Trump privately lashes out at GOP lawmakers over racist video blowback, sources say

    PUBLISHED Feb 13, 2026, 6:13 PM ET / CNN

Hours after refusing to apologize for a racist video posted to his Truth Social account, President Donald Trump hadn’t let go.

He spent last weekend complaining to allies about Republicans who had condemned the video depicting the Obamas as apes, questioning the lawmakers’ loyalty and vowing consequences, sources familiar with his comments told CNN.

The president railed against South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott — the sole Black Republican senator and chair of the Senate GOP’s campaign arm — throughout the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, arguing one of his top congressional allies was out of line to call his White House racist, the sources said.

“The president felt he could’ve handled that matter privately,” a senior Trump administration official told CNN of Scott. “He was like, ‘We work together all the time. He didn’t need to comment publicly.’”

Trump had even stronger words for Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, one of the sources recalled, using expletives to denounce her and declaring that she was dead to him.

Britt’s office slammed that account as “fake news” and touted her strong working relationship with the president, while the White House praised her as “an incredible ally” whom the president has “great respect” for. Scott’s office declined to comment.

But the episode, which marks one of the starkest GOP breaks from the president ahead of the 2026 midterms, also reflects how such moments have frustrated the commander in chief.

The White House’s removal of the video, which it had initially defended last week, came nearly 12 hours after it had been online — and only after the blowback from some top Republicans.

Just days later, a handful of GOP lawmakers bucked Trump on a key tariff vote, prompting him to threaten that anyone who votes against his signature economic policy will “suffer the consequences” in primaries. And late last year, Trump, under GOP pressure, was forced to back a vote to compel the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files — an issue he has said the country should move on from.

The White House argued that Trump remains “the unequivocal leader” of the GOP, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying in a statement that he’s “committed to ensuring Republicans remain united against the Democrats who, if given the chance, will destroy our country again through open borders, allowing non-citizens to vote in elections, and horrific economic policy.”

    Getting Trump’s attention

But last Friday morning, it was Republican lawmakers trying to set the tone for their party by forcefully speaking out against Trump’s late night post.

As the video was first gaining traction, Scott — who speaks to the president regularly — privately reached out, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. Unable to get ahold of him, he took to X.

“Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House. The President should remove it,” the senator wrote.

That got Trump’s attention. He later called Scott — with whom he has a close personal relationship — and told the South Carolina Republican he was planning to have his team remove the post. Just before noon, the White House said a staffer had erroneously posted the video and it was deleted. As he flew to Mar-a-Lago that night, Trump told reporters he hadn’t seen the final frames of the video depicting the Obamas and blamed an unnamed staffer for posting it. “I didn’t make a mistake,” he said.

The president, as well as many of Trump’s top advisers, have privately asserted that Scott’s response is what led to the story gaining nationwide attention, the sources said.

But Scott was hardly alone in condemning the video. Britt, who’s working closely with the White House to try to fund the Department of Homeland Security, applauded the post’s removal last week, saying it “should have never been posted to begin with, and is not who we are as a nation.”

The open criticism caught the attention of far-right activist Laura Loomer, who presented Trump with printouts of the lawmakers’ statements, one of the sources familiar said. Loomer, who has previously succeeded in riling up the president over critical comments made by his perceived allies, posted on X that she was “compiling a list” of Republicans who “attacked” Trump with “false accusations of racism.”

Notably, some of the senators Trump and Loomer were furious with — including Scott and Britt — were also in Palm Beach that weekend for the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s winter retreat. Trump did not meet with the group, but he did invite a select few — such as Sens. Eric Schmitt and Lindsey Graham, who had not criticized him over the video — to join him for golf and attend his Super Bowl party.

Britt’s office defended her support for Trump in a statement.

“This is classic fake news by CNN. Senator Britt has a 100% voting record with President Trump and remains one of his strongest allies in the Senate. Just this week, Senator Britt had a tremendous conversation with President Trump about her leadership as she fights to defend our incredible ICE officers, pass the SAVE America Act, and advance the president’s policies to make America affordable again. Any narrative suggesting otherwise is not only misleading, it is flat out false,” the statement said.

Trump says he hasn’t punished anyone

While Trump had harsh words for Republicans who spoke out against him, he’s been less critical of the unnamed staffer whom the White House blamed for the debacle, telling reporters on Thursday that he has no plans to discipline the person.

The president often posts personally on Truth Social — particularly late at night and early in the morning — and he often personally re-posts others’ posts, sources familiar with his social media use previously told CNN.

But a few close aides — including Natalie Harp, who will sometimes type out posts that are dictated to her, and Dan Scavino, a deputy chief of staff who ran Trump’s social media accounts during his first term — also have access. Harp and Scavino were spotted on Sunday sitting beside the president during his Super Bowl party. Harp also boarded Marine One with the president on Friday as he traveled to Fort Bragg.

“No, I haven’t [taken action against them],” Trump said Thursday, without naming anyone. “That was a video on, as you know, voter fraud, a fairly long video, and they had a little piece, and it had to do with the Lion King. It’s been very well, it’s been shown all over the place long before that was posted.”

Arizona sheriff in Nancy Guthrie search defends sending DNA to Florida lab

    2026-02-13T18:10:00-0500 / CBS News

An Arizona sheriff defended sending evidence in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, to a lab in Florida for DNA testing over the FBI’s lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos also said the results that investigators have received from DNA testing so far haven’t led to a suspect. Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was forcibly taken from her Tucson home during the middle of the night nearly two weeks ago.

Nanos told CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti in an interview Friday that his agency has been sending evidence to a Florida lab for years, and he doesn’t want samples sent to two different facilities.

“It adds a step that’s not needed,” Nanos said. “If you have two labs you’re looking at, and one’s bad or one’s better, that’s fine. That’s not the case here, nobody’s saying that.”

Nanos said the Florida lab has samples taken from the Guthrie family and people who have worked at Nancy Guthrie’s home to compare against the evidence that has been gathered during the investigation.

“Let’s just use one lab, they have it all, the reports are generated, those reports are shared between both agencies, and we keep moving,” Nanos said.

The sheriff didn’t provide details about what results investigators have gotten back from the lab amid the ongoing investigation.

“We did get some DNA back, and we are looking at all those things,” Nanos said.

Asked if the results have led to a suspect, Nanos said, “Boy, I wish it did. Not yet. We’ve got DNA, and it’s still working, that’s all I can tell you.”

DNA that wasn’t Nancy Guthrie’s or that of those in close contact with her was collected from the property, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in an update Friday afternoon. Investigators are working to identify who it belongs to. The department isn’t disclosing where the DNA was found on the property.

Meanwhile, while Nanos said they haven’t received proof of life, he also added that “there has been no sign of death.” When asked if the suspect should be afraid, he responded: “I think the suspect should be afraid every night. We’re going to find you.”

The FBI released a description Thursday of a person it referred to as a suspect who was seen on video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s Nest home security camera on the morning of her disappearance.

The bureau described the individual as a male who is about 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall with an average build. In the footage, the person is wearing a ski mask, gloves and what the FBI said was a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.

CBS News has learned the backpack is sold exclusively at Walmart. Sources with knowledge of the investigation told CBS News that law enforcement officials reviewed video at one Walmart location in Tucson. CBS News reached out to Walmart corporate offices, but a spokesperson declined to comment.

The FBI says the masked figure seen on Nancy Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera was carrying a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack like the one seen at right. FBI

In addition to the description, the FBI doubled its reward to up to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie’s location or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance. Guthrie was also added to the bureau’s list of its most wanted missing persons.

Investigators have issued a wider call for video footage from Guthrie’s neighbors. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department asked people who live within 2 miles of her home to provide authorities with all footage of vehicles, people or anything that seems out of the ordinary from New Year’s Day to Feb. 2, the day after Guthrie was reported missing.

Investigators recently found a pair of black gloves that are being tested for DNA, sources close to the investigation confirmed to CBS News. Nanos told CBS News on Friday that the gloves have been sent out for testing.

In its update Friday, the sheriff’s department said “several” gloves have been found during the investigation, and that the closest gloves were found about 2 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home. A glove seen in images from the New York Post resembles those seen in the security camera footage authorities released earlier this week.

The FBI said Wednesday that agents were conducting an “extensive search” along multiple roadways in the Catalina Foothills area where Guthrie lives.

On Thursday, Savannah Guthrie posted a message to social media featuring clips of a family home movie when her mom was younger, writing, “We will never give up on her.”

Senators urge Trump to scrap social media vetting for foreign tourists

    February 13, 2026 7:07 PM UTC / Reuters / By David Shepardson

WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) – Two Democratic senators urged the Trump administration on Friday to abandon a proposal to require millions of foreign visitors to provide social media handles used over the past five years.

The proposed policy from U.S. Customs and Border Protection would require travelers from countries in the visa waiver program to submit the social media data.

“By requiring travelers to disclose their personal social media information, CBP will force people who simply want to visit family in the United States, conduct business with U.S. companies, or attend events such as the upcoming World Cup to submit to sweeping digital surveillance,” said Senators Ed Markey and Ron Wyden.

“No doubt many Americans would be outraged if countries such as Great Britain, France, or Australia imposed a similar policy on American tourists.”

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment. In December, the department said the proposal could take effect as early as this month.

Earlier, a group representing the U.S. travel and tourism industry warned the proposal could have a “chilling effect” on visits to the United States. “If we get this policy wrong, millions of travelers could take their business and the billions of dollars they spend elsewhere, only making America weaker,” the U.S. Travel Association said.

Applicants for immigrant and non-immigrant visas have been required to share that information since 2019.

Washington has taken steps to tighten vetting of foreigners, stemming from a Trump executive order issued in January 2025 calling for visitors to the U.S. to be “vetted and screened to the maximum degree.”

The visa waiver program allows travelers from 42 countries, mostly in Europe, to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. They must complete an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) form, which under the change would require social media handles.

The U.S. is considering requiring all email addresses used over the last 10 years and names, birth dates, residences and birthplaces of parents, siblings, children and spouses.

The U.S. State Department in December said it was requiring all H-1B applicants and their dependents to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to “public” in order for the department to review social media posts by applicants.

US releases $30 million of frozen New York tunnel funding

    • Summary
    • Court orders release of $205 million for Hudson Tunnel Project
    • Justice Department to release $30 million immediately, remainder soon
    • Senator Cory Booker vows to prevent further project interruptions

Feb 13 (Reuters) – The Trump administration on Friday released $30 million of $205 million in frozen federal funding for the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel Project in New York after New York and New Jersey sued to challenge the decision.

The two states had sought an emergency hearing after raising concerns the U.S. Department of Transportation was not committing to release the funds.

The Reuters Inside Track newsletter is your essential guide to the biggest events in global sport. Sign up here.

A U.S. appeals court on Thursday declined to undo a lower court order requiring the funding, which had been frozen in October and forced the project to halt construction last week.

The Gateway Development Commission said it received the initial $30 million “and expect to receive the full $205 million in reimbursement funds. Construction remains paused for now, and we are working with our contractors to plan how to deploy these funds in the most effective way and get workers back on the job to resume some construction as soon as possible.”

Judge Jeannette Vargas last week ordered the federal government to release funds for the project to overhaul critical rail infrastructure in New York and New Jersey, which had been frozen by Republican President Donald Trump since October 1.

At a hearing, Justice Department said they were working to release the remainder of the $205 million in the coming days. Vargas ordered the government to file a report on Tuesday on the status of the funding.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey called the announcement good news but said he would fight “until the Trump administration guarantees no more interruptions to building this vital infrastructure.”

The halt to construction triggered last week by the funding freeze put 1,000 workers out of work.

Trump offered last month to unfreeze the funds, a source said, in return for support from Democrats to rename Washington Dulles Airport and New York’s Penn Station after him. Democrats strongly criticized the suggestion.

The Hudson Tunnel Project aims to build a new commuter rail tunnel connecting Manhattan and New Jersey and repair a century-old tunnel used by more than 200,000 travelers and 425 trains daily. Vargas handed down her ruling hours after New York and New Jersey said construction would halt for lack of funding.

The existing Hudson Tunnel, heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, needs frequent emergency repairs that disrupt travel on the nation’s most heavily used passenger rail line.

The project was allocated about $15 billion in federal support under then-President Joe Biden, a Democrat. Nearly $2 billion has been spent so far.

Trump tells troops ‘fear’ is powerful motivator in difficult Iran talks

    February 13, 2026 7:53 PM UTC / Reuters

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina, Feb 13 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump told U.S. troops on Friday that Iran has been “difficult” in nuclear negotiations and suggested that instilling fear in Tehran may be necessary to resolve the standoff peacefully.

“They’ve been difficult to make a deal,” Trump said of the Iranians before an audience of active-duty soldiers at Fort Bragg Army base in North Carolina after U.S. officials said they were sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East.

“Sometimes you have to have fear. That’s the only thing that really will get the situation taken care of.”

During his address Trump also referenced the U.S. bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites last June.

Earlier, he said the deployment of the world’s largest aircraft carrier was being made so “we’ll have it ready” should negotiations with Iran fail.

Oman facilitated talks between Iran and the U.S. last week, which a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said had allowed Tehran to gauge Washington’s seriousness and showed enough consensus for diplomacy to continue. The date and venue of the next round of U.S.-Iran talks have yet to be announced.

The president traveled to Fort Bragg to meet special forces troops involved in the audacious January 3 operation to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro, who faces narco-terrorism and drug trafficking charges in U.S. court, denies wrongdoing and maintains he is the rightful leader of Venezuela. In the weeks since the Venezuelan leader’s capture, Trump has worked with Maduro’s interim successor Delcy Rodriguez and sought broad control over the country’s oil industry.

Fort Bragg is home to some 50,000 active-duty soldiers. It also sits in one of the country’s more competitive political states.

North Carolina is expected to host closely fought races for both the Senate and House of Representatives in November’s congressional election. The state will be one of the biggest prizes in the 2028 presidential election.

During the visit, Trump broke with presidential norms and delivered an openly political speech to the troops, blasting his political opponents and warning that Democrats would undermine the military if they won control of Congress in the elections.

Trump’s public approval ratings have slid since his January 2025 inauguration, with voters mainly concerned about the high cost of living. Aides have said the president will eventually travel weekly to competitive states to speak with voters.

Medical groups urge US judge to block vaccine policy shifts under RFK Jr

    February 13, 2026 9:16 PM UTC / Reuters

    • Summary
    • Kennedy replaced all 17 experts on key vaccine panel
    • CDC’s new schedule reduces recommended childhood vaccines to 11
    • Judge Murphy faces tight timeline for decision

BOSTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) – Major U.S. medical groups urged a judge on Friday to block the Trump administration from implementing new guidance cutting the number of vaccines routinely recommended for children and bar Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s handpicked vaccine advisory panel from holding its next meeting.

Lawyers for the American Academy of Pediatrics and other groups told U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston that health officials acted unlawfully to fulfill Kennedy’s goals by upending national immunization policies in ways that would harm public health and reduce vaccination rates.

“This is a clear and present danger to public health,” said James Oh, a lawyer for the groups.

He said the “most egregious” action taken under the watch of Kennedy, a long-time vaccine skeptic, was when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on January 5 issued a new immunization schedule that cut the number of routinely recommended childhood vaccinations to 11 and downgraded six others.

Oh said that decision, which removed the broad recommendation for childhood vaccines for diseases including rotavirus, influenza and hepatitis A, “set off alarms” in the medical community and occurred without any rational explanation from the agency.

Instead of a recommendation, the CDC said parents should consult healthcare providers under what it calls shared clinical-decision-making, and said insurance providers would continue to cover the costs of the shots.

Oh said the decision occurred after Kennedy last year removed and replaced all 17 independent experts on a key panel whose recommendations shape vaccine practices.

He urged the judge to prevent that panel, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, from holding its February 26-27 meeting. Oh said it is now dominated by people aligned with Kennedy’s anti-vaccine views, in violation of the Federal Advisory Committee Act’s mandates that it be fairly balanced and free of inappropriate influence.

Murphy, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, appeared open to arguments the panel was unlawfully constituted and asked whether he could consider the “broader public health impacts” of the vaccine policy changes.

U.S. Department of Justice lawyer Isaac Belfer told him HHS was not pursuing an anti-vaccine agenda and welcomed “spirited debate about vaccine policy.” But he said it had broad authority to change policy to address a decline in public trust in vaccines following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The court cannot substitute its judgment in place of the agency,” Belfer said.

Murphy did not immediately rule but, with the meeting upcoming, said he “must make a decision in this case on an uncomfortably tight timeline.”

Feb 13 (Reuters) – Two federal officers appear to have lied about the events that led up to the shooting of a Venezuelan immigrant in Minneapolis last month, acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons said Friday.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave and the U.S. Attorney’s office is investigating the false statements, Lyons said.

    image

Virginia high court clears way for congressional redistricting vote, boosting Democrats

    February 13, 2026 7:35 PM UTC / Reuters

    By Joseph Ax

Feb 13 (Reuters) – The Virginia Supreme Court said on Friday it would allow a Democratic-backed redistricting effort to head to a voter referendum in April, potentially paving the way for the party to flip as many as four Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives this fall.

A state judge last month blocked the Democrats’ redistricting effort, ruling that lawmakers had used an invalid process to advance it. In agreeing to hear Democrats’ appeal of that ruling on Friday, the high court also said an April 21 special election could move ahead in the meantime.

While the court could still rule against the redistricting plan in the future, the decision to let the referendum proceed was a victory for Democrats, who have proposed a new House map that would give them the advantage in 10 of the state’s 11 districts. Currently, Democrats control six seats.

The battle in Virginia is part of a broader nationwide redistricting war that was triggered last summer, when President Donald Trump successfully urged his fellow Republicans in Texas to approve a new map targeting five Democratic seats.

Since then, both Democratic and Republican states have advanced new maps, with neither party emerging as a clear winner just yet. Redistricting typically occurs only at the start of each decade after the U.S. Census is completed.

Democrats have to flip only three Republican-held seats in November’s midterm elections to win a House majority.

Virginia’s constitution gives an independent commission the authority to draw congressional lines, forcing Democratic lawmakers to undertake a multi-step process to approve a constitutional amendment and seek voter approval before they can install a new map.
