Stowaway with 524 pounds of cocaine and a gun found on barge off Puerto Rico, Coast Guard says

    June 12, 2026 / 9:55 AM EDT / CBS News

A stowaway with more than 500 pounds of cocaine and a gun was found on board a barge off the coast of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday, marking the second time this year that authorities detained a stowaway holding a huge stash of drugs in the same harbor.

Crewmembers from two Coast Guard Cutters joined forces with a Homeland Security task force to apprehend the stowaway after boarding the Crimson Clover barge in the San Juan Harbor on Tuesday, officials said in a news release. During the operation, officers located a stowaway who was in possession of a firearm and nine bales of cocaine weighing approximately 237.75 kilograms, or about 524 pounds.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Isaac Mayo later met with law enforcement partners at Coast Guard Base San Juan, and took custody of the alleged drug smuggler, the weapon and the cocaine, which was estimated to have a street value of $4.8 million. Authorities have not identified the suspect.

The Coast Guard released images of the barge, the alleged drugs and officers hauling the bales onto the shore.

“A collective pool of experience and available assets led to a safe boarding and a discovery of cocaine aboard the barge, which further deters smuggling organizations from exploiting incoming commercial vessels to conduct human and drug trafficking activities within our area of responsibility,” Lt. Cmdr. Ross Markham said in a statement.

The arrest and seizure comes amid ramped up efforts by the U.S. to target drug trafficking and human smuggling in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. In addition to routine Coast Guard interceptions of narcotics on the open seas, the Trump administration has continued a monthslong campaign of military strikes on alleged drug-running boats, killing more than 200 people.

In February, a stowaway was arrested after he was allegedly found floating in a Puerto Rican harbor with 789 pounds of cocaine. The Coast Guard recovered the suspect from the water, as well as 10 bales of contraband wrapped in brown bags.

The month after that, authorities seized cocaine worth an estimated $12 million from a boat off the island’s north coast.

Inkfish

Goblin shark seen alive in natural habitat for the first time: “The most iconic of all the deep-sea sharks”

    2026-06-12T10:16:00-0400 / CBS News

    By Mark Osborne

    Updated on: June 12, 2026 / 10:18 AM EDT / CBS News

Marine biologist Alan Jamieson had given up on seeing a goblin shark in its underwater home. After all, they live thousands of feet underwater in total darkness and since being discovered over 100 years ago, had only been observed when caught by fishermen and brought to the surface.

But that changed two years ago when exploring the Pacific Ocean’s Tonga Trench — the second-deepest point on Earth — with a remote, baited camera.

“The Goblin Shark is one of these deep-sea charismatic animals that I never thought we’d see alive, and then to do so was amazing, but to then learn that colleagues in Hawai’i also saw one was just incredible,” Jamieson, the founding director at Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Center, said in a press release accompanying a study released this week on not one, but two sightings of the elusive deep-sea creature.

Researchers with the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Center found video of a deep-sea goblin shark in its natural environment in 2024 in the Pacific Ocean’s Tonga Trench. Minderoo-University of Western Australia Deep-Sea Research Center and Inkfish

The study, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, details two observations of the goblin shark on camera.

The first came in 2019, but no one even knew it at the time. In speaking with colleagues at the Deep-Sea Animal Research Center, study author Aaron Judah learned a 2019 Ocean Exploration Trust expedition on the M/V Nautilus — the underwater exploration ship owned by Robert Ballard, who found the wreck of the Titanic — might have seen a goblin shark on camera.

In looking back through the video, Judah hit the jackpot. The shark was spotted when exploring extremely remote areas of the Pacific near locations like Jarvis Island and the Palmyra Atoll.

“Seeing the most iconic of all the deep-sea sharks alive and looking healthy in its natural habitat is a unique honour,” Judah, a researcher in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, said in a statement of the two discoveries. “I was also very surprised about how deep this species was found. The observation from the slope of the Tonga Trench is nearly 700 meters deeper than this species was known to live.”

In other words, the discoveries in 2019 and 2024 were not only enlightening for being the first time seeing the shark on camera, but also in helping scientists learn more about the animal’s natural habitat.

This image shows the head of a goblin shark with its jaws extended. Dianne Bray/Museum Victoria

The geographic range of where the goblin shark roamed expanded considerably thanks to the mid-Pacific sighting in 2019, while the 2024 find extended how deep lamniform sharks could be found by 108 meters, according to the study.

The goblin shark’s name comes from its unique, and slightly terrifying, appearance. The shark, which is about 12 feet long on average, has a pink, squishy body and comically large nose hiding a set of razor-sharp teeth underneath. Goblin sharks are one of a species known as “living fossils,” since they are the only one left living in their family (Mitsukurinidae), which goes back 125 million years, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“It is really important that we still perform natural history work,” Judah said in a statement. “New discoveries like this demonstrate that there is still so much to explore in our deep ocean home. Given the newly-expanded geographic range of the goblin shark, this species can be included in regional management and a nationʻs biodiversity list, whereas, beforehand we didn’t know it was even there!”

versatility(多功能性)将是关键。

Computer science is out on U.S. college campuses, while the new “new” things — faculties like critical thinking and communication — may have a familiar ring.

The advent of artificial intelligence is giving a new shine to a liberal arts education, which career experts say nurtures the skills valued by employers as AI increasingly changes the workplace.

“Artificial intelligence is coming after IQ, not EQ,” said entrepreneur Arun Gupta, CEO of NobleReach Foundation, an organization that recruits people to the public sector, using the shorthand for “emotional quotient” — the kind of intelligence, social awareness and reasoning abilities that help organizations tick.

For young Americans pondering the best educational and professional path, the stakes are high as AI increasingly impacts the job market. Pursuing a traditional liberal arts education will position graduates for success as AI diffuses across industries and professions, Gupta said.

AI “can automate the financial or computer science skill, but EQ — the understanding of the problem — is the human dynamic,” he added.

Christopher Rim, founder and CEO of Command Education, a New York City company that helps advise high school students and their families on the college admissions process, said that creativity — along with creative problem-solving — helps set graduates apart from their peers.

“What employers will increasingly be looking for are people who can think laterally, challenge assumptions and bring a perspective that can’t be generated by a large language model,” he told CBS News. “As AI becomes more capable of handling technical execution, raw technical knowledge becomes less of a differentiating quality on its own.”

    Learning how to learn

Skills that companies will value “are, somewhat ironically, the cornerstones of a liberal arts education,” Rim noted.

By contrast, some of the career-focused hard skills that many college students learn could have less value in the labor market as AI advances, especially for tasks that would’ve once been performed by younger employees, according to experts.

As a result, what undergraduates should focus on is “learning how to learn,” said Rebecca Taber Staehelin, co-founder and co-CEO of Merit America, a nonprofit that helps train low-wage workers for higher-paying roles.

“It’s less important that you know how to do every technical aspect of a job than it is to understand the principles of the industry, how to build relationships, communicate well and manage conflict,” she added. “Individuals with those general muscles are better able to adapt and thrive versus a one-trick pony who says, ‘I know how to code in Java, and if that Java coding job goes away, I am up a creek.’”

    What AI can’t replace

Unlike previous generations of Americans, workers entering the labor market today should also expect to have several careers, involving a range of jobs and skills, rather than pursuing a narrower professional track. Versatility will be key.

“It is highly likely that graduates entering the workforce will not land a job that is squarely in their intended field or desired position,” Rim told CBS News. “As such, it is important that students leverage their coursework to show future employers that they are adaptable and multi-talented.”

“The goal isn’t to find a major that AI isn’t going to affect, because no major will be completely protected from technological change,” added Michael Itzkowitz, founder and president of the HEA Group, an organization focused on college access and economic mobility.

For students entering college, Itzkowitz recommends focusing on developing “communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills,” while also learning how to exercise sound judgment — another deeply human skill that he said AI can’t replace.

“It’s about finding a college program that helps students build skills that will remain valuable as tech changes,” he said. “With AI doing the hardcore technical work, other skill sets may be increasingly more valuable.”

China says “spy turtles” and “spy fish” deployed by foreign intelligence agencies snooping in its waters

    June 12, 2026 / 8:15 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Qian Zhao

Foreign intelligence services are using “spy turtles” and “spy fish” to snoop on China, the country’s Ministry of State Security said Friday.

“An unseen covert war of espionage is currently unfolding” in the seas around China’s coast, the ministry wrote in a post on the WeChat social media platform.

In recent years, overseas spy agencies have been “continuously collecting and stealing sensitive maritime data through various new types of espionage equipment,” it said, including “spy turtles and spy fish.”

In certain Chinese waters, “relatively large living marine animals have been fitted with sensors to swim in specific areas, collect ocean data, and transmit it to overseas satellites,” the ministry claimed, without providing details on where the animals had been found or which nations they suspected of overseeing the alleged espionage.

The other devices listed included “detection buoys,” “a new type of wave glider,” and equipment on ships.

The post said foreign spy agencies had for years tried to analyze Chinese naval activities, create “underwater maps” of the country’s maritime coastline and monitor its offshore oil and gas deposits.

The ministry urged researchers, fishermen and vessel owners to remain vigilant and “report suspicious devices.”

China has previously rewarded anglers for turning in alleged maritime spy devices. Some have received up to 50,00 yuan (about $73,000) for their help, according to CBS News’ partner network BBC News.

The Chinese ministry’s assertion isn’t the first claim of marine animals being deployed for sabotage. In 2019, a Beluga whale turned up on the Norwegian coast wearing a harness that appeared to have a mount for a small camera, sparking speculation that it had been trained to spy for the Russian navy.

Moscow never issued an official reaction.

In 2023, the British military said Russia appeared to be training dolphins for combat to counter Ukrainian forces. The animals were “likely intended to counter enemy divers,” said the British defense ministry.

Former Biden ambassador considered running against him over border mess, bashes Kamala in new book

    June 12, 2026 8:13am EDT / Fox News

Salazar criticized Harris as ineffective on migration despite sitting ‘next door to the Oval Office for almost four years’

    By Robert McGreevy, Fox News

Ken Salazar, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico under President Joe Biden, considered running for president against his former boss in 2024, he revealed.

“I should run for president,” Salazar told himself, after Biden’s disastrous July 2024 debate performance, according to a book excerpt obtained by Politico.

Salazar also claimed that he begged for a border czar and early on advised Biden to refer to the U.S. border situation as a crisis.

“There was political failure to understand the reality of the crisis at the border, and the political consequence it would have on Democrats in the 2024 election.

HOW IMMIGRATION AND BORDER SECURITY DOMINATED 2024 AND DECIDED AN ELECTION

Salazar claimed that within the administration, officials used the word “crisis” all the time, “even if at that time the White House refused to acknowledge it as such.”

When Salazar advised then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to use the word, Mayorkas apparently told him: “Ken, I have a lot on my plate already. I’m about to be impeached for all this border stuff. The Republicans have it out for me.”

Salazar never ended up declaring himself as a candidate despite recruiting a team and drafting a presidential platform, Politico reported.

BIDEN AIDES WARNED DONORS DROPPING OUT AND RUNNING KAMALA HARRIS WOULD BE A MISTAKE: BOOK

He had planned to throw his name into consideration when Biden dropped out, but the Democratic Party never held open primaries, instead choosing to coronate Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s candidate unilaterally, a decision Salazar called “a mistake,” per Politico.

FILE – Former U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar speaks in Mexico City on Dec. 6, 2023.

Salazar criticized Harris’ action, or lack thereof, on the border after she was tasked with stemming the flow of migration. Harris was dubbed the border czar, a position Salazar had pushed for the Biden White House to create, but he was unhappy with the nature of her work in the position.

“But sadly, her designation in this position was having no effect on migration flows,” he wrote.

HOW HARRIS WAS DOGGED BY ‘BORDER CZAR’ LABEL, PAST RADICAL IMMIGRATION VIEWS DURING FAILED CAMPAIGN

“Harris had been placed in charge of getting at the ‘root causes’ of migration, but many felt she had been ineffective,” he continued.

“For whatever reason, she had been unable to help with the border and migration crisis, even though she’d sat next door to the Oval Office for almost four years.”

Salazar, a Colorado-born lawyer of Mexican descent and his state’s first Hispanic senator, praised Biden’s eventual decision to effectively shut down the border in 2024, but acknowledged it was too late.

MARK KELLY EYES 2028 WHITE HOUSE RUN WHILE FIGHTING TRUMP DEMOTION THREAT

“This should have been a moment of vindication — after all, American voters were demanding action on the border — but it was too late, and images of an out-of-control border would dominate the closing months of the presidential election,” he wrote, per Politico.

Salazar also revealed in his book, titled “Borderlands: My Fight For An Inclusive America,” that he’s been giving out advice to potential Democratic presidential candidates, pitching them on his “borderlands platform,” an immigration policy that he says acknowledges the U.S. immigration system is broken and “must be fixed,” according to Politico.
