Vice President JD Vance’s chief of staff set to depart White House role

Jacob Reses received huge praise from the biggest players in the White House

    2026-06-11 11:05 EDT / Fox News

Vice President JD Vance’s chief of staff is set to depart his role, Fox News Digital learned Thursday.

Jacob Reses is set to formally leave his role by the end of summer. Reses worked with Vance for years and played a key role in Vance’s 2022 Senate campaign.

“Jacob’s been by my side for my whole career in public life. I can’t imagine having been on this life-changing journey without him. From day one of my time as a Senator-elect, I could not have asked for a more loyal and discerning advisor and friend as my chief of staff,” Vance said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“I’ll miss him dearly, but he won’t be far, and I plan to keep his counsel close until our paths cross again,” he added.

Reses received praise from a litany of top White House officials upon news of his departure, including White House chief of staff Suzie Wiles, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Attorney Gen. Todd Blanche, Treasury Sec. Scott Bessent and others.

“Jacob has served the Vice President and the entire administration with distinction. He understands the moment we’re in and he spent every day fighting to deliver results for the President. His intellect, leadership, and humor will be missed,” Rubio said.

Trump envoy Steve Witkoff called Reses “a killer.”

News of the departure comes just days after Vance referred allegations involving Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to the Justice Department’s fraud division for a potential criminal investigation.

Vance made the announcement during an appearance on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” when he was asked about a report released by the House Oversight Committee alleging that state officials, including Walz and Ellison, were warned of fraud in the state but did not take action to stop it in part because of litigation threats and concerns about being accused of discrimination.

“We’re certainly going to investigate this, Jesse, and I guess now I can make a bit of breaking news because I left the White House to come here to do this interview with you. And before I did, we actually referred this particular case to the Department of Justice for a full criminal investigation. We are not going to do what the Biden administration did and make judgments of the law before all the facts are in,” Vance said.

“But here’s what’s particularly troubling about this to me is, Jesse, you had people within Governor Walz’s office who were saying, you know what? This looks like fraud. It looks like these Somalian illegal immigrants are doing something that’s very shady, and then you had people who shut them down, who shut these whistleblowers down and said, you know, you’re a racist or you’re a xenophobe for asking questions about where taxpayer money is going,” he continued.

Human remains found in sleeping bag in national park identified after 26 years

Forensic tests have helped identify the remains of a man last seen in 1998, officials said. The tests were conducted 26 years after the remains were first discovered in a sleeping bag in the backcountry of Washington state’s Olympic National Park.

Joseph Louis Serrao Jr. was originally from Hawaii and had been in Washington prior to going missing, his family told Othram, the forensic laboratory that helped National Park Service investigators solve his case. The family said they had not heard from him since 1998.

About two years later, in July 2000, a researcher discovered human skeletal remains in a remote part of Olympic National Park, along the Sol Duc River, the National Park Service said. The sleeping bag in which the remains were found was inside a tent, and discovered with it were multiple items, including binoculars, a day hiker pack, a shoulder bag, a folding saw, a blanket and winter gear, according to the park service and the laboratory.

At the time, a pathologist from the medical examiner’s office in Washington’s King County determined the remains likely belonged to a man between the ages of 30 and 50, who had died at least six months and up to two years earlier.

Investigators eventually learned that Serrao, who was born in December 1960, would have been in his late 30s at the time of his death. But, back then, the lack of “usable” fingerprints and other concrete evidence prevented authorities from developing leads that might have helped them uncover his identity.

His name remained unknown until recently. A breakthrough came once an anthropologist with the medical examiner’s office submitted a DNA sample to Othram in 2024, according to the park service, which investigated Serrao’s case alongside King County authorities and the laboratory. Using forensic genealogy — a technique that can help pinpoint living relatives of a deceased person based on the decedent’s DNA — the lab was able to identify possible family members by 2025.

Investigators reached out to relatives in multiple states, including Hawaii, and eventually compared and matched DNA samples from them to the one taken from Serrao’s remains.

“This case remained unresolved for nearly 30 years, but investigators never lost sight of the goal of identifying this individual and finding answers for his family,” Debra Flowers, deputy chief of the park service’s criminal investigative division, said in a statement. “I’m proud of the persistence and collaboration that made this identification possible, and I hope it brings some measure of closure to those who have spent so many years wondering what happened to Joseph.”

A key U.S. surveillance program is on the brink of expiring after House Democrats and a group of conservatives sank a temporary extension amid a standoff over President Donald Trump’s intelligence chief pick.

Lawmakers voted 198-218 on Thursday to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) for three weeks, falling well short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage.

The measure, meant to give Congress more time to negotiate a long-term renewal, faced an uphill battle amid widespread Democratic opposition. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., warned he would withhold support for extending the program until Trump reversed his decision to name Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., put the bill on the floor via suspension of the rules, a fast-track procedure that requires a higher threshold to secure passage.

WHY TRUMP PICKED BILL PULTE TO LEAD US INTELLIGENCE AS CRITICS QUESTION HIS QUALIFICATIONS

He indicated he would not keep the House in session before the spy law was scheduled to lapse Saturday at 12:01 a.m.

“I attempted to pass a short-term extension for three weeks. Clean extension, no changes to the law,” Johnson told reporters following the failed vote. And the Democrats … voted against it and applauded themselves as they left the building. What would be the point of me going through this exercise over and over?”

Reps. Jared Golden, D-Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., Don Davis, D-N.C., Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, Susie Lee, D-N.V., and Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., were the 7 Democrats to cross party lines and support extending the program through July 2.

Meanwhile, 19 Republicans, who were skeptical of a clean reauthorization of Section 702 without greater privacy guardrails, joined the majority of Democrats in voting down the measure.

Thursday’s vote was a notable setback for Trump, who urged lawmakers to reauthorize the program ahead of the June 12 deadline with no modifications.

Democrats and some Republicans have argued that Pulte, a Trump insider and senior housing official, is unqualified for the top intelligence post.

Trump has largely defended and refused to bow to Democrats’ demands. His comments Wednesday that he is actively looking for a permanent replacement for Pulte, who is expected to begin the job June 19, were not enough to soften Democrats’ opposition.

The standoff over the critical surveillance tool has led to tensions erupting in the lower chamber with little time to act before the law’s expiration.

Jeffries called Pulte a “malignant clown” during a news conference earlier this week and pledged that House Democrats would probe his tenure at the Federal Housing Finance Agency if they retake power in November. As the agency’s director, Pulte launched investigations into several Trump foes over alleged mortgage fraud.

Meanwhile, Republicans have warned that letting the spy law sunset would leave the United States uniquely vulnerable amid an influx of foreigners into the country with the World Cup underway and as the war with Iran drags on. They argue that Democrats are putting the country at a grave security risk by failing to extend the program into July.

“45 countries descend upon the United States for World Cup games, which just so happens to be the week that Democrats have actively chosen to disallow this critical national security tool from being renewed to allow it to go dark,” House Intelligence Chairman Rick Crawford, R-Ark., said Wednesday. “This is unserious, very dangerous behavior on the part of congressional Democrats.”

“You cannot play politics with the security of the American people,” Johnson told reporters. “I am praying that they come to their senses.”

The Section 702 program allows the U.S. government to collect intelligence on foreigners abroad who are using U.S. communication systems. The spy law also allows the government to sweep up the messages of Americans when communicating with foreign suspects, provoking the ire of privacy hawks in both parties.

The program is credited with thwarting a terrorist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Austria in 2024, as well as gathering intelligence used to identify and eliminate a prominent Mexican cartel leader and providing information used to intercept shipments of fentanyl precursors from China.

Congress passed two consecutive short-term extensions of the law earlier this year, but has yet to strike a deal on a multi-year fix.

Some Democrats have argued Republicans’ warnings are political theater and have pointed to an intelligence court ruling that recertified Section 702 through March 2027.

“Existing law allows Section 702 collection to continue under an order from the FISA court for another year, even without congressional reauthorization,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Wednesday. “Congress can and must take the time to get this right.”

But GOP lawmakers warned that allowing the government’s warrantless surveillance powers to sunset entails substantial risk, including potential legal challenges.

“If this authority lapses starting on Saturday, we move into uncharted territory,” Crawford said Wednesday. “The implications get worse every single day.”

“While the 702 database would remain available to search, the data in that database will become increasingly out of date, with the potential of provider noncompliance with orders, litigation by providers or outside groups, and even reticence by agency personnel to continue implementing an expired authority for fear of personal liability,” he added.

    • Lyft, Uber say new law forces them to keep unsafe drivers
    • Law would take effect July 28, following override of ex-Mayor Adams’ veto
    • NYC officials defend law, emphasizing due process for app-based drivers

NEW YORK, June 11 (Reuters) – Lyft LYFT.O joined Uber Technologies UBER.N in suing ‌New York City to block a new law they said would force them to keep bad drivers who threaten public and passenger safety on their platforms.

The Lyft lawsuit was filed late Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, 24 hours after Uber sued.

Both companies are challenging Local Law 52 of 2026, which generally prevents large ride-sharing companies from swiftly dismissing drivers absent a “bona fide economic reason” or “just cause.”

The companies said the law targeting “wrongful deactivations” violated their due process and free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution.

They also said the law threatened irreparable harm by undermining their reputation and goodwill while keeping unsafe drivers, including those accused of sexual misconduct, on the road.

Lyft called the law “hazardous” and Uber called it “reckless.” The law would take effect on July 28, after the City Council in January overwhelmingly overrode former Mayor Eric Adams’ veto.

A spokesman for New York City’s law department said on Thursday it is reviewing both cases.

Uber and Lyft, both based ‌in San Francisco, have faced criticism that they don’t do enough to stop drivers who abuse passengers or commit fraud.

As of June 1, Uber faced 3,571 lawsuits and Lyft faced 54 lawsuits in nationwide litigation in San Francisco federal court accusing drivers of sexual misconduct.

In challenging the New York City law, Lyft and Uber objected to requirements that they give drivers 14 days’ notice before letting them go, and potentially rehire drivers deactivated since 2019 solely because they did not receive such notice.

They also objected on privacy grounds to requiring passengers to detail alleged misconduct to accused drivers, and objected to a heightened burden of proof when defending against drivers who challenge their deactivations in court or arbitration.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Member Shekar Krishnan, the law’s main sponsor, said they looked forward to the law being upheld in court, and that the council will “fight to ensure all app-based drivers have basic due process protections.”

Wholesale prices see biggest spike since 2022 as energy costs climb

    June 11, 2026 10:45 AM EDT / CBS News

    By

Inflation facing U.S. businesses surged in May to its highest level since November 2022 amid higher energy prices stemming from the Iran war.

The Producer Price Index, which registers inflation before it reaches consumers, soared 6.5% in May from a year ago, the Labor Department reported on Thursday. On a monthly basis, the PPI rose 1.1% from April, a faster pace than the 0.6% increase forecast by economists polled by financial data firm FactSet.

The hotter-than-expected reading comes a day after the Consumer Price Index surged in May to an annual rate of 4.2%, its fastest pace in more than three years. Although the PPI doesn’t directly signal changes in consumer prices, it can feed into broader inflation if businesses pass those costs on to customers.

The data underscores the stark shift in the nation’s inflation outlook this year, with gasoline prices remaining sharply elevated. Resurgent inflation is also likely to keep the Federal Reserve on the sidelines, with some Wall Street economists speculating that policy makers are more likely to hike interest rates than to cut them.

The Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates steady at its next meeting, scheduled for June 16-17, as officials monitor the latest inflation data.

“When determining the direction of monetary policy, the Fed looks to today’s wholesale inflation figures as one piece in the larger puzzle,” said Elizabeth Renter, senior economist at NerdWallet, in an email. “The likelihood of a rate hike in the coming months has increased with this week’s consumer and wholesale inflation data, but the Fed will most likely wait another month before taking that step.”

Wholesale gasoline prices surged by more than 23% from April to May, and by nearly 70% from the year-ago period, the PPI data showed. Gas prices have edged down in June, though the latest PPI report doesn’t reflect this because it captures data from the prior month.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core wholesale prices rose 0.4% in May from the previous month and 4.9% from May 2025.

Wholesale prices can offer an early look at where consumer inflation might be headed. Economists also watch it because some of its components, notably health care and financial services, flow into the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge — the Personal Consumption Expenditures, or PCE, index.

“With both the May CPI and PPI data in hand, our PCE tracking nowcast points to a 0.5% rise in headline prices, and a 0.3% rise in core prices in May,” Oxford Economics U.S. economist Grace Zwemmer said in a research note. “This would still push headline PCE up to 4.2%, its hottest reading since April 2023.”
