NASA

SpaceX

NASA

Replacement crew docks at International Space Station, boosts numbers back to 7

    2026-02-14T18:53:00-0500 / CBS News

A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule with a crew of four glided in for a Valentine’s Day docking at the International Space Station Saturday, boosting the lab’s crew back to a full complement of seven one month after four other fliers came home early because of a medical issue.

The Crew Dragon docked at the space-facing port of the lab’s forward Harmony module at 3:15 p.m. Eastern Time, 34 hours after launch Friday from the Kennedy Space Center atop a Falcon 9 rocket.

The Crew 12 fliers cavort aboard the International Space Station shortly after floating inside on Feb. 14, 2026. They joined station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, back left in black shirt, NASA astronaut Chis Williams and cosmonaut Sergey Mikaev, both wearing black shirts. The Crew 12 astronauts, from left to right, are cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev (upside down), Jack Hathaway, Jessica Meir and French astronaut Sophie Adenot at the far right. NASA

“Grateful to be on board, and we’re ready to get to work,” radioed Crew 12 commander Jessica Meir, making her second long-duration stay aboard the space station.

Joined by veteran Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev and two space rookies, astronaut Jack Hathaway and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, the Crew 12 fliers opened the Crew Dragon’s hatch and floated into the station two hours after docking.

Amid hugs and handshakes, they were welcomed aboard by space station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergey Mikaev and NASA astronaut Chris Williams. Those three were launched to the outpost last November aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

“Welcome to Crew 12,” Kud-Sverchkov said in a brief ceremony. “We are happy they all arrived safe and sound, we’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time. We’re really happy and proud to work as a team here.”

Meir replied, “It is so wonderful to be back up here…You look around, the crew up here, and it’s really a testament to everything we do, we have so many countries represented, so many backgrounds, so many disciplines, we are so excited to be here.”

A camera inside the Crew Dragon capsule looks over the shoulders of commander Jessica Meir, left, and Jack Hathaway as they monitor cockpit displays during final approach to the International Space Station. Feb. 14, 2026. SpaceX

As for the trip up, Adenot, a veteran French air force helicopter test pilot, sky diver and SCUBA expert, said SpaceX gave the crew “quite a ride, very fun!”

“The first time we looked at the Earth was, wow, mind blowing,” Adenot said. “The Earth is so beautiful from up (here). We see no lines, no borders, it was a very big moment for us, for Jack and me, to see that for the first time.”

Meir and her crewmates are replacing Crew 11 commander Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, whose early departure last month left the station with just three occupants: Kud-Sverchkov, Mikaev and Williams.

While the outpost can be safely operated by a crew of three, a single NASA astronaut cannot carry out a full range of NASA and partner agency research as well as required maintenance.

In addition, spacewalks, which require two astronauts using a buddy system, are ruled out.

The Crew Dragon closes in on the International Space Station after a smooth rendezvous, bringing four fresh crew members to the outpost. Feb. 14, 2026. NASA

NASA managers attempted to move up Crew 12’s launch by about four days to as early as Feb. 11 to shave off some of the time Williams would be the sole operator of systems in the U.S. segment of the space station.

But because of conflicts with work to ready NASA’s Artemis II moon mission for launch, along with high winds earlier this week along the Crew Dragon’s ascent trajectory, Meir and company ended up launching Friday.

With the addition of Crew 12, research in the U.S. segment can resume its normal pace and spacewalks can be staged as needed.

“Crew 12 is honored to join our Expedition 74 friends and colleagues…to add our chapter to the story of the International Space Station,” Hathaway radioed.

The rendezvous went off without a hitch. But earlier in the day, the crew held a private medical conference, or PMC, and said they might need a follow-on PMC after docking. They later confirmed they wanted a post-docking medical conference.

“We’re going to go forward with that plan, so if you could just have the (flight) surgeon ready for us after we get all docked we would appreciate that,” Hathaway radioed. Mission control replied: “We’ll be ready to support.”

Under strictly enforced medical privacy guidelines, NASA does not discuss astronaut health issues, and it wasn’t known what sort of issue might have prompted the request for a post-docking PMC.

About half the men and women who fly in space suffer nausea and related symptoms during their initial adaptation to weightlessness, but the discomfort typically abates after a few days in space.

Breezy Johnson on her Olympic love story and sharing the gold medal win with loved ones

    February 14, 2026 / 4:46 PM EST / CBS News

U.S. downhill skier Breezy Johnson is ending her run at the 2026 Winter Olympics with a gold medal, a fiancé and a message from Taylor Swift.

In an interview with CBS News, Johnson says the life of a professional athlete can sometimes be at odds with her personal life, but at Milano Cortina, the two paths became one after her boyfriend Connor Watkins got down on one knee at the finish line of her final race.

“I had just always had this like thing in the back of my head that was like ‘it’d be fun to get engaged at the Olympics,’” Johnson said.

    An Olympic love story

Watkins recalled Johnson giving him a subtle hint in 2024, in which she reminded him that if he’s serious about their relationship — the Olympics are two years away. While the two knew they were on the same page, the proposal this week still came as a surprise to Johnson.

The 30-year-old picked up her first Olympic gold in the women’s downhill event last week, but she crashed out of contention in the women’s Super-G on Thursday. She wasn’t expecting much when Watkins asked her to meet by the finish line.

“I was like ‘Man, everybody’s gonna leave. I’m gonna be here all alone’…And then he got down on one knee and I was like, ‘Oh,’” Johnson said. “He just…his words, and I just started crying.”

When asked about what he said to Johnson, Watkins recited: “Breezy Noble Johnson, you worked so hard and achieved so much, yet you still find the time to make me feel special. Make me feel love. And most importantly, take the time to help me love myself. And now that i know what that feels like, I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side.”

    A congratulations from Taylor Swift

Watkins, a self-acknowledged planner, said he had the ring since August, telling CBS News he worked with a jeweler with a guidance from a friend to create the sapphire and white sapphire engagement ring with a white gold band.

He also had a wooden jewelry box made, engraved with “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” — lyrics from a Taylor Swift song, “The Alchemy,” in which the singer appears to reference her fiancé Travis Kelce.

“That song really resonated with me,” Johnson said. “There’s really no better feeling than not the winning, but the getting to share that winning with the people that you love.”

When Swift congratulated her on Instagram, Johnson said, “I just lost it.”

“Mikaela Shiffrin was there,” Johnson recalled the moment she and her Team USA colleague, the most decorated alpine skier ever, saw Swift’s comment on the engagement. “And I could tell Shiffrin was like ‘I’ve never been so jealous of Breezy in my life.’”

Breezy Johnson’s Valentine’s Day and wedding plan

The couple says they were keeping Valentine’s Day pretty “low key,” but they had plans to watch their good friend Avital Carroll compete in women’s dual moguls.

Carroll, an American-born skier who now competes for Austria, helped Watkins designed the engagement ring.

When asked about the wedding planning, Watkins said there’s still a lot of decisions to be made.

“We’ve got to figure out if we want a big or a small wedding,” he said. “We’ve talked about a ski wedding. We’ve talked a destination…We gotta figure out what we want.”

Lindsey Vonn says “ride was worth the fall” after fourth surgery for broken leg, set to return to U.S.

    February 14, 2026 / 5:35 PM EST / CBS News

American skier Lindsey Vonn announced Saturday that her latest surgery was successful, and that she has been cleared to return to the United States after breaking her left leg in a brutal crash last weekend during her opening downhill race at the Winter Olympics in Italy.

“Surgery went well today!” the 41-year-old Vonn wrote on social media. This marks her fourth surgery since the Feb. 8 crash.

Vonn had said Friday she would need at least two more surgeries— the one Saturday and a second after she returns to the U.S.

On Wednesday, Vonn disclosed she had already undergone three surgeries since experiencing the injury. She wrote Saturday that once she’s back in the U.S., she plans on giving “more updates and info about my injury.”

The Olympic veteran from Colorado also reflected on her crash, saying, “I don’t have regrets.”

“The ride was worth the fall. When I close my eyes at night I don’t have regrets and the love I have for skiing remains,” Vonn said in her post. “I am still looking forward to the moment when I can stand on the top of the mountain once more. And I will.”

Vonn crashed just seconds into the first run of her Olympic downhill race. She was competing despite rupturing her left ACL in a different crash during a World Cup race in the Swiss Alps last month.

“I was willing to risk and push and sacrifice for something I knew I was absolutely capable of doing,” Vonn said in the post. “I will always take the risk of crashing while giving it my all, rather than not ski to my potential and have regret.”

The three-time Olympic medalist had come out of retirement to compete in the Milan Cortina Games. After tearing her ACL, she had said she felt confident she could still race with the help of a knee brace.

“Please, don’t be sad,” Vonn said. “Empathy, love and support I welcome with an open heart, but please not sadness or sympathy. I hope instead it gives you strength to keep fighting, because that is what I am doing and that is what I will continue to do. Always.”

Obama compares ICE’s ‘rogue behavior’ in Minnesota to dictatorships

Former President Barack Obama criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents’ conduct in Minnesota as dangerous, saying “the rogue behavior” is akin to what “we’ve seen in authoritarian countries” and “in dictatorships.”

The comments, which came during a wide-ranging interview with liberal podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen out Saturday, are the latest example of the former president reneging on his long-standing strategy of minimizing his public presence to allow the next generation of Democrats to emerge. He deliberately took a back-seat role during former President Joe Biden’s term.

Obama, who has previously criticized President Donald Trump’s deployment of federal agents to US cities, called the actions of immigration enforcement agents in Minnesota “deeply concerning and dangerous.”

The sweeping immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, which saw the deployment of roughly 3,000 federal agents, has been hallmarked by numerous videos showing federal agents’ aggressive tactics and confrontations with the public.

“It is important for us to recognize the unprecedented nature of what ICE was doing in Minneapolis, St. Paul, the way that federal agents — ICE agents — were being deployed, without any clear guidelines, training, pulling people out of their homes … tear-gassing crowds simply who were standing there, not breaking any laws,” Obama said.

He added that American citizens should be commended for engaging in “peaceful protests and shining a light on the sort of behavior that, in the past, we’ve seen in authoritarian countries and we’ve seen in dictatorships, but we have not seen in America.”

The killings of protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January at the hands of immigration enforcement agents in Minneapolis prompted outrage in the city and across the nation. The Trump administration this week announced it is ending its monthslong immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota.

Obama, who wrote a column in January saying Pretti’s death should be “a wake-up call” that America’s core values are “under assault,” praised the response of protesters in Minnesota.

Protesters have largely adopted a strategy of civil disobedience in Minnesota, which has included alerting their communities of the presence of immigration agents using whistles, car horns and shouting, and recording encounters with agents.

“That kind of heroic, sustained behavior in subzero weather by ordinary people is what should give us hope,” Obama said in the latest interview.

    Obama slams political ‘clown show’

The interview was Obama’s first since Trump’s social media account earlier this month posted and then deleted a racist video depicting the former president and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes in a jungle. Cohen, while mentioning the video, asked Obama how America can reverse the decline of civil discourse.

Though Obama didn’t directly address Trump’s post, he said, “There’s this sort of clown show that’s happening in social media and on television,” adding that people “who used to feel like you had to have some sort of decorum and a sense of propriety and respect” appear to not be showing “any shame about this.”

Trump has refused to apologize for the video, blaming a staffer for the mistake and insisting he hadn’t seen the final frames of the video which contained the offensive content.

“I think it’s important to recognize that the majority of the American people find this behavior deeply troubling,” Obama said. “It is true that it gets attention. It’s true that it’s a distraction.”

He argued that America can restore “norms, rule of law (and) decency” by saying “enough,” something he said he’s now “seeing across the board.”
