A former FBI agent who was prosecuted for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and later hired by the Trump-era Justice Department has left his government post, he announced Thursday.

In a post on X, Jared Wise said he came to the Justice Department hoping to expose alleged abuses by prosecutors and agents who investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, but he now believes it’s not possible to complete that mission from his role at the department.

“I returned to Washington to fully expose the abuses by the FBI and DOJ against J6 defendants, but it became clear that this will only happen from outside of government. So I left and will do so,” Wise wrote in his social media post.

Wise served as an FBI agent and a supervisory agent from 2004 to 2017. After leaving the bureau, he was charged in connection with Jan. 6, facing felony charges of civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, as well as four misdemeanor counts. Prosecutors said that Wise encouraged the crowd outside the Capitol to hurt law enforcement officers, yelling: “Yeah, kill ’em!” They also accused him of entering the Capitol building.

Wise was pardoned by President Trump on the first day of his second term in office, along with nearly 1,600 other alleged rioters. Wise was in the middle of his trial at the time.

Wise served as a counselor to Ed Martin, the Justice Department’s pardon attorney who previously presided over the agency’s Weaponization Working Group until he was ousted from that role at the beginning of the year.

In his role at the department, Wise was involved in drafting a report that was focused on the prosecutions of Jan. 6 rioters, sources previously told CBS News. No public report has ever been issued, and it was unclear whether one will be made public in the future.

Wise announced his resignation the same day that Mr. Trump ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi and installed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general.

Martin and staffers in Blanche’s office sometimes clashed, in part amid frustrations over what Blanche’s staff perceived as a lack of progress by Martin on the work of the Weaponization Working Group, according to several sources familiar with the dynamics.

Wise’s role at the Justice Department drew criticism from congressional Democrats. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois called his hiring “a slap in the face to law enforcement everywhere.”

Hegseth says he will let troops take personal firearms onto military bases

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that he will allow service members to carry personal weapons onto military installations, citing the Second Amendment and recent shootings at bases across the country.

In a video posted to X, Hegseth said he is signing a memo that will direct base commanders to allow requests for troops to carry privately owned firearms “with the presumption that it is necessary for personal protection.”

He said any denial of a service member’s request must be explained in detail and in writing.

“Effectively, our bases across the country were gun-free zones,” Hegseth said. “Unless you’re training or unless you are a military policeman, you couldn’t carry, you couldn’t bring your own firearm for your own personal protection onto post.”

Questions about why service members lacked access to weapons have often emerged following shootings on the nation’s military bases. Such shootings have ranged from isolated events between service members to mass casualty events, such as the shooting by an Army psychiatrist at Texas’ Ford Hood in 2009 that left 13 people dead.

Hegseth cited some of those events in his video, including a shooting that injured five soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia last year. Officials said the shooter, an Army sergeant who worked at the base, used his personal handgun before he was tackled by fellow soldiers and arrested. Army prosecutors say he is seeking to plead guilty to attempted murder and other charges.

“In these instances, minutes are a lifetime,” Hegseth said. “And our service members have the courage and training to make those precious, short minutes count.”

Defense Department policy has prohibited military personnel from carrying personal weapons on base without permission from a senior commander, with strict protocol for how the firearms must be stored.

Typically, military personnel must officially check their guns out of secure storage to go to on-base hunting areas or shooting ranges, then check all firearms back in promptly after their sanctioned use. Military police are often the only armed personnel on base, outside of shooting ranges, hunting areas or in training, where soldiers can wield their service weapons without ammunition.

Tanya Schardt, senior counsel at the Brady gun violence prevention organization, said in a statement to The Associated Press that Defense Department leaders and the military’s top brass have opposed relaxing the current policy, which was originally enacted under President George H.W. Bush.

Schardt noted that most active duty service members who die by suicide do so with a weapon they own personally, not one military-issued, and argued that there will “undoubtedly be an increase in gun suicide and other gun violence.”

While fewer American service members died by suicide in 2024, the suicide rates among active duty troops overall still have gradually increased between 2011 and 2024, according to a Pentagon report released Tuesday.

“Our military installations are among the most guarded, protected properties in the world, and they’ve never been ‘gun-free zones,’” Schardt said. “If there is a problem with violent crime on these installations, then the Secretary of Defense has an obligation to alert the American people and describe how he’s working to prevent that crime.”

Hegseth’s decision to loosen firearm rules marks the defense secretary’s latest change to military policy. During his time in Pentagon leadership, Hegseth has railed against what he views as “woke” policies, and has sought to overhaul everything from the military’s equal opportunity policies to its grooming and fitness standards.

The military has also sought to cut ties with top graduate school programs that Hegseth views as “woke breeding grounds,” and has directed libraries to identify and in some cases remove books that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. And last week, Hegseth announced a series of reforms to the military’s Chaplain Corps.

Hegseth has also ousted several top military officials, most recently Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, who was asked to take immediate retirement on Thursday.

President Donald Trump on Thursday proclaimed that certain imported patented pharmaceuticals and related ingredients could face tariffs of up to 100%, framing the move as a national security measure and intensifying his push to bring drug manufacturing back to the United States.

The proclamation creates a tiered system for drugmakers: companies with Commerce Department-approved plans to onshore production could face a 20% tariff instead, while some firms that strike pricing and manufacturing agreements with the administration could receive zero-tariff treatment for a period.

A senior administration official said the policy amounts to a “100% tax” on drugs produced abroad.

Trump’s proclamation states that imported pharmaceuticals and key ingredients “are being imported into the United States in such quantities and under such circumstances as to threaten to impair the national security of the United States.”

The move sets up a major clash over the cost and supply of brand-name medicines, as Trump argues the U.S. is overly dependent on foreign pharmaceutical manufacturing while offering lower tariffs to companies that build in America.

According to the proclamation, about 53% of patented pharmaceutical products distributed in the U.S. are produced abroad, while only 15% of patented active pharmaceutical ingredients by volume are made domestically.

Under the framework, imports of patented pharmaceuticals listed in Annex I will face a 100% tariff, unless they qualify for lower rates.

Companies with approved onshoring plans can instead receive a 20% tariff, though that rate rises to 100% in 2030, according to the proclamation.

The administration is using that structure to push companies to shift production to the United States, officials said.

The proclamation also sets lower tariff rates for certain allies: 15% for products from Japan, the European Union (EU), South Korea, and Switzerland, and 10% for the United Kingdom (UK), which could fall to zero under a future agreement.

It also creates a zero-tariff lane for companies that both onshore production and enter “Most-Favored-Nation” pricing agreements with the administration.

Not all drugs are affected. The proclamation says generic pharmaceuticals will not be subject to tariffs “at this time,” and U.S.-origin drugs are also excluded.

The broader push ties into the administration’s TrumpRx initiative, including the recently launched TrumpRx.gov platform, which the White House says gives Americans access to lower prices on some high-cost brand-name drugs through “Most-Favored-Nation” pricing agreements with pharmaceutical companies.

The tariffs will take effect July 31, 2026, for some companies and Sept. 29, 2026, for others, according to the proclamation.

Trump issued the order under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which allows the president to restrict imports deemed a national security threat.
