domestic security.

Rights groups say the crackdown has created a fearful environment and that Trump has used isolated fraud cases as an excuse to target immigrants. They also dismiss Trump’s ability to tackle fraud, citing pardons from him to those who have faced fraud convictions in the past.

Trump also recently faced criticism after his social media account posted a video that contained a racist depiction of former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.
