    2026-06-11T10:02:43.44Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/kash-patel-fbis-defining-test-securing-world-cup-2026-06-11/

Exclusive: Kash Patel on the FBI’s defining test: securing the World Cup

    2026-06-11T10:02:43.44Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/kash-patel-fbis-defining-test-securing-world-cup-2026-06-11/

ABOARD FBI JET, June 11 (Reuters) – With 48 teams, 36 base camps and 11 stadiums, the World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday, is one of the biggest security challenges the FBI has ever faced.

That’s before you account for 3 million visitors, including heads of state, not to mention threats from drones, spies, terrorists, drunken fans, cartels or pyrotechnics.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

“It’s a huge lift, probably the biggest lift in FBI history, in American history,” said FBI Director ‌Kash Patel in a mid-flight interview aboard the bureau’s Gulfstream jet.

In a wide-ranging interview in late May, as Patel flew from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to Dallas to speak at a law enforcement conference, he talked about the agency’s extensive preparation for the world’s biggest sporting event amid controversies and regular reports that he may soon be fired.

Patel, 46, became FBI director in February 2025 and has presided over several major investigations already, including the murder of Charlie Kirk. But he said there has been no challenge quite like major sporting events, where terror and other threats run high.

“Literally the first week in office when I got to the FBI I said we have to prepare for the Olympics, the World Cup, two Formula One races and the Super Bowl,” he said. The FBI, along with the Department of Homeland Security, was ultimately responsible for protecting the event, “not just here but overseas,” he added.

The FBI is the lead domestic U.S. intelligence agency for the World Cup, which the country is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, but it is also relying on state and local law enforcement. The FBI is responsible for doing 300,000 background checks of players, coaches and personnel, while state and local authorities will be charged with security outside the venues and will help with counterdrone measures.

    DRONE SCHOOL

Drones are one of the biggest threats to the games and host cities, he said. The FBI launched a counterdrone training program in October 2025, and has so far graduated 70 local police in host U.S. cities.

Drones are “one of the biggest ways that people who want to conduct adversarial attacks can effectuate them cheaply and from a distance, and with not much planning,” Patel said.

The FBI has also assembled a joint operations center of foreign police from 46 of the 48 participating countries — minus Iran and Haiti — to deliver real-time threat information from their home countries.

The model, he said, was akin to a joint operations center established in Milan for the 2026 Winter Olympics where U.S. officials coordinated with Italian police to protect American visitors and athletes.

That was also the scene of Patel celebrating with the gold medal-winning U.S. hockey team, singing, spraying beer in the locker room, and putting President Donald Trump on speaker phone. He was the focus of widespread criticism for what some critics portrayed ‌as an Olympics junket on the taxpayer’s dime.

This came amid several media reports about allegedly excessive drinking, which Patel and the FBI have strongly denied. Patel is personally suing The Atlantic for what he has called false reporting.

Patel says the trip to Milan was critical preparation for the World Cup.

“We learned a ton from Milan,” he said.

    THREAT ASSESSMENT

Separately, Reuters reviewed the 78-page FBI and DHS joint threat assessment from May for the World Cup, which illustrates the complexity of securing the tournament. It details myriad threats nationally and specific to each of the host cities and base camps and offers recommendations to local law enforcement in all 11 U.S. World Cup host cities.

It says attendance by Trump at matches will complicate security efforts and notes an increased threat to law enforcement and venue security if they are mistaken for National Guard or ICE immigration agents.

“Recent conflicts in the Middle East, such as with Iran, have resonated with some U.S.-based violent extremists and some hate crime perpetrators and could further exacerbate anti-U.S., anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, or anti-Muslim grievances,” the assessment says.

The assessment specifically details concerns about Iran’s two group matches at SoFi Stadium right outside Los Angeles, including violent protests from fans of the team or opponents of the Iranian government.

Patel said Iran was responsible for a cyber attack on the Los Angeles Metro in March that shut down parts of the system. The pro-Iran group Ababil of Minab claimed responsibility for the attack.

    AIR PATEL

Patel has faced criticism by congressional Democrats for his use of government aircraft, and lawmakers have requested the Government Accountability Office investigate.

The accusations are unfair, said Patel. By law, he cannot fly commercial and must reimburse the bureau for personal travel.

According to FBI responses to the GAO, Patel has taken fewer personal flights than his two predecessors and has reimbursed the government as required.

The FBI told the GAO that Patel has made 11 trips to his personal residence in 2025, nearly half as many trips per year as former director Christopher Wray and more than a third fewer than former director James Comey.

The investigation remains ongoing and is expected to be finalized next year, a GAO spokesperson told Reuters.

He has also saved the agency millions of dollars flying out of Joint Base Andrews instead of Ronald Reagan National Airport, Patel said.

“We use military government airfields every chance we get,” he said.

Reuters reimbursed the FBI for the reporter’s one-way trip.

Trump admin axes ties to dozens of progressive groups in ‘direct opposition’ to mission: ‘Decisive action’

    June 11, 2026 6:00am EDT / Fox News

By Kiera McDonald, Andrew Mark Miller

FIRST ON FOX: The Department of the Interior is cutting 43 partnerships with outside groups it says no longer align with the Trump administration’s priorities, eliminating more than $4 million in planned funding for programs tied to DEI, environmental justice and support services for illegal immigrants.

Led by Secretary Doug Burgum, the department determined the agreements were “operating in direct opposition” to its mission, according to a press release obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital.

“Under Secretary Burgum, the Department of the Interior is ending partnerships with groups that no longer represent the priorities of the American people,” the department said. In response, DOI said it is terminating all agreements with the identified groups and removing references to them from its websites.

The terminated agreements supported internship programs, conservation initiatives, research projects and cooperative partnerships.

A department-wide review launched in March uncovered nearly 3,000 active agreements with about 2,000 outside groups, ranging from NGOs and nonprofits to private entities and educational institutions.

The review later found multiple groups “did not appear to provide a clear benefit” or “did not align with the department’s mission,” according to the department.

Among the groups targeted were the Hispanic Access Foundation, which offers scholarships for illegal immigrant Latino students, and Latino Outdoors, which the department said provided instructions on avoiding detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Latino Outdoors has advocated against oil and gas development, while the Hispanic Access Foundation has worked with the National Park Service “to conduct a variety of educational and cultural support activities,” according to the department.

The department cited the American Alliance of Museums, which it said had a contract with the NPS to build DEI programs across national parks as part of the agency’s Community Engagement initiative. The department pointed to the group’s previous Facing Change initiative, which promoted DEI efforts at museums.

Conservation International, an environmental group that the department said advocates for a “total phase out of fossil fuels,” was also flagged. The department noted the organization’s statements describing fossil fuels as the “leading culprit” of planet-warming carbon emissions, as well as its support for environmental justice and equity-focused climate policies.

Another group on the department’s list was The Cultural Landscape Foundation, which it said has a master cooperative agreement with the NPS “to conduct a variety of educational and cultural support activities.” The organization has opposed several administration initiatives, including suing over changes at the Kennedy Center, criticizing plans for a White House ballroom and highlighting cultural landscapes and historic sites it says are threatened by administration actions through its Landslide 2026: Erasing American History initiative.

“Under President Trump and Secretary Burgum, the Department of the Interior is taking decisive action to ensure its partnerships and resources support the priorities of this administration and the interests of the American people,” Matthew Middleton, principal deputy communications director and director of research, told Fox News Digital.

“As part of that commitment, the Department is ending relationships with organizations whose advocacy for phasing out baseload energy, defunding law enforcement services, and promoting racially preferential programs directly conflicts with this administration’s priorities. Interior will continue to invest in partnerships that expand access to public lands, promote responsible stewardship, and deliver tangible benefits to the American people.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the Hispanic Access Foundation, Latino Outdoors, the American Alliance of Museums, Conservation International and the Cultural Landscape Foundation for comment.

Other groups the DOI is cutting ties with include: The Green Schools Alliance, Doris Duke Foundation, Hispanic Access Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, California Native Plant Society, American Alliance of Museums, Clean Ocean Action and the National Geographic Society.

The move is the latest in a series of administration actions, including efforts to roll back DEI initiatives, strengthen immigration enforcement and expand energy development. The department said it will ensure future partnerships align with the agency’s mission.

House to take up last-minute extension of key FISA spy power, but uproar over Bill Pulte could doom vote

    June 11, 2026 / 6:00 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — House Republicans on Thursday will move forward on what’s expected to be a futile effort to extend a key spy authority until early July, after President Trump’s pick for director of national intelligence rattled lawmakers.

The authority, known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, is set to expire Friday after Congress has twice punted on the issue since the original deadline in April.

The lower chamber is planning to vote on another short-term extension Thursday morning that would push back the deadline to July 2. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, fast-tracked the measure, meaning it will need two-thirds majority support for passage. It’s all but certain to fail.

“I certainly hope that everyone will do the right thing, put politics aside, for a short-term extension. We’re not asking for anything heroic here,” Johnson said Wednesday.

Mr. Trump upended a bipartisan compromise to renew Section 702 for three years when he announced his decision last week to appoint housing regulator Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence. In the role, Pulte will oversee all of the nation’s spy agencies.

Democrats said they would not support a renewal with Pulte installed at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. They cited his lack of a national security background and his controversial tenure at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, during which he accused several of Mr. Trump’s foes of mortgage fraud. The choice also received pushback from some Republicans.

Even before Pulte’s appointment, negotiations on a long-term renewal ran into issues in both the House and Senate from lawmakers across the political spectrum, with warrantless surveillance of Americans at the top of their list of concerns. Section 702 allows the government to collect the communications of noncitizens located outside the U.S. without a warrant, though it can also sweep up the data of Americans who are in contact with targeted foreigners.

Mr. Trump on Tuesday dug in on his decision to appoint Pulte, appearing to move up his start date, after meeting with Johnson at the White House earlier in the day about the path forward.

After meeting again with Johnson on Wednesday, Mr. Trump asked Congress to approve a short-term extension of Section 702 to “provide time for the selection and confirmation” of a permanent intelligence chief.

Johnson called it a “good-faith gesture” to Democrats.

“I think the Democrats need to take that and at least allow us a short-term extension on FISA,” he said Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, said Tuesday that the selection of a permanent appointment would “play an important role in unlocking the support that we need to get FISA done.”

Republican Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Wednesday a lapse in the spy power would be “uncharted territory.”

“Once this authorization expires, the clock starts ticking,” he said during floor debate. “The implications get worse every single day. While the 702 database would remain available to search, the data in that database will become increasingly out of date.”

Crawford also cited the potential for service providers to refuse to comply with the government’s requests for data if the statute lapses.

Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, argued that “government surveillance activities will continue unchanged” after Friday.

“Everything that’s already been authorized and certified is already in motion, and current FISA authorizations will continue unaffected, at least through March 17, 2027,” he said, referring to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court’s reported annual recertification of the program.

(CBS News)

CBS News poll finds most Americans believe extraterrestrial life exists – and some think it’s already here

    June 11, 2026 / 7:00 AM EDT / CBS News
By Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus

We are not alone in space – and maybe not even on Earth. At least that’s what the public believes.

Most Americans believe intelligent life exists on other planets, and one in five think they’ve already made contact with us.

For those who don’t think that’s happened yet, many expect contact at some point in the future.

If such face-to-face encounters were to take place on Earth, Americans say they would greet the alien visitors with more fascination than fear, along with some unease.

The government’s recent release of UFO files has some Americans saying we’ve already been visited by extraterrestrial life. This is especially the case among those who have watched the videos in the UFO files.

And people suspect there’s still more to come. Eight in 10 think the government knows more about UFOs than it is telling.

The percentage who believe intelligent life exists on other planets has become more widespread in recent years. Looking back just to 2010, fewer than half of Americans believed that. Since that time, higher numbers of men, women and people across age groups and education levels now believe in the existence of intelligent life.

People say they would be more curious than scared about the prospect of meeting extraterrestrials should they come to Earth. But such contact also generates some anxiety — more would be nervous than calm.

    Ever seen a UFO?

The debate about whether UFOs have visited Earth continues.

Seventeen percent of Americans report having personally seen something they thought was a UFO. This is similar to what Gallup polling has shown in recent years, but a higher percentage than what their polling found in the 1970s.

More men than women report having seen a UFO.

People who say they have seen what they believe was a UFO overwhelmingly think intelligent life exists, and most would be curious upon meeting such beings, with many also saying they would feel nervous and excited about the prospect.

    So, what are they?

Americans are split on whether reports of UFOs might sometimes be caused by alien spacecrafts visiting Earth, or are always the result of human or natural activity that comes from Earth.

Those who believe intelligent life exists out there overwhelmingly think reports of UFOs are at least sometimes the result of alien spacecraft visiting. But those who don’t believe in intelligent life think the more likely explanation is human or natural activity.

Most Americans have heard or read at least something about the federal government’s release of files and videos related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP, also known as Unidentified Flying Objects, and four in 10 report watching videos that were released.

Three in 10 say this material has made them more likely to believe that aliens visited Earth, a figure that rises to four in 10 among those who have watched videos.

Americans still think the U.S. government knows more.

A big majority says the government is not telling all it knows about UFOs. It’s the predominant opinion among those who believe in extraterrestrial life, as well as those who do not. And there is agreement across party lines on this: Most Democrats, Republicans and independents don’t think the government is telling the public all it knows.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,023 U.S. adults interviewed between June 2-4, 2026. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±2.8 points. CBS News polls cited in this analysis from 1997, 2010, 2017 and 2021 were conducted by phone.

US screwworm cases test months of federal preparation

    2026-06-11T10:03:47.95Z / Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. government is fast-tracking drugs and accelerating grant funding in its multi-agency strategy to beat back the New World screwworm, a parasite that threatens the nation’s beleaguered cattle herd, even as staffing cuts and a shortage of a key prevention tool have raised concerns about the response.

A widespread outbreak of the pest could pose a multi-billion-dollar threat to the beef industry, already plagued by longstanding drought. Beef prices are ‌near record highs, contributing to Americans’ economic anxiety as the November midterms approach, where President Donald Trump’s Republican party will fight to maintain its slim control of Congress.

The USDA has been working since early last year with animal health companies, state livestock officials, farm groups and other federal agencies to prepare for the potential incursion of screwworm into the U.S., according to agency statements and Reuters interviews.

Yet the agency is operating with 25% fewer animal health experts than it had at the start of Trump’s second term, after hundreds took a financial incentive program offered as part of the administration’s earlier effort to shrink the size of the federal workforce.

That preparation has included fast-tracking screwworm treatments for farm animals and pets, building a stockpile of those treatments in Texas and surging personnel to areas of Texas where cases have been confirmed.

“We have been prepared and preparing since early last year for the re-emergence in America,” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Monday at a press conference in Kerrville, Texas, where she also said the USDA will distribute $100 million in funding earlier than expected for new technologies to combat screwworm.

The agency has more than 100 staff working full-time on screwworm, Rollins told the Senate Agriculture Committee on Wednesday. So far, the USDA has confirmed six screwworm cases in Texas and New Mexico, affecting four cows, a goat and a dog.

Some Texas ranchers are critical of the USDA’s response so far. Susan Storey, 62, a rancher in La Salle County, said the agency’s public communications were insufficient to soothe her concerns about the spread of the pest.

“We just want more action,” she said.

    TREATMENTS FAST-TRACKED

As part of the federal preparation, the Food and Drug Administration has issued 12 emergency use authorizations or conditional approvals for screwworm treatments since last September. Both categories allow for the treatments to be used once companies have provided safety and some efficacy evidence, but without going through the FDA’s full review process.

That fast-tracking was coordinated among the FDA, the USDA and the Environmental Protection Agency, which has authority over some pesticides that could be used against screwworm, said Jeff Simmons, CEO of the animal health company Elanco.

Elanco has been closely involved in the preparations and two of the company’s fast-tracked drugs are being sent to a USDA stockpile in Texas, Simmons said.

“It is something that we were preparing for, expecting — it was probably a matter of if, not when,” Simmons said.

The animal health arm of biopharmaceutical company Merck has ‌also worked closely with the USDA and Texas animal health officials over the past year to prepare for potential screwworm cases, and received conditional approval from the FDA for its topical screwworm treatment in December, said Justin Welsh, executive director of livestock technical services.

Welsh said the USDA response has been proactive, but that he expects to see more cases emerge.

“It’s safe to say we’ll see it continue to spread, but hopefully very slowly,” Welsh said.

    SHORT ON FLIES, FEWER STAFF

The USDA is facing a shortage of one of its key tools against screwworm flies — sterile male flies that breed with females, halting reproduction. The USDA is building a facility to produce more sterile flies in Texas, but it is not expected to open until late 2027.

The USDA is deploying 100 million sterile flies produced weekly at a plant in Panama, though officials have said many millions more are needed to beat back the pest.

“We don’t have enough (flies) to do the complete push, but we do have enough to manage … the growth of the development of it in Texas,” said the USDA’s undersecretary for research, Scott Hutchins, at the Monday press conference.

The agency has also seen a significant drop in animal health response staff since the start of Trump’s second term.

According to the USDA’s Office of Inspector General, more than 2,100 staff left the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service between January and June 2025, about 25% attrition.

A group of Democratic senators wrote in a Tuesday letter to Rollins and her deputy secretary, Stephen Vaden, that staff reductions at APHIS and other USDA agencies could hamper the agency’s screwworm response.

“The reemergence of the New World screwworm in the U.S. highlights the urgent need to fully staff the USDA’s Services, which are on the frontlines of disease outbreak detection and rapid response to dangerous threats to agricultural security,” said the letter from Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley and 10 others.

Rollins told the Senate Agriculture Committee that the reduced staff has not affected the agency’s screwworm response.

Veterinarians like those employed by APHIS are key to the screwworm response because they work with local, state and federal officials to observe and advise on suspected cases and guide the response, said Michael Bailey, a veterinarian and president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“We don’t have enough veterinarians in those public health areas to begin with, and anything that leads to them leaving the government, any area of government, is going to have a negative impact,” Bailey said.
